Don’t miss the outtakes and futureshots, Property Status Reports.

There’s a block of pure gold anchoring this excellent story, and it’s the Edward you wished you’d met in your twenties, the Edward you hope your daughters could date, and the Edward your husband might possibly be at his very best moments if you happen to be particularly lucky.

Twenty-two year old Bella Swan and her mother rent a house from Edward, and Edward falls for Bella, despite the fact that Bella isn’t exactly forthcoming about her past. Renee has issues, and the two have rarely lived in any place longer than six months.

With almost daily updates, iambeagle pulls her readers into the story and hooks us with one of the kindest, sometimes silly while most compelling Edwards I’ve read in a long time. Bella has a serious problem on her hands, but the drama is countered with deftly written moments of lightness as Bella and Edward get to know each other and fall in love. Here’s the scene where Edward first tries to coax Bella out with him:

“Why not? You’re not a fan of margaritas? Tequila makes your clothes fall off?”

“No.”

“Not a fan of meeting new people?”

I rolled my eyes. “No, I just-”

“You think I’m coming on to you? I’m not, I swear. I have a girlfriend.” He raised his hands and took a small step back.

“Uh…” I frowned.

“Oh, wait.” He visibly relaxed as he said, “You’re a lesbian, aren’t you?”

“What? No!”

“It’s okay. My friends and I are very open minded. You can still come out with us.”
I tapped my foot. “You realize you’re very ridiculous, right?”

Edward knows little about being a landlord, but he’s so drawn to Bella–and she’s so desperate to escape Renee for a few hours–that they find themselves together often before Edward’s sister Alice steps in and raises questions about the Swans.

After Edward does some investigating on his own, he demonstrates his devotion and determination to protect Bella over and over, breathing both love and hope into Bella’s tightly locked heart. Just as Bella’s life threatens to spiral out of control, Edward takes a stand and gently nudges Bella to make the choice that will save her life.

This is dramatic, slightly angsty stuff, but iambeagle keeps the story from being too heavy by keeping the focus on Edward’s steadfast feelings for Bella. It’s also one of those stories where the author’s notes are funny and heartfelt. I read today’s update while procrastinating about what to make for dinner, and was rewarded with this terrific suggestion:

You can have Bella’s Mushroom Ravioli shipped to your house. No joke. I googled that shit. Just in case anyone needed any ideas for dinner.

Give this romance a chance so you’ll know what kind of Edward to look for when you or your daughters are dating.
