As Ants to Giants by LadyExcalibur2010

Official Description:

Their lives intersected on a single day that changed both of them forever. Now, they’re about to meet again. Out of tragedy, there is sometimes a gift.

This fic has got itself some angst, and I adore it.

Yes, you may look again – this really is FantasyMother, the woman known far and wide as the wimp who runs from angst the same way people run from clowns, and John Dillinger ran from the IRS…

But not this one.

No, the pod people haven’t landed. What’s landed is a fic that knows how to take angst and turn it into beauty, with writing that can make me cry and laugh at the same time.

Imagine, if you will… (insert Rod Serling voice and ever-present cigarette as visual) a young and cocky teenage Edward and a younger and gawky Bella, mouth full of braces, as two strangers who do no more than glance at each other but both witness and experience the same tragedy on the same day. The pain and horror of what they both experience rip them each apart, as well it should.

And that’s when a fine author steps in, and although you know it destroyed both their lives, and although you get a glimpse into what it did to them, and how they worked to move past it, the author says to you, the reader, “This is enough. I won’t burden you with day by day and week by week and year by year. This is what happened, this is how they moved past it and… here’s what happens when the gawky kid and the cocky teenager meet ten years later. This is the people they’ve become.”

And thus far in this WIP, I want to find the author, buy her chocolates, help raise her children, and permit her to pet my clown-eating dog. Why? Because suddenly we’re confronted, chapter after chapter, with an Edward so real you want to sit him down and chat with him before ripping his clothes off, and then want to chat some more. A Bella who’s strong and feisty and heaven help me, actually funny while still being a mature woman who god-damn, you want as your best friend.

I have never met a Bella, anywhere, that I wanted as my best friend. Hell, I’ve never written a Bella that I wanted as my best friend. But this one? I’d sit her down with her creator and bring out my best china.

And… I don’t want to spoil more than I already have, except to say you’ll discover a Rosalie as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside, an Emmett’s who’s proving to be worth her time, and the single most unusual Alice I’ve ever encountered – and I mean that in a good way.

Run and read. At this writing, 11 chapters are up and I drop everything when I get that alert, even if it lands on the aforementioned doggy’s head. He’s 120 pounds, he can take it. And he wuvs me.

This story isn’t what you think.

I mean, it might be about what you think it’s about, but it definitely isn’t handled in a way that you probably think it would be. Do I sound too vague? Well, lemme tell you what it’s about then. As Ants to Giants starts out in 1999, with Edward going to the airport to pick up his twin brother. While there, he notices people, including a young girl:

“I know, right?” she was saying. Then she laughed. “I know, I know. We’re just waiting for my mom’s plane to get in.” Another pause, during which Edward guessed the other person was speaking. Then the girl’s voice went lower. “Yeah, I’m in Starbucks.” A giggle and Edward wanted to smile. She reminded him of his little sister Rosalie and he hadn’t even turned to see her. “Yeah, there’s uh…a…uh huh…oh yeah…” More laughter. “Yep, and extremely hot.”

Edward quirked one eyebrow as he waited for his name to be called. He risked one quick glance at the girl and she blushed fiery red and turned away. “Totally hot,” she said again.

Used to just such a reaction from teenaged girls, he pretended not to notice. Yes, she was about the same age as Rose, probably about fifteen or sixteen. She was cute now, but in a couple of years he predicted she’d be breaking boys’ hearts all up and down the Pacific coast. Right now she was all big brown eyes and unruly brown hair along with gangly limbs and braces.

That’s it. You know how it is when you take the notice of your surroundings. Just an every day, mundane thing, right?

Yeah, until it all turns to hell. A short time later, they find out that the plane carrying Edward’s brother (and the girl’s mother) crashed and there were no survivors.

Fast forward ten years, and Edward decides to go back to the airport–just because he needs to. While he’s there, he thinks about his brother and how his life and death affected him. And he sees a girl.

About thirty minutes later, a slender young woman, also nursing a steaming cup of Starbucks, took a seat in row opposite him, facing his direction. She didn’t look up. She didn’t have a book or an iPod like so many travelers. She simply sat there, her eyes on the floor, her hands clutched around the cup.

Surreptitiously, he studied her. Something about her nagged at a memory, either too old or too buried to come to the fore very quickly. She was lovely, in a quiet way. She didn’t have the flashy kind of good looks that would garner quick attention in a club, but there was something classic about her that would draw eyes and admiration in a quieter setting where its subtlety could be appreciated. Her beauty seemed to be enhanced the more he watched her.

Finally, her eyes flashed up to meet his. They were dark pools of pain, a look he recognized quite well. And in that instant it came to him.

A gangly girl, all braces and blushes.

They strike up a conversation, and that’s where the beauty of this story really begins. I love that LadyExcalibur2010 could have made them angsty balls of emo that wallow in their pain and try to save each other–but she didn’t. They are both adults and have been changed by this horrible thing–but they don’t let that ruin their lives. They live. And grow. They make out.

“You’re beautiful,” he blurted.

Bella paused for a moment, looking surprised. No wonder, he thought with self-disgust. She’s just discovered that she’s having dinner with an idiot with no verbal filter.

“So are you,” she answered and this time it was Edward who looked surprised.

“Oh…” Then her mouth was on his and he didn’t care about coming up with a witty reply. Slowly, inexorably, she pushed him back so that his head was on the armrest. She hovered over him, taking her weight on her arms. One leg was in-between his, their bellies were touching…and their mouths.

With amazing characters and a completely unique plot, this is seriously a story that I can’t wait to get the updates for. I hope you’ll check it out.
