Who didn’t swoon just a little when, in Breaking Dawn, Edward cooked for Bella?
What’s not hawt about a man who can cook, like really cook?  Then make that man Edward Cullen? Yeah, you know you want feast on that.

Let me tell you about a couple Chefward fics that have pwned me and now is one of favorite versions of Edward.

My love of Chefward started when I began reading The Diner by Jessypt.  I was rec’d The Diner by one of my Twitter pals, jjuliebee.

What a great story, but ladies it’s a little hard on the heart.  We first meet Bella who is coming home to live with her father after a long absence.  This Bella is trying to start over after her abusive marriage to James.

Bella loves to bake, so she starts baking for her dad and his deputies.  After about a month, Charlie talks her into getting a job.  There is an opening at the local diner.

Cue mouthwatering hottie Chefward.  Edward is the cook at the diner ,but he is going to culinary school in Port Angeles.  Chefward had almost completed school when he was in Chicago but was called back due to the death of his mother, Esme.

These two have some definite trials ahead of them as they fall in love and try to conquer their difficult pasts.

There are some steamy times.  Here is a peek from Chapter 16:

He unlocked and opened the door, and the minute it closed I found myself pressed up against the back of it, his hands and lips all over me. I couldn’t help the moans and whimpers that fell from my lips, completely lost in the heat of the moment. Clothes were pulled off, strewn around the room as we moved toward the bed. His hands roamed all over me, and I shuddered at the sensation of his teeth, his lips, his tongue on my neck, my breasts, my hips. Hovering above me, he stared into my eyes, his hunger, need, and love palpable. I cried out, my body screaming in ecstasy when he pushed into me. I had never felt anything so amazing and perfect as our bodies rocked together, in and out, as we came together, both finding our release, me crying out his name, him frozen with eyes closed and lips parted.

There is plenty of heartache as well.  Here is a peek from Chapter 19:

He turned and walked to the back of the kitchen before turning to face me. “This,” he said harshly gesturing between us, “is over.”

I could feel my panic rising, the anxiety threatening to pull me down.

“But…you can’t do this, Edward” I whispered in the deathly quiet kitchen.

“Just go! Get the fuck out of my kitchen! We’re done! Done!” He roared.

Gasp.  Now you must go read it to find out how Chefward and Bakerella turn out .

Another Chefward that pwned me is The Workshop by danieller123.  When I put a call out for Chefward stories, Mana_Liz sent me the link.  This can only be found on its own blog.
This fic will melt your heart away.  Not only do we have Chefward, we have Single DILFChefward.  UNF!!!

Young Edward applies for the Sous Chef job at Bella’s newest restaurant in Miami.  Emmett, his brother, works as the General Manager.

In this fic, Chefward has to fight to keep his daughter while learning how to be Executive Chef and fall in love with Chefella.  Let’s throw another baby in the mix and see what happens.
This fic was equal parts funny, HAWT, and heartwrenching.  Here is a snippet I would like to share with you:

“Shh.” I whispered into Bella’s ear and planted a kiss into her sweet neck.

“Go back to bed Ness.” I said softly over my shoulder, keeping my place inside of Bella’s warm body.

“But Daddy.”

“I said go-to-sleep Renesmee.” My voice was stern in hopes that she would listen to me.

I waited to hear her feet retreat, but no sound came.

Fuck.

My wood instantly went down for the count. There was no way I could have sex with Bella while my four-year-old was on the opposite side of the door.

This one is definitely worth the read.

The last Chefward Fic I want to tell you to go read is a O/S by MsKathy called Just Be.

MsK wrote this for, Fandom Gives Back New Moon addition winner, FloridaChickie.  I have to tell you, MsK is in my top three fic authors, and she did not fail to deliver.

Arch rivals IronChefward and Chefella compete on IronChef America and the secret ingredient is Lemons.  Now I won’t give away who won, but there is a lot more to this story when IronChefward is invited to Chefella’s for a mock Iron Chef party.

Here is a little tidbit to tide you over:

“I love juicy, ripe peaches. Sometimes the fuzz can feel a little odd on my tongue, but then I get into the slick, slippery flesh and it’s divine.”

Gah.  Just Gah.

There are other Chefward stories out there.  I was rec’d but have not fully read A Constant in the Darkness.  This is about a high school aged Edward who loves to cook and Bella who has an eating disorder.  It’s a good fic so far.  You should check it out too.

Thanks for spending a little time with Chefward and myself.

Bon Appétit

Let me start by saying one thing:  Everything you know about fanfiction is wrong.

Probably.

The problem is, unless you’ve been involved with other fanfiction fandoms before stumbling into ours, there’s a lot you probably don’t know regarding classifications of fic and the genres we read and write.  The Twilight fandom is a unique animal, one that has sort of fucked up a lot of people’s perceptions of fanfic.  Thus why so many other fandoms and online communities hate us.

You know what, though?  We’re having fun, so let’s ignore them and keep rolling.  There will be politics and varying opinions wherever you go, and by this stage in the Twific game, it’s really too late to change much.  Regardless, we can still be educated, so before I dive in and tell you about the specific kind of Alternate Universe stories I love, I’ll give a quick lesson on fanfic terminology.  I’d like to thank gkkstitch for her help with this (she’s been around many fandoms for many years), as well as Smellyia and giselle-lx for their fabu articles on The Lazy, Yet Discerning Ficster, which I will link below.

This is how gkkstitch explained it to me:

Anything that takes the characters you know and puts them in any situation outside canon is AU.

Alternate Universe covers a large gambit of story types, but in the Twilight fandom alone, the fans have coined the term AH to signify not only AU but also Human in nature.  The right way to refer to it would be AUH.

She also pointed out that stories we think of as Alt-New Moon (which we see a lot of), or really Alternates to any of the books in the series, are considered break-away canon.  They are AU that begin with a canon background, then diverge to tell a different story/choice/outcome.

In a fantastic set of articles on TLYDF, giselle-lx breaks down the differences between canon stories and AU, so if you’re interested in that, check out Part 1 and Part 2 of Canon Fodder: The What, Who, Why and How of Canon Twific.

You may also enjoy Smellyia’s take on canon vs. non-canon.

We sure like to make things complicated, don’t we?  But hey, at least we get a wide variety of stories out of it, and I can’t say I’ve ever been bored with the selection in this fandom!

Now, onto the actual reason I’m here to share!  The kind of AU I really love is something I refer to as AU-AU in my head.  Don’t quote me on that because I totally made it up.  It’s just my way of differentiating between the many forms of AU stories out there.  To me, these are one-shots, novellas, and multi-chapters that take the Twilight characters and place them in a completely unique world that the fanfic author has created.  There is no influence from the original meeting in the books, and sometimes, vampire rules and abilities of the characters Stephenie Meyer created may be manipulated.  The vampires and humans may be mixed up, but the canon pairings will either be in place or eventually come together.

Complicated explanation, right?  But that is the kind of AU I really enjoy.

The most popular and well-known examples of this I can think of would be Creature of Habit by EZRocksAngel and Bonne Foi by Amethyst Jackson.

Okay, now you see what I mean, don’t you?

So why is it that I love these kinds of stories?  Well, plain and simple, we each got into this fandom for different reasons, but it all started with a book.  Then another and another and another, and suddenly, we found ourselves wanting more.  The human stories are fun and provide a wealth of possibilities, but AU stories like these open the door to a whole different world.  Depending on the mind of the author, that world could be boundless.  Sometimes, you still want to read about vampires, but we’re comfortable with the names and faces we’ve grown to love so much.

AU stories of this nature can be a creative treasure trove, and I have read many that have truly blown my mind.  As a writer and an avid reader, I’m always enthralled by the ideas that other authors come up with, both in their plots and characters.  I love seeing how details and subplots are tied together and all the roles of the different players in a story making it a complete adventure.  I’m delighted by the ways other people’s minds work, and constantly impressed by the things they come up with that I never in a million years would have considered.

At the heart of these AU stories, we still get to see the familiar, much-loved pairings together.  There is usually a love story involved somewhere.  Sometimes it’s angsty.  Sometimes Edward gets to be dark.  Sometimes Bella gets to be the vampire first.  Sometimes, an author takes you on a roller coaster ride that is a complete and utter mindfuck, but you still find yourself salivating over every update (and often resisting the urge to beg for more).

The fact of the matter is, there are far more of these stories than I could discuss or list here, so I’m going to give you a few that I think a great, and I invite you to leave a comment below and share some of yours with me…and everyone else  ;)  Or, hey, go ahead and tweet & email them to me.  I won’t mind.

Don’t Judge a Fic By Its Genre

Confession time: I’ve been reading RPF (Real Person Fic) for almost as long as I’ve been reading fanfiction. I started reading FF in the 90s, but initially stuck to canon in fandoms like The X-Files and the Whedonverse. I loved the idea of filling in the gaps and fade-to-blacks. I didn’t much care for the stories that were All-Human or Non-Canon – I considered them to be pointless fluff. I didn’t understand the appeal of a human Angel who didn’t fight demons but ran a bookstore in San Francisco.

Then one day, I stumbled upon something called RPF. I sheepishly asked around a few online communities; what did RPF stand for? What was this about? Why were the characters named David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson instead of Mulder and Scully? I felt kind of like a dumbass for not getting the lingo. Then, once I was told… Gasp! I was scandalized!

This RPF stuff is crazy! I thought. Yet I was intrigued, so I dipped my toe into the ocean where David Boreanaz and James Marsters were getting it on between takes in their trailer. Wow! I didn’t even know David Boreanaz liked boys. Apparently, he was also sleeping with Charisma Carpenter, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Eliza Dushku (mmm… Eliza – AHEM!) I was astonished.

No, I kid. I understood these weren’t factual accounts of these celebrities’ lives, cheating on their spouses with their cast mates and keeping their true sexual identities a secret. It was fiction. And the stories I read were very well-written and well-executed fiction, indeed.

A fellow Buffy fic fan once asked, “Don’t you feel creepy about reading stories about real people like that?” I thought about it. My answer was no, because I wasn’t considering these fictional stories we passed around the internet as real tellings of these peoples’ lives. I was just reading really good fiction with recognizable names.

That said, I certainly understand that RPF is not everyone’s bag. Some people deem RPF to be an invasion of the celebrity in question’s privacy, much like the paparazzi prying their way into an intimate dinner with that celebrity’s significant other.

Other people consider RPF such as [Insert Celebrity Name Here] and Other as a “self insert”, which, to some, like RPF reader/writer littlesecret84, seems biased. I asked her to tell me what she liked about RPF.

“I just like to read pretty things. I used to be very biased against it, thinking it was all disgusting. Like these are real people, etc. But then I realized that a lot of Twific is actually thinly veiled RPF. Most authors are writing about Robert Pattinson, but calling him Edward, and they’re writing themselves as Bella, which is totally fine, but then what’s so wrong about calling Rob “Rob”?

Good question, Ser. Why does a Real Person Fic offend people when Robward doesn’t? For example, some Twific writers put their Edward in a Stoli t-shirt and Doc Martens. (Guilty!) Others write their Edward as an actor carrying on with his co-star and being hounded by the press.

As SinAnd Shame, author of The Anonymous Series says, “Call a spade a spade, what’s wrong with that?”

Well said, Sin!

Now, I would never assume to know the answer to the above posed question, but I would like to ask you all to explore the idea of not judging a book by its cover. Or rather, not judging a fic (and its author) by its genre.

There are well-written stories and non-well-written stories in all genres. All in all, there seems to be a real dichotomy; on the one hand, we as readers are willing to fantasize about Rob when his name is Edward, no matter where he lives or what he does, but we’re squicked when his name is Robert Pattinson.

Some folks say that RPF may even be venturing beyond squick, beyond invasion of privacy, and crossing a line into “illegal territory” like libel. I spoke with SinAndShame, who happens to be a lawyer, about this very issue.

“RPF is LESS likely to be against the law than true canon fanfiction is… Canon fanfiction is borderline copyright infringement – there is a big gray area… the question becomes, are they actually benefiting financially from someone else’s work?

With RPF – unless you are holding out what you’re writing to be the truth (a simple disclaimer takes care of that) – there is no way you can be accused of libel. If Rob Pattinson had his lawyer send me an e-mail that said “Mr. Pattinson would appreciate if you would remove your writing about him and cease any further stories with his name” – I would do it.  Out of respect, not out of obligation.”

When I asked Sin what she liked about RPF, she had this to say:

“I like to root for the underdog – and RPF is still considered subversive, so I like it even more, lol.

Maybe it’s a little easier from a creative standpoint to write about. You’re less constricted by the world the writers have created so there is a lot more freedom – even in AU/AH there are people who feel that too OOC is unacceptable.  It’s fiction.  We’re just writing what we want to write and putting recognizable names in there…

I think RPF writers, unless you are blatantly putting something out there that is self insert – are uber conscious about avoiding that – and instead they try to create rich, sincere characters that they can weave into their stories.

We take bits of Rob we know and we extrapolate them into something we want to write about.  Since we honestly don’t know him, or much about him – we’re just creating another character – and using his popularity to get people to read our stories.  It’s a marketing ploy.  Two years from now, it’ll be someone else’s name we’re using but it won’t change the fact that we’re all writing fiction and hoping someone else enjoys it.”

Yes, using bits and pieces of said celebrity is very handy as a marketing ploy, but the knowledge that we as fans of the celebrity may carry with us may also lend to a certain story line just itching to get out.

I found my dear friend, KrisBCullen one day when I was, wait for it, searching for RPF. That’s right, I was searching for it because I wanted something original to read, not Twific, and I am sick of staring at “Atonement” on my bookshelf knowing that I’ll never fucking finish it.

So I searched and scrolled and filtered and scrolled and there it was – a smart and funny summary to a story that’s continued to leave me in stitches as well as snot sobbing into my Kleenex.

The other night, KBC and I were chillin’ and sippin’ beer with each other across three time zones when I asked her to share her RPF writing process.

When I read, I try to give different pairings and storylines a chance. I had Loss of Control in my head before Rob was shaving. (Well, he’s pretty hairy, so maybe he had started shaving at twelve, but I digress.) I’m big on characterization, and I needed a male lead who had to relinquish control over his life in order to fit in the story. Every time I tried to lay out that particular character profile, he came across as pathetic – not sympathetic. Then this poor Rob Pattinson guy has his life explode, and I thought… hmmm…. maybe…

So for his characterization, I had some of what was in the public domain, and some stuff that just had to be guessed at, to flesh it out. But all the other characters started as a blank sheet of paper. Every character has a full bio on paper or in my head – where they went to school, their favorite colors, what they like to read, eat, watch, listen to… even if it’s not in the story, I have to know to write them.

In AU, AH, canon… you get a lot of that from the original writer as a base. You can add, modify, etc. but if you go too far off, readers aren’t happy.”

At the end of the day, whether it be Celebrity/Other or Celebrity/Celebrity, RPF has just as much of a chance to dazzle you as any other piece of fanfic. The authors of RPF are amazingly talented and passionate about the stories they have to tell. So next time you look at your copy of “Atonement” and wish it wouldn’t mock you in your negligence to finish it, give RPF a chance. I dare you.

#Trending Topic: Cheaterward

Adultery.  Cheating.  Infidelity.  Going out for burgers when you’ve already got steak at home…
Whatever you want to call it, it’s the ultimate relationship taboo, and a touchy subject for most.  Some can’t stomach it because it’s happened to them, and others just don’t even like to think about it.  Me?  I kind of have a thing for taboo, touchy topics, so I don’t have a problem with it at all, and it’s not because I’ve never been there.  I’ve been cheated on and, I’m ashamed to admit, that I’ve even been the cheater.  In either case, not that it excuses my behavior or that of the guy in question, the relationships weren’t serious.  Doesn’t matter to your self-worth or my conscience, but I digress.
As much as people dislike a cheater in real life, in the fandom Cheaterward is liked even less…unless he’s cheating on someone else with Bella.  This is, according to an informal poll I took, generally found to be much more acceptable than Edward cheating on Bella.  Okay, that’s a little fucked up, but consider the source.  Ours is a fandom that is based on the a book in which Edward was supposed to be a near-perfect man…er, vampire.
Here’s what the fandom had to say about it…

From a purely romantic, fairytale perspective, Edward cheating on Bella is NEVER acceptable to my emotional sensibilities, though if E is in a loveless marriage my heart can forgive him for cheating with his “soulmate”.  That is just twisted and wrong from a real life perspective and makes me laugh at myself for being so illogical!
-Anonymous

In Twific, because Edward is an idealized idea of men and because he is written by women, he very often gets away with a lot– except cheating.  Almost every action of Edward’s in any fanfiction story is at some point justified because he does it out of love for Bella. This is why cheating on Bella is the exception to this rule; because it is clearly not out of love for her, and this is why it is so rare to read about an Edward cheating on B.
-WhatsMyNomDePlume

I’m a canon pairings girl, so as much as I hate to say it, it often pains me to see these characters paired with anyone else. My irrational brain will justify pretty much anything to see Bella and Edward together – just about.
-Phoenixhunter47

Well obviously Edward cheating on someone else with Bella as E&B are just meant to be!!! LOL
-Anonymous

Edward is on such a tall pedestal, that most would rather see Bella cheat on him, than for him to cheat on her.  Not to mention, a lot of people just don’t think her whiny ass deserves him.

… In fic I would say that all cheating, even when E/B are cheating together is tough for me to take, but it’s not a deal breaker.  It is honestly harder for me to read E cheating on B, than the reverse, but even B doing the cheating breaks my heart.  I will really only stick with a cheating fic if it’s written with truth and remorse and change. I do not read cheating fics that are just glorified cheat/smut stories.
-RedVelvetHeaven

Now, I’m not pro-cheating in any way, shape, or form, but on two separate levels, I can’t stay seem to stay away from a well written Cheaterward fic.
From A Writers Perspective
As someone who writes, and writes a fic where there is cheating – of a sort, I find the topic to be rife with many compelling opportunities for a story.  There are so many different avenues to explore, and relationship dynamics to play with; also, you have the full spectrum of human emotions to work with, and I find the human condition to be extremely fascinating.  I think this topic necessitates that a writer really develop their characters, and the reasons behind the infidelity.  Otherwise, it can be extremely difficult – or in the case of Edward cheating on Bella, next to impossible –  for the reader to accept a reconciliation?
The problem is that there’s a decided lack of well-written fics covering about infidelity.  Most of them that I’ve found are fairly awful, and make it seem as if the writers lack even the smallest understanding of the far-reaching consequences, and devastating aftereffects cheating causes.  The few well-written fics out there, the ones that look honestly at infidelity, tend to be Bella cheating on Edward, or B/E cheating on others with one another.  Of those fics, I can only think of one fic that handled the topic realistically, yet with aplomb and grace, and that would absolutely have to be a fic called Comeuppance.
I was curious as to why a writer would choose to write a fic on this topic, knowing how well they are usually received, so I asked the writer, goldenmeadow, why she wrote Comeuppance.

When I got the idea for C/U, I had little snippets of dialogue and sexy passages that I knew I wanted to use, and these were between Bella and Jacob.  I’d just started writing fanfic, beginning with canon, and wanted to branch out into something different; believe it or not, I originally intended C/U to be a comedy (WTF? Yeah, I know).   Obviously it didn’t turn out that way, although I think there are some humorous moments within it.

What did you hope to achieve with it?
The best possible result in writing C/U has been the reader’s reactions, chapter by chapter.  To read the change in reviews from hating the main character, to feeling a certain complicity with her, to wanting to console Edward, to disapproving of his actions, to want them both to forgive each other, and then at the end recognizing that human love is a frail thing.  But even when destroyed, it can be put back together.  Not quite the way it was before, but perhaps more meaningfully, more realistically.

It was important for me to paint these characters as not quite perfect.  Because who among us is?  But also to allow the reader enough leniency to forgive Edward and Bella for their equal injustices and injuries…just as the two eventually forgave each other.  I suppose I wanted to take Edward and Bella’s epic, ‘high up on a pedestal’ love and bring it right down to the basest human level, but still make them our recognizable Edward and Bella (does that make sense or do I just sound like a pontificating asshole?).

I had a lot of reactions in which readers said they could now understand why one might cheat, and that it truly isn’t a black and white issue at heart.  I also had many people tell me they felt so much throughout it–that’s the most fuckin’ fantastic thing!

From a Reader’s Perspective
As a fanfic reader, Cheaterward fics appeal to me for a variety of reasons.  The biggest reason, is the same one behind why most of us read in the first place.  It’s a form of escapism, and allows you to experience things you otherwise wouldn’t have.  I won’t lie and say that I’ve never thought about cheating before.
I’m twenty-seven years old, and crazy about my boyfriend of nine and a half years, but I sometimes find myself thinking, ‘I’m never going to have sex with anyone other than him again.  I’m never going to feel the anticipation or thrill of exploring and being explored by someone new.  I’m never going to date again.  I’ll never again be surrounded by an air of mystery.  No one is going to try to unravel my secrets, because he knows them all.’
Then I usually panic, and start reciting the lyrics to Pink Floyd’s Time…and then one day you find ten years have got behind you, no one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun…wondering if that’s going to be me in ten or fifteen or even twenty years.

Reading about it lets cheating vicariously experience all of the positives – the excitement of being with someone new, committing such a forbidden act, the thrill of getting caught – and no one gets hurt.  If the story is more than just a gratuitously smutty story, you also get a reminder of what can happen when you cheat.
Which brings us to my next point of enticement: masochistic voyeurism.  I find adultery equally disgusting and intriguing, and the moment that the cheater is finally caught to be horrifying, yet mesmerizing.  You know it’s coming, and you’ve come to care about the characters, so you know it’s going to be painful.  Your stomach clenches, your respiratory rate increases, your heart starts pounding in your chest, but you just can’t seem to look away from the train wreck about to take place, and then it happens and you’re gutted.
One of the most jaw-dropping, stomach-clenching, heart-wrenching, can’t-look-away moments I’ve read in fic occurred in a slightly controversial fic called Caravaggio by MeiMei42.  The scene in which the moment of infidelity happened caused quite a stir, some people even publicly flouncing because of it, but I happen to have loved it.  Most people seemed to feel that it was unexpected, but I saw it coming from the start.  I just never imagined that it would happen in the spectacular fashion it did.

As we approached the bathrooms, I could hear noises coming from the men’s room, noises that were clearly the sounds of two people getting it on. I stopped in my tracks, and I could see Alice wore a petrified look. I moved towards the men’s room.
“Bella, don’t,” she pleaded.
I shoved the door open and stepped inside. There, across the bathroom, was Heidi shoved up against the wall, and Edward with his pants around his ankles, pushing into her at an angry and determined speed. Heidi’s eyes opened when the door did and, for a second, our eyes met. She smiled and I felt bile rise up in my throat. A hand grabbed my arm, yanking me out of the bathroom, and I stumbled back, stunned and dazed for a moment.
“Bella…” Alice whispered.

“Take me home,” I said, barely able to find my voice.

Ouch!  I mean…just ouch!
In this specific instance, I don’t agree that it was cheating per se, because Edward had – on numerous occasions – made it very clear that they weren’t in a relationship.  That doesn’t mean Bella was hurt any less, and the manner in which he did it – while they were out together, essentially on a date – was still so cruel that…I don’t even have words for how badly that would hurt.  The first time I read it, my jaw hit the floor and thinking to myself, ‘That was brutal and devastating,  The way in which it was executed – in a straight forward, non-superfluous manner, was really kind of perfect.’  I’m aware most of you won’t agree with me on that point, and that’s cool.
Infidelity will always be a divisive topic.  There will always be people who choose to badmouth a story – regardless of the quality – or flounce a fic simply because someone at some point is unfaithful, and no one is ever going to change that fact.
At  their worst, Cheaterward fics are ridiculous pieces full of drivel and bad lemons that read as if they were written by tweens with no understanding of relationships, and no concept of what they are even writing about.  Somewhere in between, they are usually a little from column A, and a little from column B, almost always an excuse for writing smut while pretending that it’s more than just porn with plot and, at times, they even have the potential to be entertaining.
Hate them or love them, at their best, Cheaterward fics aren’t really about cheating.  They’re about something bigger than that.

They’re about betrayal or survival or healing or consequences or loss.  They can teach you about love and forgiveness, they can reveal reserves of strength you didn’t even know you had, or show you the depths of regret  They can be stories about true love, and teach you who you really are.
When they are amazing though, they can tear you down, and build you back up, all at once, and leave you better off for having experienced it.
