Jess says: I don't read much of AU fanfiction as I prefer AH, so for me to read an AU, let alone love it, it has to be something special. Afterlife is indeed something special. The story is set in a post-Eclipse world and the story begins two years after Edward and Bella's wedding. Bella has been through her transformation and her period as a newborn.
The author, thatisastory, writes a compelling AU grounded in canon, while straying from the usual pairings. The main romance in Afterlife is Jasper/Bella, but still works with canon principles. We are taken on an emotional journey that has experiencing what it would have been like for Bella had her forever with Edward had not been so permanent...
Edward and Alice have both died in a fight with the Volturi, but this is not like most non-canon pairing fics they are treated with the utmost respect and as Bella mourns for them and you feel her pain. I found myself hugging my sides and having tears fall down my cheeks you can seriously feel every emotion she went through. It is so emotionally charged I could not read it all at once I had to take it chapter by chapter.
Bella is living a shell of her life it’s almost as if she died when he died, Jasper on the other hand goes back to Texas and begins to feed off humans. Without giving too much of the story away it is a story about self discovery and moving on with your life after such an awful tragedy. You will not regret reading this, even if you don’t like the idea of Jasper/Bella the way it’s written you will find you self believing that this is possible.
