If you’re a fan of the high-school society fic: Scotch, Gin and the New Girl (a story I didn’t discover until very late into my “career” as a fanficker); if you hung on, flinching but dying inside, as you read begrudged or Dear Isabella, then you know the power of a plot when executed by jandco and wtvoc in tandem.

You really have to check out Bound for Glory, the latest offering of the fandamnic duo.

This is a road trip story and a tale of self-discovery summarized thusly by the authors:

“A ridiculous tale of accidental misdemeanors, felonies, past affairs and six kids on the run from life. Not necessarily realistic, but AH anyway.”

A work in progress at press time, there are four chapters of this story currently available for your viewing pleasure. And a pleasure it is to view! From the introductions of the “usual suspects” to the conditions in which they find themselves, this is a detail-rich, personality-immersed adventure for the reader.

My favorite aspect of this story so far has been the unusual presentation of Alice.

Jasper came back to the table in what proved to be a curious situation. He had his arm around a short wisp of a girl with dark, chopped-up hair, a smoke between her lips and sunglasses on, despite the fact that it was the middle of the night. She kinda reminded me of Winona in Girl, Interrupted what with her pale face, dark hair, and grey cut-off sweatshirt. She even had black cheap slip-on canvas sneakers with a white bumper, the kind you find in a chain drugstore for five bucks.

“Oh, hello Jasper and company,” Emmett said. He was still inspecting his nails. Jasper pulled Winona in closer and smiled down at her.

“Gentlemen,” he said. “This is Alice. We met over by the dessert cooler. I’ve never seen anyone snake a slice of pie with such proficiency.”

“Hi, Alice,” I smiled at her.

“Jasper,” she said, and smiled back.

Now, I have my suspicions about Alice (called Maybe Alice and Not Alice at other points in the story) but I will only say here that I think she has plenty of secrets!

There are also secrets in the prior relationship between Edward and Bella – the characters know all but they don’t tell us a whole lot, so far! The sexual tension is all over the place, as is the snark.

Bound for Glory is an adventure. I am enjoying my time in the back of the rusty van with Bella, Jasper, Not Alice, Edward and Emmett. I think they’ve just acquired a new passenger… I wonder whom it could be?

You’ll have to read it to find out. ;-) I am sure the rest of this road trip will not disappoint!

I don’t often laugh out loud when reading fanfic, but Bound for Glory did, right off the bat. It starts off with a rough-around-the-edges Bella disappointed that her post-graduation road trip is about to be canceled.

I could hear Charlie chiding me about leaving obvious fingerprints at the scene of a crime in the back of my head, but I had more important things on my mind. Like how my summer was just ruined in one long, run-on sentence.

A quick turn of events later involving a sort-of-burglary of a gas station, and Bella is headed out of Forks towards God-knows-where in a van with our three favorite boys. We soon find out that she and Edward have a past.

I used to think Edward was tall, shy and sweet. And incredibly hot.

He had a knack for being silent. For awhile, like I said, I thought he was shy. Then I was pretty sure he was some kind of tortured brooder.

Now, of course, I knew it was neither of those.

He’s just a world class asshole.

Their previous encounters still seems to simmer under the surface for both of them, setting up a perfect love-hate relationship that is bound to lead to some excellent lemons.

By chapter three, the word ‘brilliant’ was flashing through my head at the witty banter exchanged between the characters, and the odd way our usual gang was coming together. They meet up with a version of Alice who only speaks the word ‘Jasper,’ with different intonations, and discover Rosalie in working in a strip-joint somewhere in Texas.

At the end of the fourth chapter, the six of them are packed into a van with questionable sticky spots everywhere, and a glove compartment filled with condoms and EZ-Cheese. It’s certainly an adventure, and I’m excited to read more!

If you know me at all, you know Scotch, Gin, and the New Girl is my favorite fic of all time, so I can’t really see these amazing authors cranking out anything that I don’t adore.

This story’s got everything that you expect from them: backstory that’s not spelled out for you and makes you speculate about every move, strong enigmatic characters that pull you in right away, and an adventure that you want to be on, even if you have no idea where it’s taking you. I have no doubt that this story will kill me with emo when the time comes, but I also have no doubt that the redemption will make it so worth it.

We had to stop after only twenty minutes thanks to Emmett’s grandma bladder. Edward pulled over on the shoulder of a dark road and Jasper hopped out of the passenger side to open the double back doors so Emmett could roll out.

I took the opportunity to clear something up with Edward. I unbuckled and leaned forward, using the two front seats to brace myself and regretting it instantly as there was something sticky on the perforated white leather. I closed my eyes and swallowed twice before starting.

“You don’t have to pay my way, or whatever. About earlier. So, don’t think you’re going to—”

I saw his hand go up to rub his eyes, this thing that he does, and then he looked over his shoulder at me and this slow, lazy, terrible smile just kind of spread on his face. I could barely see his eyes in the dark, but I saw that smile.

“Well. Of course not. That would make you my whore, wouldn’t it?”

That’s when I stopped resisting the urge to kick.

He twisted in the seat faster than I would’ve thought him capable of and caught my ankle before my third kick made contact.

“Act like a lady, Bella,” he said, then let my ankle go, turned back around and turned the music up.

We don’t usually rec stories that only have four chapters, but we didn’t want you to wait to start reading this. Read it now and find me on twitter to talk about it. Just don’t be like Not Alice.
