Official Description:
What happens when a scholarship athlete and an English major from opposite coasts meet in a freshman writing seminar? Will they be drawn together or forced apart by their weekly discoveries of themselves and each other? All human college coeds!
This is a fabulous story of two college freshmen trying to figure out who they are. They meet by chance and help each other on that journey.
I am hooked to this story. I check my inbox every 20 minutes on Fridays. It is borderline OCD. I fell in love with the characters in the first chapter and I fall again with every written word.
BornOnHalloween has knocked this one out of the park. It is definitely a must read.
No matter what fic I am reading, I put it down when my email alerts me to the Friday update.
Bella is over weight but excels academically. Edward suffers from a well kept secret of a learning disorder and is a star athlete. But, when you pair them up, they are unstoppable. With a background cast of their roommates, Rosalie and Jasper, his brother, Emmett, fellow student, Alice, and their parents, Charlie, Carlisle, and Esme there is never a dull moment. I have cried at their struggles, laughed at their jokes, rejoiced in their triumphs, and wanted to hurt them at their stupidity. There is nothing about this story I would change, except I wish it were real so I could meet the characters and tell them how much I love them.
Bella is encouraging willing to learn something so out of her comfort zone just to spend time with the boy she likes. She is sweet, intelligent, and caring. She has not had everything in her life handed to her. In fact, she has had a few hardships in her life. But she is dealing with them and trying to move on to the best of her ability.
Edward is fighting hard to overcome his dyslexia and to not be that stereotypical jock who is passed through his classes because of his talent on the fields, or green in this case. When help is offered he gladly takes it because he wants to do better. He strives to be the best at everything, including his friendships. He opens up to Bella in ways that he has never opened up to anyone before.
It is not hard to see where this story ends up (so far), but it is the journey that gets you there that makes every word worth reading. Check it out. You won’t be sorry.
There are a lot of things that I don’t understand, and one of them is why this story doesn’t have more attention. It’s so good. Well-written and realistic, I just love it!
Edward and Bella are college freshman and bond during their writing sessions after being paired up in their Composition Seminar English (Comp Sem 101) class. Like Shattered Glass Rose said, she’s overweight and he is a star athlete with a learning disability. I love that while they are both vulnerable in some aspects, they both have strengths.
Bella gets into a bit of trouble when she’s almost mauled by James at a frat party. That’s typical, of course, but I love how bornonhalloween takes it further, showing us exactly what she’s feeling:
[James] pushes himself off the wall and in the same motion, grabs my right hand in his left and loops our fingers together. My heart skips three beats. He’s pulling me through the crowd, and he’s clasping my hand tightly, which is helpful, because I’m just floating along behind him, not even feeling the floor.
Ahead of me, his dark grey t-shirt stretches tantalizingly across the broad ripply muscles of his shoulders as he skillfully navigates us across the room without looking back. I follow the bobbing pony tail and try unsuccessfully to calm my breathing, still my heartbeat, stop my hands from sweating.
Relax, I tell myself. Enjoy. This is really happening. This confident, sexy junior, for some reason I cannot begin to fathom, has chosen me over all the other girls in the room.
Suffice it to say, that encounter doesn’t go well. But that spurs her on to do something about her self-confidence and with Rosalie’s help, she goes on a diet and exercise plan and starts shedding weight.
Through the writing assignments and the golf lessons Edward gives Bella, their relationship grows, and though it takes some neanderthal notions for him to notice her and the way he feels about her, when he finally does, it’s sweet and sooo worth it.
I observe her vigilantly as she responds, her eyes flashing to mine with anticipation. “So, can I assume that you’re not scared of me, then?” I ask, closing in on her slightly, allowing the fingers on my right hand the freedom to brush through her hair and anchor her head in place.
“I’m terrified,” she answers, fully surrendering and flicking her wide brown eyes between the twin threats of my piercing eyes and my approaching mouth.
I hold her gaze in mine as long as I can without going cross-eyed. I’d rather not leave that unflattering image among her memories of our first kiss. My lids close one millisecond before my lips reach hers.
This story is hot. This story features characters that communicate and deal with their issues, which I find totally refreshing. This story is hot. This story is authentic and doesn’t portray any of the characters in the cliche way that so many other fics do. There’s romance and angst and that feel-good swoony feeling. Did I mention that this story is hot?
Edward knocks firmly not two minutes later, and when I open the door, he is all business. Without even looking to confirm that Rose isn’t here, which thank goodness she’s not, he’s got eight fingers behind my neck and a thumb hooked firmly under each ear.
“Gimme,” he says breathlessly, taking what he wants from me. As if I would’ve resisted.
To quote my BFF: ”Yes, please.”
