It’s almost hard to figure out what to say about A Handsome Woman by winterstale and Viola Cornuta. This is one of those stories that has incredible depth, perfect pacing, gorgeous descriptions, and a plot so good you’re left wanting more and more with each update.

Set in 1889, AHW is the tale of Edward Cullen, a Texas rancher, and his fiery-haired, Irish bride, Siobhan McBurney. Upon Edward’s request to the reverend in his hometown in Ireland, Siobhan comes to live and marry Edward. Brindy, the term of endearment she comes to bear, is fierce and passionate. Her emotions are all over the map as she navigates life in a foreign land, married to a man she barely knows, but you will fall in love with her, just as Edward surely is. I find with each passing chapter, I adore her more and more.

Their interactions – from the chaste getting to know you to the first time they are “together” are perfectly played. Their chemistry is subtle but intense. From their latest chapter:

“Are ye – yer laughing a’ me, Edward Cullen, arrn’t ye?” She dabbed at her wet eyes with the long sleeve of his nightshirt. “D’ye think I’ve gone mad out here?”

“No, not mad.” He pushed the wild strands of red hair from her damp cheek and pulled her forehead to his. “Never laughing a’ ye, but, oh, Christ in Heav’n am I sae very glad yer well, my Brindy-girl.”

Edward shifted his head slightly, let her nose ride against his for a moment as he inhaled from her like a beast scenting its mate. Their cheeks touched, nestled into each other until there was nothing more to do but press their lips together. He felt her smile against his mouth and couldn’t stop himself from doing the same. They exchanged soft humming sounds as they brushed their lips together again and again. The hums bloomed, became her flirtatious giggles and his husky laugh, and they kissed once more, already aware of the other, finally learning the feel of the soft dips and rises of the others lips.”

This is truly just a taste of what it’s like to read about these two together. Their thoughts for each other are warm and full of life… and newly blossoming love. I am just itching for them to fully realize and act upon it.

There are many things I could say about this story, but to be honest, my words simply would not do it justice. Viola Cornuta and winterstale have spent an inordinate amount of time researching this story, and their efforts show in a way that is neither obtrusive nor tiresome. They have incorporated time/era-specific details, proper language (English and Gaelic), and many, many other story-unique details, and all combined, it adds a level or richness to the story rarely seen in most fanfiction or published works, for that matter. As you read, you truly feel like you are in their world, and there is something simply amazing about that.

The entire cast of characters adds color and richness to this story, and while this pairing is very unique in the fandom, it just works. Set aside your Edward/Bella notions, I guarantee you will not be disappointed. Make sure you leave these two ladies some love! I can’t wait for you to dive in.
