In Vain by Bratty-Vamp

Official Description:

Bella is a girl who desperately wants control over her own life. Edward is a Volturi guard who is accustomed to being in a position of power and control. Together they struggle with a force that neither of them have any control over, whatsoever. OOC, AU

Growing up, Bella had been kept on a short leash by her mother, and all Bella wants is to claim some control over her life. At nineteen years old, her mother sends her to Italy to visit Aro, a man who has been her sole benefactor, but whom she has never met. Once there, Bella meets Aro’s “son”, Edward, and eventually discovers that she is bound to him in ways she never imagined. Extremely set in his ways, Edward is a Volturi guard who is accustomed to being in a position of power and control. Together, Bella and Edward struggle with a force that neither of them have any control over, whatsoever.

I am a complete slave to this story, but contrary to its title, it’s not in vain. I could not emphasise enough how much I love this story. There is an element of mystery and intrigue that is present in every chapter, and it’s captivating to say the least.

Being a vamp story, In Vain has a certain darkness to it. But it creeps in gradually, and the anticipation is chilling. Bella’s world is transformed before her eyes, and the reader discovers it alongside of her. I simply love that aspect. I don’t think there’s been a chapter I read yet where my heart wasn’t pounding in anxiety.

I think my favorite component of In Vain is Bella and Edward’s attraction to each other. And I mean that literally. When their skin touches each others’ they experience an inexplicable physical reaction… a magnetic pull of sorts to one another. They both feel an incredible draw that actually intoxicates them. I find it absolutely fascinating and unique and it’s just another facet of the story that portrays things that are beyond their control.

With wide eyes, I stared at where our skin was connected. It was freakish and amazing. I was pretty sure I was hallucinating. But it felt as though some strange magnetic pull tugged between us. I actually stumbled forward a step, at the force of it.
If Edward hadn’t looked as equally amazed by the sensation, I would have sworn it was entirely my mind playing tricks on me. He lifted my arm up, staring at where we were joined.

Edward and Bella both strive to attain some form of control in this story, both over each other as well as themselves. They are living within boundaries they cannot break, and to watch them struggle with their limits is thoroughly compelling. They push each other to the edge, waiting for the other to break, or ultimately, submit. It’s a constant battle with those two, but as much as they bump antlers, they also manage to find common ground.

Bratty-Vamp is a magnificent story teller. Her beautiful descriptions create a vivid scenery that unfurls around the reader and captures them in a world that lasts long after the last words have been read. In Vain is just another gem in the treasure chest that is her mind. I can’t insist enough that you check this story out. It’s brilliant.

There isn’t anything that BrattyVamp writes that I don’t love. And this is most certainly one of them. In a time when I’m reading so little fic that I barely have any updates coming in, it’s nice to know I’ve always got a good one from her to look forward to! In Vain is yet another example of her creative mind and the interesting way she twists and turns these characters we all love so much. She’s taken them to so many different levels and In Vain is yet another that’s just different and wonderful. If you haven’t already discovered this gem, or any of her other stories, you’re missing out!
