It’s pretty much no secret that I have a huge crush on EchoesOfTwilight and everything she writes. She continues to amaze me with the talents she possesses, and this one-shot was (of course) unsurprisingly fantastic.
All of us who are writers know that slash in particular is somewhat frightening if it’s not something you normally do. For a first timer to take a chance and attempt something like this, and then for it to end up winning the public vote in the Slash Backslash 2.0 contest… is awesome. This is exactly the reason these contests are so fantastic, sometimes it brings new authors out of the woodworks or showcases talents some authors have that aren’t always visible.
I was lucky enough to pre-read this early and then I had to sit on my hands for several weeks waiting until I could post it here, for those who haven’t ALREADY read it, to see!
I Just Have to Ask is an angsty ball of unrequited love and heartache that will take you on twists and turns through Jasper’s eyes, while he suffers and eventually tries to turn off his feelings for his bass player and longtime friend, Edward.
“You sounded fucking awesome,” Edward offers, the first words he’s spoken to only me since calling my name in the wings of a stage that has already faded into the night behind us.“I felt good,” I say, and it’s true. The catharsis of releasing even a fraction of what I feel is blissful; for a few hours I can open a valve and set free scalding love, preventing my own implosion. Ignoring my glass, I grab the bottle, taking a long pull before tipping it toward him. “And my rhythm section kept me on track.”
Here, where I have to speak in voice, not in song, this is the closest I can come to telling him the truth: that his presence keeps me grounded, centered, sure of who I am and what my place is.
Edward laughs, shrugging. “It’s what I do.” He takes the bottle, and I am mesmerized by the way his tongue lingers on the smooth glass rim, still warm from my lips. A low hum reaches out, gripping my desire for him in its fists of sound.
The pretty pretty words, the characters, even the music, everything about this story will pull you in and make you want more.
Edward tastes of tequila and sweat, as sharp as his mouth is soft, rough stubble and sliding tongue taking over my senses. I kiss him fiercely, an anchor that keeps my shaking body from flying apart. The confused roar of the crowd is white noise, the blinding lights and suffocating heat welcome as within them, I am given the final piece of myself.I follow when he tries to break the kiss, unwilling to let go, to awake from this moment of madness to find myself alone in cold, tangled sheets. He touches his tongue to mine and I moan with the little breath that remains in my scorched lungs, finally pulling away to gasp for air.
Instantly, his lips are at my ear, teasing my skin with feathers of promise. “Let’s find somewhere to be…alone,” he says, blood rising to my surface as I realize we’ve literally had an audience to our intimacy.
I could literally quote the whole thing to you, there is no part that isn’t fantastic. But I’ll leave you with my favorite part…
Like that?
Just like that.
Now what are you waiting for? Go read! If you’ve already read it, READ IT AGAIN! And then leave EchoesOfTwilight some love!
