Hearts Keeping Time by Adair

Official Description: Bella struggles to learn to love and trust after having her heart broken by her indie rocker boyfriend. She’s sworn off guys indefinitely, especially musicians – that is, until she catches the eye of rising rock phenomenon, Edward Cullen. AU AH R.

Hearts Keeping Time is one of those special stories — it not only grips you from the beginning, but it gives you a giant hug in the process. I was a skeptic at the start, knowing how Miss Adair likes to shred hearts & all that, but I dove in, because she has such an enormous talent & she promised it wouldn’t injure my ticker. &, well, I’m glad I did. Her Bella is cute & quirky, great with banter, & entirely relatable. Edward, well, he’s rock star sex & he has floppy Leo DiCaprio hair.

How can one say no to that?

You can’t. So don’t. Read it & swoon with me. You won’t regret it.

Hearts Keeping Time begins with Bella going to see her boyfriend of six years, the newly MTV-minted it rock guy (for some reason I’m thinking he’s Justin Bieber-esque) Eric Yorkie, play a show. The inevitable happens: he’s getting it on with his manager, Heidi. As Bella nurses a broken heart, she gets a job writing articles about local bands and scores an interview with Since Volterra, a super popular band, all thanks to Alice’s familial connection to SV’s drummer. And guess who the lead singer is?

Yep, it’s an Edward as a rock star fic. Jake owns a coffee shop, and Tanya is Edward’s terrible ex-girlfriend. We’ve got Angela and Jess as Bella’s roomie’s, and the usual cast of Cullen characters.

Bella’s half-afraid to get involved because of the debacle with Eric, and Edward seems to be kind of nervous, as well as moody in general, because she’s a reporter.

I have a few theories on where this one’s going, and I think it’ll involve something being accidentally published in the magazine, something that should have remained private. Oh, and Tanya and Eric will join forces to split Edward and Bella up by way of planting stories or photos in the media about Tanya and Edward being back together, culminating in Bella blowing up Edward’s house. Okay, maybe not that last part. Hell, maybe none of it, but it’s certainly fun to speculate.

One passage that had me giggling is this hilarious scene where Edward sends Bella a note after he leaves for tour to let her know his favorite color, to which she responds by sharing a cookie recipe. Hah!

Bella,

My favourite colour is blue but I intend to tell the interviewers it’s red.

PS. Please write back from your address. I don’t have it and Alice won’t give it to me. I don’t know how reliable a messenger she is.

His favourite colour? I groaned, embarrassed by how ridiculous I was being. I ‘d just spent all day worrying about this damn letter and what he’d written, and he’d just informed me of his favourite colour. Maybe it was because he was afraid of Alice snooping, I couldn’t be sure, or maybe this was yet another display of his bizarre sense of humour. That seemed more likely.

Pulling some paper from my desk, I sat down and chewed on the tip of my pen as I decided what I wanted to write back. ‘Blue is my favourite colour, too’ seemed to be a bit too forward, so instead I wrote the first thing that came to mind.

Edward,

Chocolate Chip Cinnamon Cookies Ingredients

[redacted by mac because you should read the fic if you want the recipe]

I’m a sucker for rockerward (yep, I still mourn the loss of VR!), and I couldn’t resist this fic when I saw it rec’d on Edwardville. Like QueenofGrey said, this fic is cute and quirky and so much fun.

I really love how real this story is. Edw
