Kassiah says: I was really having a hard time choosing the o/s I was going to rec today. I wanted it to be hot, but something that you would generally not read if it wasn’t a one-shot. My girl TwiSherry suggested Jane to me, and I was like “uhh–Jane? Why do I want to read about her? ew.” Sherry went on to tell me that I should get off my holier-than-thou-high horse and read it. Since she put it that way, I decided to obey. And boy was I surprised. Turns out, there’s a lot more to this Jane character that I thought, and maybe I misjudged her a little bit.

I was immediately drawn to the canon characteristics of this story. It takes place when Edward seeks out the Volturi, asking them to end his life because Bella is “dead.” Jane sees it as the opportunity she’s never had:

It’s clear he is confused; like me, turned too young to have understood adult relationships first. Unlike Marcus, however, he wasn’t truly mated. Vampires mate for eternity. Humans don’t have eternity. All he needs is a vampire mate to comprehend.

Aro dismisses him, telling him to return the next day for their answer. As he leaves the castle under Felix’s watchful eyes, I give him a head start. I have a plan, and in the end, he’ll change his mind about dying. He’ll join the guard, as I know the brothers will offer him a place. With his talent, how can they not? I can make him stay with us, giving me a mate and Aro yet another jewel in his crown. I must not think it in case Aro touches me, but I wonder how much power we will have as a mated couple: my power combined with his mind-reading without touch…

We’ll be invincible.

Jane’s frustration at Edward choosing Bella over a life with the guard and a life with her is evident. She truly believes that she is the right choice for Edward, which is just so real to me. The night after Edward refuses Aro’s invitation, she goes out into the square and finds someone to “bring home.”

He crosses to me, his mouth at my neck, his hands roaming my back and hips.

“What’s your name?” he breathes.

“Jane.”

I don’t ask him his.

What happens next is primal and almost beautiful–seeing Jane fall apart and be put back together by her beloved brother. I love how easily she goes from seeing the guy she picked up in the square as a him to an it. I love how algonquinrt uses the events that surrounded Edward (and by extension, Bella) showing up in Volterra to explain how broken and unaccepting of Edward’s choices Jane was really feeling.

In the end, she’s just a girl who wants a boy to love her. And she’s willing to wait for it.

Whether you are looking for a one-shot that delves a little bit deeper into canon or something that’s simply not your typical fic, I highly recommend Jane.
