It’s time for fun summer reading (or if you’re in the southern hemisphere like me, it’s time for something hot to make you forget the winter cold), and though I tend to be a vamp reader, sometimes you just want a green eyed Edward who doesn’t shimmer like a disco ball when he steps out into the bright light of day. Enter the gorgeous, down-on-his-luck musician/med student currently crashing on Rose’s sofa. He’s got it bad for Bella, but he has no idea that they’ve already shared a very intimate history. Bella, on the other hand, remembers everything.
“At thirteen, I developed my first crush.
At fifteen, he kissed me. At seventeen, we had sex. At nineteen, he and everybody else still thought I was an untouched virgin.”
Immediately I had to know, “How is that possible?” The answer, not surprisingly, is alcohol and a helluva lot of it, but understanding how it happened doesn’t ease the unbelievable UST as we wait for poor Edward to get a clue and realize that not only do they share a past, but Bella would very much like for them to share a future.
The flashbacks are steamy:
“Move back on the be’ morrre.” His voice was rough, hoarse. I gnawed on my lip harshly, shimmying backwards on my elbows so that my knees no longer hung off the side of the mattress.
Edward undid the fly of his jeans and bent to slide them down his legs before stepping out of them while stumbling a little. He held onto the mattress for stability. I was breathing so damn hard I could have hyperventilated.
We’re really doing this.
I’m about to have sex with Edward!
Holy shit!
With a serious face and heavy, dark eyes, Edward crawled toward me, between my legs, making me spread them to accommodate his knees…
“Relaaaax, Bellaaa,” he whispered, warm and moist, against my lips, making me shiver.
Meanwhile, the present day is filled with secrets, humor, a way-too-personal prize from Alice’s bachelorette party (I’m talking about you, Mr. Black, and no, I don’t mean Jacob) and the fallout from Edward’s alarming failure to knock before entering a woman’s bedroom:
“Bella, have you got a pillow that’s…” I could say no more. My eyes adjusted to the low light in her room to realize that Bella was… touching herself under her sheet.
A lot.
Huh? No, she wouldn’t… She isn’t…
But the look on her face confirmed it. Her eyes were beautifully worried as if pleading with me for something and her mouth was agape in the shape of a loose ‘O’.
Holy fuck, Bella’s having an orgasm!
Stay up late reading this one on the computer, or better yet, print it out and take it with you to the beach, because Forgettable is an unforgettably sexy summer read.
Bella is secretly in love with Edward. Edward is clueless and too caught up in his own life to figure it out. We’ve seen this before, folks. So you’re thinking, “Why should I read it then, Dulci?”
The answer is simple: despite a familiar foundation for this fic, Forgettable is a complicated, emotional story that will make you want these characters to get together so much, but at the same time slap Bella for being so vulnerable and kick Eddie boy in the junk for being such a jerk. Sounds fun, right?
The fact of the matter is, Edward is kind of an idiot. He has this habit of getting so wasted he “time travels.” This is a little term my college friends and I used to use when we’d drink too much. You know, you’re at a party, having a good time. Next thing you remember, you’re in a bar. Then you wake up in your own (hopefully) bed. Or on the couch. Or hugging the toilet. Yeah, time traveling. Feel free to incorporate that into your vocabulary
Anyway, Edward drinks a little much. Those seem to be the times he gives Bella the attention she craves. They’re wonderful and heartbreaking all at once…because Edward never remembers. Was he revealing his true feelings for her or just using her because he was drunk and horny?
Prepare yourselves, because if you’re anything like me, you’re going to become very frustrated, angry, livid, rage-y, and a variety of other adjectives, toward both of them. For god’s sake, Edward takes Bella’s virginity and doesn’t remember! Then Bella hides it from everyone, including him, for years rather than coming clean! Yet you STILL want them to figure their shit out and get together. Because they have a sweet friendship eventually. Because Edward leans on Bella for support. Because we learn so much more about their pasts and how they’ve both truly felt over the years.
When things finally do start to fall into place for them and truths are revealed, little by little, there’s still a long way to go. They both need to establish (or rather, reestablish) their trust, as well as relationships with their friends and family. They’re learning to be together and seeing why their previous attempts at romance (or just sex) with other people didn’t work. They’re not just crossing a bridge together, they’re building it. Not the easiest task with their fucked up past, but nonetheless, I’ve really enjoyed watching their journey. I think you will too.
