Official Description:
Conversations over coffee. Sometimes when you meet “the one,” falling is easy – as simple as talking. Effortless. You just have to find the words. AH
Word Count: 8,149
I caught a whiff of Conversations Over Coffee one day on Twitter, since I follow cosmogirl7481. Anyone that knows me knows that coffee should be my middle name, so naturally, I was intrigued. However, I was also stupid and didn’t click to read. I blame a lack of said delicious, hot, dark liquid.
Some days later, I saw another tweet about COC. My eyebrow shot up. The story was updating fast (a bonus to me), so I thought I’d skim the first chapter. When I clicked through, I saw in the author’s note of chapter 1 that she was planning to post new chapters EVERY MORNING. I almost died. I was hooked after chapter 1, so the daily updates became like my usual cup(s) of coffee – necessary.
This story is short, I have to warn you. I’ve already begged (BEGGED!) and offered bribery material of her choice to cosmogirl7481 to please write me some delicious outtakes. Until I convince her, you have 6 chapters of love right at your fingertips.
Since this was intended to be a short, dialog-intense story, I was even more interested. I really love well-written, witty banter. This story has it in spades. The tricky thing about being so dialog-heavy is that it can be empty dialog, just witty banter to be witty banter; that’s not at all the case in this story. There is so much information here, without being hit-you-over-the-head.
COC also swaps POVs each chapter, beginning with Edward, but doesn’t repeat days, which I personally find to be annoying (I like covering fresh ground each chapter).
You’d expect a story with so few short-ish chapters to be light on content, but moments like this…
“I’m not that interesting,” she says. “I only have like…I don’t know…five friends.”
“Five friends are a lot,” I tell her.
She’s biting her lip again and I’m grateful.
Looking at her lips means I’m not looking at her breasts.
Or the hint of them that I just saw a few minutes ago.
“Not on Facebook,” she says. “You probably have a bunch of friends, don’t you?”
“I have a few,” I tell her. “On Facebook. Not so much in real life.”
I don’t know why I told her that.
She makes me say things out loud.
She probably thinks I’m weird now.
A social reject.
Awkward.
… completely owned me. You get such a good sense of these two, the characterizations lovely and rich. There are funny moments, sad moments, sexy moments, and more.
The journey of Edward and Bella from customer/waitress to friends and then beyond seems perfectly paced and believable.
This story is short and won’t take you more than an afternoon to read, but I promise it will put a smile on your face and leave your heart happy and light.
Cosmo never, ever fails to make me happy with her writing.
In COC, she made me really happy. Edward is harboring a crush for a waitress (server, I mean) at a local diner. For months he’s been visiting, staying longer and longer each time, pining away for this girl.
Until one night things start to change, and these strangers begin getting to know each other…
“Well, I also know that you have some sort of job.”
“Yeah?” I ask, smiling. “And how do you know that?”
She motions to my briefcase on the stool next to me.
“Maybe I just carry that around to make pretty waitresses think I’m important.”
I wink at her.
I don’t know where it comes from – this flirting. I am not a good flirt. I never have been.
“You think I’m pretty?” she asks.
She’s blushing and I fear I’ve embarrassed her. See? I told you, I’m not a good flirt. But the pink of her cheeks makes my mouth dry and I notice – not for the first time – just how pretty she really is.
Beautiful.
I think she’s beautiful.
“Maybe,” I tell her, and she looks down.
The banter and shyness and just everything these two share in the course of a few days will make you smile and melt and swoon. It’s light and fluffy and perfect if you like a sweet Edward and a great Bella.
Now that it’s complete, re-reading it again today was like a breath of fresh air to my afternoon. And as I sit here writing this, I’m smiling. I expect you’ll be doing the same once you finish it, too. (In case you didn’t get it, that was a hint, go read now!)
I feel all…quivery and shaky writing this review. Why? Because I’m following after the amazing MsKathy and Caren, and I feel like nothing that I say to you is going to adequately display how much I want you to read this. It’s a quick read, with fewer words than many one-shots. But, it’s so deep. Cosmogirl7481 has created an entire little world in just six chapters, and I can’t get enough. I want more.
“Do you?” I ask.
“What?”
“Like to read?”
And her eyes are looking at me. Brown and rich and deep.
“Yeah, I do.”
She’s biting her lip again and her nose scrunches up.
“What?” I ask.
“I just don’t see what the big deal is about him.”
“Who?” I ask.
I look back down again, nervous that she thinks that I wasn’t listening. Nervous that she thinks I’m staring at her lips and eyes and nose. Her nose is cute.
Even when it’s scrunched up.
Especially when it’s scrunched up.
“David Sedaris.”
“You don’t like him?”
I do. I do like him and it makes me feel nervous that she doesn’t. Like I want her to like the same things as me and I don’t know why.
This story is quirky and funny and is absolutely one of my favorite things, ever, by one of my favorite people, ever.
“What are you?” I ask. “Some sort of dictionary?”
“No.” He smiles. “But I have one on my phone.”
He shows me the screen and I giggle, not because it’s funny, but because I’m relieved that he wasn’t texting.
His phone is pretty fancy.
Mine is cheap.
His phone would laugh at my phone.
“You think I’m rigid?” he asks.
I giggle.
Apparently, I’m a twelve year-old girl.
Or Michael Scott. You know. Whatever.
He notices.
And blushes.
I love that.
If you know me at all, you know how I feel about chapter 5 in fics. And this chapter 5 is one of the sweetest, most swoonworthy chapters ever. Read it. I’m serious. Go read it right the fuck now.

Just read this earlier today and absolutely loved it. I would definitely recommend it.
Short. Sweet. Perfect. <3
