What do you do when the thing you want most is the one thing you can’t have? A FGB novella for LikeToead22 & Gemmabobella. Canon and non-canon pairings. AH
Word Count: 31,673
This is a story that starts with the following warning: “This story is not for the faint of heart. If you’re looking for easy answers and fluff, this is not for you. You’ve been warned. Please don’t flame me if you don’t like how things turn out.
So, from the get go, without reading a word, you know that things will be hard to read, that we wont have a HEA in a traditional sense ( if at all) and things won’t be what we are mostly used to.
We find 19yo Edward living with his father, Carlisle, who has raised him pretty much on his own. Dad has worked his ass off to raise E. And it seems there are some issues about what Edward wants to do with his life and what his father wants him to do now that school is over. Edwards wants to study Music but Carlisle thinks that this is not a respectable career and wants him to do something different or else.
On top of that, in comes Bella as none other than Carlisle’s significant other. She is in her mid twenties and has had a rough life, from foster home to foster home with no stability whatsoever. They meet one night when Carlisle tells Edward that he has been dating someone for the last few months and that it is serious. So they meet and things are awkward. Edward realizes that he is attracted to Bella and we are not sure if B is also (so far, we only have EPOV) but it seems there is something there too.
Things are moving pretty fast and, next thing you know, Carlisle has asked Bella to marry him and she has agreed. One night, right before going away for the wedding, E bumps into B in the kitchen in his house and they have a conversation where she explains to him why she is marrying his father. And then we get one of the most shocking and unexpected hot sex scenes i’ve read in a long time. But it is not what you think at all. You just have to go read and find out what it was.
What I love about this story is that Edward is in conflict with himself, with what he should do and what he wants to do. He is really fighting and struggling to do the right thing. But will he? And what will happen once Carlisle and Bella are married? I read the whole thing (it IS complete as of last friday!) and expected a completely different ending. Having Jennde warned us that this was not for the weak I was ready for something really bad to happen. But what we get at the end is…. no, I wouldn’t do that to you guys!
The story is complete (have I mentioned that? LOL!). It’s different and in my opinion, very good! So, if you are brave enough, come over and give “Between the Devil and the Blue Sea” a try.
When we were waiting for the last chapter to post, I remember DMing back and forth with carolamex about what we thought the ending of this story would be. Even with only one chapter to go, we just didn’t know. And I don’t know what I can tell you that won’t spoil this for you. This story definitely achieves the purpose that jennde set out to accomplish: to give Edward and Bella that overpowering, undeniable (canon) attraction, and put them in a situation where it was virtually impossible for them to act on it. I wanted to explore how they would react, what they would and wouldn’t allow themselves to do, what they were willing to sacrifice, and what the moral implications would be if they did decide to give in..
Damn girl.
All I can really say is that this story is amazingly well-written, with characters that I was hoping would do what I wanted the. whole. time. And right up until the very end, I just didn’t know what would happen, or how it could end well. Sometimes, though, things can’t end the way I want them to.
“Will you play something else for me?”
“Sure,” I said, straightening my back and placing my fingers back on the keys.
I played the song I couldn’t find an ending to, hoping against hope that maybe she would help me find it. As I played, instead of becoming less aware of my surroundings, as usually happened, I became hyper-aware of her presence. My head was swimming and my body was tense as my fingers flew across the keys.
The music ended abruptly and I felt her jump next to me when I stopped. “Is that it?”
“It’s new and it doesn’t have an ending yet.”
“Why not?”
I shook my head and looked down at the keys, my fingers absently playing notes.
“How do you want it to end?” she asked, giving me the impression that we weren’t talking about the music anymore.
“What I want doesn’t matter…”
I’m not giving away the ending of this story or what happens along the way. And I know that you are going to be tempted to look ahead to the end before you start reading. I’m asking you not to do that–it will seriously take away from your nail-biting experience if you do. Just grab a tissue and maybe a drink and read this story. You won’t regret it.
