Drift is essentially a story about omission and lack of communication between Bella and Edward. I know this is not a new premise, but the way Denverpopcorn reveals this story to using flashbacks and past recollections, intermingled with the present day makes this a gem of a read. This story is so well crafted. Denverpopcorn uses her words sparingly. Each sentence is filled with meaning and intent unveiling the mystery of this Edward and Bella to the reader. The author’s words are lovely and haunting.

“His apartment was loft-style and bachelor friendly, cozy enough for stranded work paraphernalia, take-out cartons, magazines, and transient love.”

I liked how the author set the tone of this story in the first chapter. We find this couple at a crossroads. As the snow day closes the city we find Edward and Bella on the edge. Will they open up to each other tell their secrets and fears or will they shut down and continue to drift?

“Holding hands, they hike the naked city streets to a corner market. She wears his favorite college sweatshirt under her coat. The threadbare hoodie crinkles snugly around her face, thief-like.”

I loved this picture…two lovers walking the deserted streets. This passage finds them out of the apartment trying to stock up on food for the upcoming storm. We find them mostly buying candy and junk food…nothing really to sustain them. Junk food and antacid…

“It’s smooth; this night with a woman who cannot belong to him or tie him down. He’s willing to breathe air into her, if it means she’ll gasp his name into the fleeting night.”

Edward and Bella have met at a bar and end up having a one night stand. Edward, a solitary man, uses his writing career to fill his life sees a night ahead without attachments. Bella, who teaches children by day, decides to take a chance and act on her feelings for this attractive man. Neither realized this night would change their lives forever.

“It’s blunt, the little ache, but useful because she knows that if she walks out of that building, it will be the end to her story: righting other people’s children, cooking too much pasta for one, hanging her days on coat racks, fumbling with groceries, keys, and a door with no extra-hands; wishing as hard as the next girl.”

Bella has a decision to make. Will she leave Edward and get on with her life, such that it is, or will she return to that apartment room and the man she’s come to love? Are they strong enough to really bare their souls to each other?

There is so much more to this story, but to reveal it would be solving the mystery of Edward and Bella. This is a voyage you, as the reader, must take. Drift is a tale of decisions, soul searching and a tale of finding love. It’s an intense journey for Bella and Edward told with deliberation and care. The emotions and feelings of these characters come through so clearly. I think you will enjoy the way that that Denverpopcorn reveals this tale to us. I know this may be cliché but I felt the author’s words many times were poetry in motion. I hope you take a chance on Drift it is so worth the read

I love this story and could barely come up with any words to articulate to you how much I think you should read it. Thank rob Marijee wrote such an awesome review for you because this fic makes me a bumbling mess.

Denverpopcorn’s words can make you feel giddyhigh one minute and then like you’ve been punched in the gut the next.

He swallows and everything hardens. “This isn’t working, Bella. It’s a bust.”

When his inclement tone enters, the vice wraps cold within, and she prays she’s getting the wrong message. “Seriously, Edward, it’s just eggs. The toast…”

His chair drags on the linoleum and he stands with his plate. “It’s not about the fucking eggs, Bella,” he says, exasperated.

And she knows.

Anger wants a go at him. Fucking jerk, how dare he? Who does he think he is?

Fear wants to get on its knees. No, no, I want to stay. Say I can stay.

“Then what is it about,” she asks, standing up abruptly, her hand on the chair for balance.

He has his back to her, arms wide over the kitchen sink. Now that he’s put the first foot forward, he’s going to continue until he can climb out, tuning out until he can no longer hear his heart beat.

“Nothing. A distraction. I don’t want this anymore.”

Every insecurity washes over her. Figures; if she couldn’t make it with a boy, how did she ever expect to make it with this man?

“A distraction? That’s it?”

“That’s it. There’s nothing more you can take from me.” This much he knows is true. She’s a married woman, and by all rights, not his for the taking or the wanting. Last night’s amplified fear kept him awake and cold. He sat for hours with the TV on, looking out the window, watching her sleep, pacing a remorseful track around the room, caged.

“God, Edward, I just want…” to tell you. But she’s a mess inside, caught completely off guard by his sudden hostility. She has so much to say and if she opens her mouth, she’s afraid it won’t make a dent in his newly-donned armor.

You want my fucking soul, he thinks bitterly. She’s had her fun, he’s had his fun. Now he wants peace and the end to this needle-nosed torment nipping at his heart.

I agree with Marijee–this is like reading poetry in motion. It’s dramatic and ohmigod sooo hot. There’s also a really great original character. Don’t miss out on this amazing story!

I read this over the Christmas break and it is one of the most descriptive, beautifully written fics I’ve come by in recent times.

Holy cow, ladies. Thank you so much for the write up. You’ve done me great honor, not only for linking it, but for the excellent insight. There are layers that I don’t even see.

Since it’s completion, I’ve turned away from it. At times, too happy to disregard it. But your review has allowed me to enjoy it all over again. You put a smile on my face.

    Cheers!
