What We're Reading

Katinki: So this has been a good fic week for me. First off, two authors I really like reading started new fics, and both of them are AUs :D Spanglemaker posted the first chapter of Dog Star. This is her first go at AU, so I’m excited to see what she does with it. And duskwatcher2153, an excellent AU writer, posted the first chapter of Journal of a Young Vampire. The voice in it is superb.

On the AH front (because I do read those, too! ;D), I started a story by Hibbleton78, called Home Ice Advantage. It’s a Hockeyward, and thus far, it’s rather fun. And importantly, the author knows something about the sport, so it works well. Oh, and I joined what feels like the rest of the fandom and read all the available chapters of My Wounded Soldier, by counselor. I’ll be upfront in saying that I don’t read a lot of historical or western-ish fic… just not my cuppa (except Rochelle’s historical fic, Volition, which I consumed like delicious chocolate cake). The plot in this one is okay… still not my cuppa, but the voice of it – the cadence, the phrasing, the rhythm, the believability of it – is really very good, enough that I can look past my normal genre preferences. Really, that’s what makes this fic – the voice. Not gonna lie, though, I soooo hear James Brolin from True Grit when I read, lol.

MJinAspen: OMGGG, Kate, I’m so excited for Dog Star! I haven’t had the chance to see ch. 2, yet, though, but I can’t wait. :)

Kassiah: I am totally in love with counselor. I agree with what you’re saying, Kate, about the voice in My Wounded Soldier. I am so impressed with her! Last week, I read her story, Turkey Baster, and it was unlike anything I was expecting. I’m so hooked on her–I started reading Catwoman and I’m loving that too!

Excited to check out Home Ice Advantage. I really liked her story, Empires of the Mind.

Songster: Still can’t get with the My Wounded Soldier program but am very interested in the Turkey Baster one. What I am reading and completely loving is High Fidelity by IReenH. We had two updates this past week. This girl can really, really write. The voices in this are so authentic, emotionally gripping that I really feel like I’m in their heads as uncomfortable as that can be at times. I know this will be a rocky ride though and you know me and angst. I can’t even believe I’m reading it, but it’s that good.

On a different note, with Stanley Cup happenings, Home Ice Advantage sounds like a good one to read. I love a hot Hockeyward. Wait, there is a hot Hockeyward, right?

LJSummers: I have been enamored of that Star Wars fic I mentioned last week. Obidala, as that fandom calls the pairing. It’s called One Path and it’s by Lionchilde. She still answers reviews, though the fic’s been complete for three years. I think that’s really cool. :) This is a slightly divergent Star Wars canon, with all the main events occurring in their usual timeframe, but with the romance being between Obi Wan Kenobi and Padmé Amidala. (I love this.) At over half a million words, it’s a saga all by itself and I highly recommend it for Star Wars fans.

I’m also still reading Dreamcatcher, A Song of Ice and Fire fic, with the Sandor/Sansa pairing. We were just dropped off a cliff (figuratively) and I’m all !! about what will happen after chapter ten!

Caren: I took ya’lls advice and started Turkey Baster…and I caught up last night. You were right. I loved it. I never, ever expected a story like that to make me all clenchy, but it completely did.

On the book front, I’m working my way through Until I Die by Amy Plum, which is the sequel to her debut novel Die For Me. Ohhhh Vincent. :)

LJSummers: On the book front for me, I just finished 11/22/63 by Stephen King. I even read it hardcover. This was a really different novel and long-time fans of Stephen King will recognize how he hints at other works of his within the telling of this story. While setting this up as a story that changes history by preventing the assassination of John F. Kennedy, what this book really does is present us with puzzling dilemmas on how much we should really try to alter reality – even a bad reality. With our limited perspective, we cannot know all the ramifications of our decisions. The book’s end is bittersweet – just the way I like it.

MsKathy: Read the Silver Lining update today! Squeed, interesting details about Bella’s kids came out, and I giggled at “The warrior pose is next, and the only good thing I can say about it is that I don’t fall over as I’m doing it.” (because I’ve felt the exact same way).

MJinAspen: Hopefully the personal drama in my life will die down so that I can get back into reading fic more often again! As mentioned, I’m reading Dog Star by Spanglemaker9, and still reading The Hunger Games.

Thanks to everyone who gives us support, sends in their recs, and just generally makes our lives in the fandom more entertaining. We couldn’t do this without all of you.
See you next week!!

What We're Reading

Songster: Along with the Divergent #readalong, which by the way was a lot of fun, I have been inhaling The Agreement by Gemgirl65. Holy shizz *fans self* Very hot and despite what could be a cliched plot has a wonderful emotional backdrop. Also just found a very cute little story called We Are Young by MyLifeandHis. This Edward… this Edward, oh my, just love him.

LJSummers: I just now finished Scarlet by A.C. Gaughen. It’s a Robin Hood tale and I was absolutely enraptured after I got about thirty pages into it. If you like this kind of thing, if you liked the BBC Robin Hood… This is a great book. Will Scarlet…is a girl. :) It’s not a perfect book, mind, but it is highly engaging and I recommend it. Oh! And in honor of it being “May the Fourth be With You” day – (May 4th!) I am reading a non-canon (go ahead, I know you want to stone me) Star Wars Fic: One Path by Lionchilde

Kassiah: Oh, LJ! The author of Scarlet is having a cool giveaway on her site right now. You can win a t-shirt!

LJSummers: @Kassiah – I just went there and posted. Thank you! :) ~ LJ

Kassiah: You guise. I’m almost ashamed to tell you the title of the fic I started reading this weekend. It’s Turkey Baster by counselor (the same girl who writes My Wounded Soldier), and it’s good so far. It’s not at all what I would expect from a fic with a name like that. ETA: I caught up with this story and it seems like it’s almost complete. I like it!

MJinAspen: This week I think I’ll get to actually read something! I’m going back to The Hunger Games, bookwise, and I think I’m gonna start Neverending Math Equation this week, since I’m a loser and never read it.

@LJ last week you asked if I knew of any Carlisle vamp recs, right? I’m sorry I didn’t get to that. I will this week, though, because I dooooo. ♥

LJSummers: @ MJ I read the one you gave me and it was good. :) More would be good, too. :)

MJinAspen: @LJ wait-what did I give you? I don’t even remember! LOL

LJSummers: For a Season by giselle-lx.

Kassiah: MJ I just read The Hunger Games last month, and I really loved it. So much.

LJSummers: @Kassiah – Squee! I saw the movie on Sunday. You should, too. If you haven’t.

MJinAspen: @kassiah @LJ I am so excited, for serious. (I still haven’t read any of the HP books. lol)

Kassiah: @LJ I’ve seen the movie–more than once and I never do that! I love it!!!!

Katinki: On the fic front, I read this one shot, Candy from Strangers, today by Chicklette, and like everything she writes, it’s just lovely. I swear she has the most amazing ability to create these character voices that just… idk… work. I love it. Also, I had a ball reading a new one shot by the one and only lady who can get me to read poly :D MsKathy! <3 She recently posted Indulgence and it was… yeah, um… unf. ;D

And of course, I’m still gobbling up my usual favorite WIPs: Prism, Glimmer Darkly, & Cutlass.

On the book front, I read the newest book by Laury Falter, called Residue. I haven’t written my goodreads review yet, but it was really entertaining and I can’t wait for book 2 in the series to come out in June. This author goes the self-publishing route, and yeah, there are a few things that need a little work in her books. But I LOVED her Guardian Trilogy (read it thrice now), and the Residue Series is starting off really well. She has this awesome knack for creating a) good stories, b) fantastic characters, c) a lot of lovely, lovely UST, and d) she’s one of very few YA authors who don’t use that godforsaken love triangle bullshit angst device. No, she goes the whole fated love route, and it’s just… sigh.

MJinAspen: @katinki Happy Birthday, by the way. Hehehe. ♥ I loved Indulgence, too. Such fun PWP, which we all need every once in a while.

Katinki: @MJ thank you! ♥ :D

MsKathy: @katinki – YES, happy belated birthday!!! <3 I hope it was AWESOME.

LJSummers: In my neverending search for quality wolf fic, I may have found another winner. :) I’m all caught up with a Paul/Bella WIP called Playing with Fire by Dance Elle Dance. It’s rare to find Bella so very canon in this pairing and I am loving it.

Kassiah: I wrote a rec for Scotch, Gin, and the New Girl for TLS this week and omg I had so much fun rereading it. It’s my favorite fic, you know, and I can’t ever get enough.

Songster: OMG and Rob! Happiest of Happy Birthdays, ms. katinki. :-) I hope you had a lovely day. As for me, I have done nothing for the past day and a half but inhale Insurgent by Veronica Roth. Work was rude and kept interfering with my reading. I did catch up with Prism and Blind Spot. Both were as usual brilliant.

Katinki: @songster mwah! <3 Gah, what is it with work these days? Mine’s freaking killing me. No time for hardly anything :/ *pouts*

Caren: I, of course, devoured both Divergent and Insurgent this week. Last night I even got to meet Veronica Roth! Can I tell you how excited I was? Very. Not only that, but both books… are amazing. Sometimes authors suck the second time around, or I realize that what I loved at first wasn’t really all that awesome. I’m glad I was right and it really is just that good. I absolutely cannot wait for book three (which, she confirmed, is not titled Detergent, lol).

I also plan to start Ten by Gretchen McNeil (whose debut novel Possess, I absolutely LOVED). Homegirl has a way with the scary! Plus she’s a sweetheart.

On the fic front, I am still loving Brighter by Rochelle Allison and Blind Spot by FictionFreak95. I haven’t started anything new recently, and my update box is feeling very lonely and sad. Perhaps that’s a good thing, maybe I can actually get some writing done. :)

Songster: @caren *nods head in the affirmative* Yes to the writing! I am so jealous of your getting to meet Veronica Roth. I really liked both books. She didn’t do the over-recap, nor did she leave readers on an unacceptable precipice waiting for the next. Although, I must admit to needing to knowing like yesterday when the next release might be expected. Is it going to be Convergent FTW? LOL.

Kassiah: NOT Detergent? What will I do???? lol

Caren: Nope, not Detergent. She said they’re throwing around names, and that the doc on her computer is titled Detergent as a joke until they make a decision, lol. And I like Convergent! That’s clever!

LJSummers: I just started Stephen King’s 11/22/63 – It’s a time-travel story about an everyday English teacher who gets the opportunity to travel back in time to prevent the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Very engaging and thought-provoking, so far! I’ve also been keeping up with my favorite works in progress in the fandom, including A Forest Fire and Origins. (Yes, I am apparently still on a Bella/Jasper kick, as well as Paul/Bella. What is the matter with me? No, don’t answer that…) Additionally, I heard word that WhisperingWolf, the author of Bette Noir on Twilighted, is posting again! A post-Eclipse AU, it’s Bella/Edward and I’m glad she’s back!

MsKathy: Have been fail on the fic front this week. Hoping to catch up on some things next week.

Thanks to everyone who gives us support, sends in their recs, and just generally makes our lives in the fandom more entertaining. We couldn’t do this without all of you.
See you next week!!

What We're Reading

LJSummers: In my never-ending quest to find hot wolf fics, I found one that has enthralled me. Featuring an older Bella (twenty-one years) and the rest of the usual cast aged as well (well, those who can age, anyway…) The Ties that Bind Us by jusobele is an imprint story that is steaming up my windows. It’s a WIP as I type this, and I’m still reading what she’s got up so far, but yowza! Also still reading Origins by missrebecca. She gave us a surprising preview of her Carlisle that has me bug-eyed!

MJinAspen: I read a slash one-shot this weekend that made me cry. (Not like me crying at fic is totally unheard of, but I don’t really read a lot of slash.) It’s Edward/Carlisle AH with a BDSM scene, but it’s not all about the BDSM. Home is by dirtybrat and it’s really an emotional journey for Edward more than anything. If you’ve read a lot of Douchewards being healed overnight by the magic vagina/cock and are kind of yawning over that premise, try this one. It’s much more realistic. And I CRIED.

LJSummers: @MJ – I am looking for AU (i.e. vamp only) Carlward fics. If you have any specific recs, I’d love to know. (I have no idea why this has suddenly hit me in the face, but it has.)

Caren: I finished the sequel to Starcrossed by Josephine Angelini last night (Dreamless) and I loved it!!! I fell so so hard for the original novel, and in a time when I haven’t read many books at all lately, this one was definitely one that stuck with me. I’m so glad it did. Now I need book three!!!

Kassiah: I still need to read them, but I feel like I should wait–so many trilogies going on. I finally read High Fidelity, and ohmygod. The way this girl writes. Just utterly amazing. I’m worried about impending angst, but it’s so beautiful. I can’t stop.

Caren: @Kassiah: I love love love that story!!!

Songster: @Kassiah. IKR, she is brilliant and I think we may have to hold each other’s hands to get through it.

In other ficly news, caught up with Blind Spot by FictionFreak95 recent update has this interesting pair in N’awlin’s. Things are getting mighty interesting. Also, the recent update of The Keepsake by windchymes was a sweet and perfect first time for these two. *sighs*

I’m flying through books at the moment so I haven’t read as much fic as normal. I’ve finished re-reading A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness and raced through Shadow of Night by the same author. I love these books and am now sighing because I will have to wait a year or two for the last book in the trilogy. I am half-way through Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor, really enjoying it so far.

@LJ: have you read For a Season by giselle-lx? It’s fabulous.

LJSummers: @songster: Oh, she’s always quality. Thank you! Will check that out!

In other news, I’ve also just caught up with Through the Window by lifelesslyndsey. This is Sam/Bella and is now winding down. It’s a really unique imprint story.

MsKathy: Silver Lining is still pwning me. Sadly, I haven’t had any time to dive in to much else. I hope you all had a fabulous week.

Thanks to everyone who gives us support, sends in their recs, and just generally makes our lives in the fandom more entertaining. We couldn’t do this without all of you.

What We're Reading

Songster: I am yet again kind of in fic fail. I have been plowing through Game of Thrones (on the 5th book). Who knew I would be enchanted by a dwarf? Also re-reading A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness in anticipation of reading the 2nd book, Shadow of Night. I cannot wait.

That being said, I’m still captivated by High Fidelity by iReenH. It scares me a little, but the writing is mesmerizing and this Bella is incredible. My Mate by PrincessRachael continues to surprise me and is such an interesting take on the vampire mate bond.

Kassiah:My friend loves A Discovery of Witches and told me I have to read :)

LJSummers: I’ve been reading My Wounded Soldier by counselor, along with half the fandom. If you’re in the “other half” – go read it now! The prose is perfect for the time, the author’s phrasing wonderful and the characterizations captivating. I’m also reading Origins by missrebecca. This is a Bella/Jasper story but this Bella? Not one I’ve seen before! Mystery shrouds her and I look forward to the gradual unveiling.

As far as books go, I’ve been rediscovering The Pendragon Cycle by Stephen R. Lawhead. If you are into Arthurian legends and Celtic mythos, combined with some really intriguing interpretations, I highly recommend this series. Currently, I am enthralled with Merlin. It’s my favorite book of the Cycle. He has golden eyes and is apparently immortal. Sound familiar? ;-)

@Songster: Tyrion? He’s a one, isn’t he?

Songster: @LJ He is bar-none my favorite character in that series. He has so many impediments, but has an amazing intelligence and inherent kindness despite his Lannister training.

Ok, I might flail little here. Just caught up with the latest update of Love in Idleness by plummy. If you are not reading this, get over there and dew eet. It has a very original plot involving Shakespeare, game theory, a fairy named Mote, and the sweetest love story. It has a Geniusward who is completely swoonworthy, a bit younger than Bella, and this is a bit of problem for our heroine as the story starts out in high school. Gah. I love, love, love it.

MJinAspen: Last night I started reading That Pain To Miss by HelenaJay. I just started chapter 6, so I haven’t seen Edward yet, but I do like the premise of this AU. Jasper is very relatable, yet still very canon. Still reading Genesis, because it’s never-ending. It’s still insane, but it’s making more sense now. I can’t stop reading!

@songster I’ve had Love In Idleness on my TBR for weeks. Do you know how long until it’s complete? I usually try to wait for fics to be complete, but I swear it’s hard to wait for that one!

Songster: @mj No clue but plummy finishes her stuff so I’m not worried. It really is amazing. Also I love That Pain to Miss, a very strong Bella, which always makes me happy.

MsKathy: Still digging The Silver Lining by kimpy0464. They give me hope in ways I need it.

Also really, really loving The Girl Who Cried Wolf by chele681. It’s Angela/Leah femmeslash,
and so far we’ve had two chapters of Angela’s POV and one from Leah. There aren’t any sexy times yet, but I’m loving the way Chele is building the backstory and foundation of their relationship.

Caren: I am digging We Are Young by MyLifeandHis (@SingleStrand). I have a soft spot for a little Nerdward. It updates every day, and that’s not often enough!! She’s got me looking forward to every day. :)

I’m also still loving Brighter by Rochelle_Allison and Blind Spot by FictionFreak95!

And, can we please discuss the How to Paint a House update this week? Because IT WAS EPIC. And if you’re not reading it, I’m disappointed. To quote a friend: ‘this story is what butterflies are made of.’ It makes me feel all the things!!!

Songster: @caren I am waiting for that one to finish. I am awful with angst. But I’m adoring the other two.

Kassiah:I’m scared to read HtPaH. I still remember this gif:

from way back in the day. You let me know when it’s safe lol

MJinAspen: @mskathy YES! How could I forget about The Girl Who Cried Wolf?! LOVES. Chele’s words are so beautiful and lyrical. I really love Angela’s voice. And the scene between Leah and Jacob was the best Leah and Jacob scene I’ve read in a long time. Can’t WAIT for her to call Angela!

@songster I’m not really worried about Plummy not completing it, I’m sure she will, I just try to wait for fics to be done so I’m not reading several WIPs at once. Glad it’s worth it, though. I’m really looking forward to it.

Songster: This is totally freaking me out watching all the typing going on. @mj I know what you mean about WIPs. I only read ones from trusted writers these days.

Katinki: I’m total fail in my fic reading this week. I have about 20 new ones on my short term TBR list as well as updates I’ve not touched yet, but RL keeps giving me fits. Though *waves* at anyone in Austin, Tx – I like your town. :)

@MJ, I love HelenahJay’s stuff. Have you read Giving Way to Dusk? It’s wonderful, too!

@Songster: Shadow of Night (aka Discovery of Witches) isn’t bad. I have some issues with her series in general (namely the blatant Twilight parallels and the too convenient appearances of her gifts), but if you liked the first book, you’ll probably like the second.

Kassiah:sobsobsob, Kate! I was in the same state as you and didn’t know it :(

I have been pretty fic-fail. All kinds of fail actually. This week, I went to TLA in Houston and got lots of new books so I’m really excited about that. I did manage to catch the Sideline Collision update and read The Sky is Everywhere finally. OMG SOOOO amazing! I can’t believe I waited so long for Joe Fontaine. Also, I watched Hunger Games for the third time. Yes, I know. It’s a sickness. But I can’t help it. I love this boy too much.

I’m having a huge party when the DVD is released and you should all come. Hubs is gonna dress up like Seneca Crane. :)

Wednesdays with Teeth RecommendationDid you check out our latest Wednesdays with Teeth recommendation? Don’t miss Ethan Church by Dryler.

What We're Reading

Katinki: So the Tales from the Void Contest has announced its winners! There were some awesome fics submitted, two of which blew me away. Alby’s Anomaly is so creative and so visual (which is a big deal for me), and I just love, love, loved it. And TallulahBelle’s Glimmer in the Vein gave me fits of gaspy-girly-squeals. Everyone ought to read these two fics, even if sci/fi isn’t your normal cuppa.

LJSummers: I really enjoyed Anomaly, too! The one that won the Twist award was Weird Fishes. I highly recommend that one, too!(Yes, okay, I was one of her betas, but read it anyway!) I also just read the latest update from Bedelia on A Forest Fire. People, this is a great fic and you really need to read it to find one explanation of Canon Rosalie’s attitude. ;-)

Caren: I am with LJ, read A Forest Fire! It’s really, really lovely. I was on vacay last week, and while I was traveling I got the chance to partake in A Getty Romance by rinabina, and in Watching Her by les_16. Both are AMAZING. And if you’re not reading, you absolutely should be!!!

MsKathy: YAY, The Silver Lining updated! I think this might be the only WiP I’m reading that has updated in the last few weeks.

Songster: Kind of in fic fail at the moment except for those regular updates I’m following. I’m totally immersed in Game of Thrones. On Book 3 and I’m dying. I think it was @katinki who said don’t get close to characters because GRRM will be sure to kill them off. Jeez, I’ve got 3 more favs I refuse to admit to for fear of death and destruction.

Kassiah: I’m fic fail too. Actually, I’m all kinds of fail, but last weekend, I read the Hex Hall series and omfg I love Archer Cross!! I hope everyone will read all three books!

Caren: I’m actually reading more than I should be. LOL! I have two more to mention now. Brighter by Rochelle Allison. Come on, ya’ll… who hasn’t read her stuff and doesn’t love it? This time she’s taken our favorite people to the island of St. Croix (which is where she’s from) and as always, she’s doing a beautiful job with building a relationship. I love it.

I also started reading Blind Spot by FictionFreak95 (finally) and dear lord, I love it. I’m not typically into fics where humans have powers, but she’s done such a great job with this that it doesn’t feel cheesy or overdone. It’s kind of perfect. There’s mystery and romance and UST and I can’t wait to find out where it’s headed.

Songster: @caren, yes to the second power. Both of those are on my regular update list. I’m also reading an interesting AU called My Mate by PrincessRachael with a very different take on the mate bond.

LJSummers: I’m actually reading an AH Edward/Bella at the moment. (Go ahead, faint.) It’s come highly recommended: My Wounded Soldier by counselor. (That pen name intimidates the heck out of me, just sayin’. I keep seeing Mrs. M, from high school, writing this…) The speech patterns in here are so authentic that, though it’s hard to integrate at first, I am really enjoying immersing myself in this Civil War era story. And, if you like Civil War era fics, please check out bsmog’s The Long Walk Home. It is totally complete. All Human, All canon couples by the end. Poignant, but hopeful.

Songster: There is an absolutely fabulous new AU vamp fic that’s being written by one of our own. The latest update was just… WOW. Yep, Katinki’s at it again. Please go read Requiem.

Caren: @Songster YES! I’m also reading My Mate and love it. :)

Thanks to everyone who gives us support, sends in their recs, and just generally makes our lives in the fandom more entertaining. We couldn’t do this without all of you.
See you next week!!
