Kassiah says: Though I have seen Shalu exalted on the UU discussion board, I have never read anything that she has written. Everyone who knows me certainly would not expect for me to want to read a Jalice story. So it is fucking awesome for me that this story won 2nd place in the For the Love of Jasper contest, because I might never have read it otherwise. And I would be seriously missing out.
Shalu is an amazing writer; her words are beautiful and are almost poetic. The tale that she weaves in You Know What You Are is one unlike anything that I have ever experienced.
Jasper is a vampire who lived with the Cullens for years before finally surrendering to the fact that he just wasn't fit to live with them.
I was a tired shell and needed a better level of existence. This “vegetarian” lifestyle, as they jokingly referred to it, required a level of control I did not have, although I tried. After being dismissed by Carlilse, he finds himself in The Cellar, where humans willingly offer themselves as "pets, 'donors,' playthings." Alice approaches him and offers herself to him, blood and body, to which he refuses, saying she is not ready and does not understand what she's doing.
I don't want to give too much of the story away, but I do want to share this with you:
The challenge continued, her petite frame stomping back to me. Amusement curled my expression until her lips provoked me.Her eloquent descriptions and engaging narrative make Shalu one of my new favorite authors. I really appreciate her attention to detail, and the mere mention of Edward set my heart aflutter. The relationship between Jasper and Alice, although completely unconventional, isn't rushed and doesn't leave us with a feeling of it being forced.
Straddling me, kissing me. I remained still, like a monument. Soft, fleshy lips pushed against mine, cold, unmoving. A hot slip of tongue licked. Heated fingers gripped at my hair. I withdrew further inside.
If I opened my mouth, I would taste her.
If I inhaled her scent, I would undoubtedly be overcome with want for her.
I would take her.
I would lose myself again.
“Take. Me.” Hands clinging to my neck, I opened my eyes. She was desperate, that was certain. She reeked of it. Her face reddened as tears pooled in her eyes.
I felt rage boil and bubble in my chest. I opened my mouth to respond, and her vitality danced on my tastebuds. I had to swallow again before I spoke. Or rather, snarled.
“Take. You?” Her eyes went wide at the menace in my tone. The lights felt like they dimmed, perhaps to better allow my fiery temper to radiate through the dark.
It was quiet. Almost a whisper, but my threat would be heard, even if she’d gone deaf. “You want me to feed from you, yes?”
A crisp nod. I gripped her arms, sure to leave bruises.
“You’ve never offered yourself before, have you?”
Terse shake, side to side. No.
“So how do you think I would do that? Answer,” I demanded.
With a stellarly-written, captivating storyline, it's easy for me to see why this story was chosen as a winner. I highly recommend that everyone read it, even if you are straight-up Team E like I am. Trust me, this is a story that should not be missed.
