What can I say about A Man of Few Words, apart from it’s freaking brilliant! Written by one of my favourite authors McGee42, this is Charlie Swan’s story told in fewer than 2500 words.
It covers his life from the point when he first meets Renee, to his first meeting with Nessie. The story revolves around Charlie’s struggle to protect Bella and understand what is going on in his daughter’s life. McGee42 manages to give Charlie an authentic voice; I can just hear him when he complains about Edward after Bella returns from Italy,
“It’s that Cullen kid. He’s a terrible influence. I wish he’d stop showing up all the time. He’s like a bad penny.”
Charlie’s humour, love and concern for his daughter shine through every short chapter. I cannot recommend this story enough; it made me laugh, it made me cry. If you are at all interested in Charlie or want to read a different take on events in Twilight you really should give this story a go.
Ah, Charlie. Do I love him so much because of Billy Burke? idk but I do know that he is a more complex character than he’s normally made out to be, and I love McGee42 for this story.
This isn’t your typical (nowadays) drabble fic. 25 chapters that are exactly 100 words each (plus outtakes). Accomplishing that is harder than you might think. I love so many of the moments that we get to see, but I think chapter 2 might be my favorite:
She’s waiting for me when I get off of work.
I’m so happy to see her then I notice that she’s twisting her hands into knots and pacing back and forth on my porch.
My stomach drops.
I thought I’d get to keep her a while longer. I know I’m nothing special, and she’s probably met someone else. She’s here to tell me that, maybe give me one last kiss and say goodbye.
I struggle to say something, anything. I can’t.
Please don’t go.
Her voice trembles.
“I’m pregnant.”
And from chapter 9:
I hear it over the radio. It’s coded, to keep the looky-loos away, but I know what it means. I drive over there, as fast as I can.
The ambulance gets there the same time I do.
The van is totaled. I can see it from here. And she was right there when it happened.
No, no, no, no. I’ve only had her a month, one month. My heart clenches.
And I laughed out loud in chapter 19:
We need to have the talk. This is gonna be painful; I can tell. My face is already turning red. Stupid tell.
She gets home, and I try to say something, but she won’t let me get the words out.
Old-fashioned, my ass.
I love how she covered so much of Charlie’s life. Not just Renee. Not just Bella. Not just superficial. He’s deep, and yeah–he’s a man of few words. Seriously, it’s one of the best things ever. You must read
