RaeCullen says: In Eye Contact, Edward has Aspergers Syndrome (AS) which (in case you are unfamiliar) is a high functioning form of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Although each person with ASD is different, they do show some defining characteristics. These include, but are not limited to; rigidity in routines and extreme interests in specific objects or activities. Individuals with AS have difficulty recognizing and understanding different emotional states, see everything in a rational light and generally have above average IQ’s. They do not understand abstract concepts; i.e. emotion and sarcasm. I started reading Eye Contact when it was only four chapters in and I remember being incredibly impressed by both the originality of the story and how accurately Silver portrayed AS. She has clearly done a lot of research on ASD/AS. As someone who has worked with children that have ASD and done a lot of research herself, I am continually awed with each EPOV chapter she writes. Fear not, EC is not a lesson in developmental disorders, but it is a love story to the core. We watch Edward and Bella as they begin to form a relationship, which gets off at a very rocky start might I add, and watch as that relationship grows. As Eye Contact makes its way into its final chapters, we’ve had the opportunity to watch Edward and Bella overcome multiple obstacles due to the biases of those around them and Edward’s AS. One of the things I love so much about Eye Contact has been watching Edward and Bella learn from each other. Both the characters are well developed and growing together. I think that’s the sign of a truly well written story. Edward is adorable in all his idiosyncrasies (I’m pretty sure I swoon every chapter over how freakin adorable Edward is), while Bella is incredibly kind and compassionate. Again, Silver does an outstanding job in her accurate portrayal of what it would be like to be involved romantically with someone who has AS. In my opinion, Eye Contact is the most well written, researched and original story in the fandom. So what are you waiting for? Go! Read it now! You will instantly fall in love with Logicward. I promise you this.
MF’er says: So, I’m a little ashamed to admit this, but Rae_Cullen actually sent this to us months ago… and in the chaos that is my inbox, it was misplaced. Boy am I kicking myself for that now, because what a wonderful story this is!!
I fell in love with these characters after reading the prologue and spent the entire weekend reading and just growing more and more attached to them as I got to know them better. Bella is a selfless, brave young woman and Edward is a brilliant man who can’t fathom the concept of love because of his condition.
After a somewhat surprising first meeting and his need to earn her forgiveness for his mistake, they begin a friendship and in the process of it all, they teach each other new things, and it’s just… so beautiful.
This story is the true definition of a love story and what two people have to overcome to get their happily ever after. If you haven’t already begun reading this wonderful story, I hope you will, because it’s definitely one you won’t want to miss!!
