Minuet in F (you) Major by LightHeartLoreli

Official Description: Dissonance: A chord that sounds incomplete until it resolves itself on a harmonious chord. Will calculating conductor Edward Cullen and spirited cellist Rosalie Hale write an adagio for love or a requiem for love lost? A FGB Novella for Team Cellolie.

If the title Minuet in F you Major doesn’t get your attention, then just know the fabulous writing of Lightstardusting and LoreliD will do the job. When I saw that there was a new Edward and Rose (yes, you read that correctly) story and I saw the summary, I was ecstatic. I happen to love Edward and Rosalie stories and feel that sometimes that combination can be so much more powerful than Edward and Bella, but that is a discussion for another day.

In Minuet in F you Major we meet both Rosalie and Edward who are involved in the world of orchestra music. Edward is a conductor and Rosalie is a cellist. They meet when Rosalie auditions for a chair in his Philharmonic orchestra. As Rosalie auditions, Edward sees a very independent, maybe stubborn woman who he feels would not take well to his direction. Rosalie is turned down, and then of course, we see sparks fly.

He shrugged apologetically, but in her opinion not really, and once more repeated the word. “No.” He watched her jaw tense, her lips twitch; her face was so easy to read. She was livid… and absolutely stunning.

He didn’t back down from her. He kept his smirk firmly in place; she needed to remember it was she who had auditioned, asking to be judged. Finally, she collected her cello, finally breaking the stare as she exited stage left.

Along the way, we learn about Edward and Rose’s daily life, both of which are not what is expected. Edward lives a very routine life, no variations from day to day. Rosalie has a few secrets hidden up her sleeve that shows her softer side. She is sarcastic and funny, and knows who she is. She is awesome. We also learn that both love their pets dearly, and Edward’s dog, Jake, works as a helpful tool to bring these two closer and is adorable.

Watching these two interact with each other, seeing who can gain the upper hand, has been so fun. You can almost taste the tension and I am just waiting for that explosion to happen.

If a Rose and Edward fic scares you, I really, really think you should venture out a little bit and try this story out. I think this story is wonderful and enjoyable. It has everything a great story needs. Take a chance and check it out.

It’s no secret that I’m a little bit close minded when it comes to what I’ll read. I don’t usually venture into the unknown, unless I’m pretty darn sure it’s going to be great. Jumping into this story was effortless – because of the title, and because of the authors. Both of these girls are absolute sweethearts, and I know they have a passion for what some in the fandom consider unconventional pairings.

Which is what this story is… but don’t let that deter you from reading, because it’s fantastic.

The story opens with the ‘no’ heard round the Philharmonic. Rosalie Hale is a gifted cellist. She’s used to getting her way, and having auditions that are really just formalities. When she shows up at the Philharmonic to audition for second chair cellist in the orchestra and meets the conductor… things change.

She had done her homework and knew the people for whom she’d be auditioning. The panel consisted of four board members for the Philharmonic, and of course, the conductor, Edward Cullen. She had not yet met him but she knew of his reputation. Young for a conductor, recently divorced, a bit broody, but a brilliant composer. Though Rosalie wasn’t one for gossip, she couldn’t miss the whispers traveling through the musical community. That was because they weren’t quiet, they were loud. That’s how things were in their world. Even still, she looked forward to working with him.

Oh, Edward. He’s structured and stiff and lonely since his divorce. It’s just him and Jack (his shepherd-chow mix). But that’s not all there is to him… When the first chair cellist has a family emergency, what’s a guy to do?

Eat some crow.

That’s right – he has no choice but to call the one person he’s just made an enemy out of. Not wanting to do it over the phone, he takes a huge chance and calls to request that they meet in person. Rosalie agrees, and asks him to meet her.

When Edward shows up… he finds something different than he expected…

“What kinda musical instra-instra-instruments do you play?”

Edward looked around, appearing almost sheepish. “Well, I play the piano,” he offered.

Rosalie chimed in. “Oh, he’s being shy. He can play lots of instruments. And he’s a conductor for the Philharmonic!”

The children oohed at the fancy terms. Leah’s tiny hands found her hips and she tilted her head to the side, her silky pigtails flipping. “What does that mean?”

Rosalie’s smile was laced with saccharine. “He waves around a little stick and tells other people what to do.”

At only five chapters in, we’ve already seen that these girls have created two very incredible characters. That they’ve taken the time to research what they’re writing about and that the future promises to be filled with some wonderful things.

These two are bound to be explosive together and undoubtedly make each other crazy in all of the best ways possible. I personally cannot wait for it.

Do yourself a favor, open your mind to new things, and go read this wonderful story!

Hell hath no fury like a celloist scorned… especially when it’s Rosalie. Minuet in F (you) Major may win the prize for my favorite title in recent history, but I’m also completely drawn in by the level of detail paid to the cello playing. I’m told (by Lightstardusting herself, since I met her in person last weekend) that’s compliments of Chele681, one of the prereaders.

One of the things that always, always sucks me into a fic is realism. It’s pretty apparent when someone is writing something they know a lot about or finds the expertise to fake it. Whether it’s virgins writing lemons or someone who’s never been to a small town writing about life in Forks, it shouldn’t be done. Writing what you know makes a difference to the passion of what gets put down on paper (or a computer screen) – so I VERY much appreciate anyone who takes the time to either learn or find the right expert help.

Now that my gushing is out of the way, I’ll say I like the tension between Rosalie and Edward in this fic. Sometimes Rosalie and Edward pairings fall flat because we all want to obsess about Bella and Edward and writing these two together can seem forced. In this case, Rosalie’s not a raging bitch – she’s just self-assured and reserved. Now that I think about it, Edward can be described just the same. It makes sense that the two of them would immediately be at odds when they meet, but it creates some lovely strain. The discomfort in the air around them is palpable.

This fic is still beginning, but so far my favorite passage has to be this:

Edward would handle the children. The music commonality was all it took for the kids to surround Edward, firing questions at him. The caregivers stood back, watching the kids as they encircled Edward. Some started forward in an attempt to rescue him, but Rosalie just shook her head slightly and shrugged.

“He waves around a little stick and tells other people what to do.” One of the caregivers snorted, trying to cover a laugh. They didn’t know the extent or reason of the strife between Edward and Rosalie, but they’d be blind not to sense the underlying tension below the surface, even while the two adults played nicely in front of the children.

Minuet in F (you) Major is definitely going on my alert list.
