Set in the ‘wagonwheel’ days this is a story about extreme hardships, loss and finding love however you can.
Against her wishes Bella is uprooted when her husband and his brother decide to ‘stake a claim’ on the prairie. After Edward and Alice face yet another loss due to the hardships of a life in the wilderness, an illness sweeps both families and Edward is left with only his daughter. When he goes to check on his brother’s family, he learns that Emmett was also lost to the fever and his sister-in-law is on the brink of losing her own life. With no love lost between Edward and Bella, he has no choice but to bring her and her son to his homestead and try to nurse her back to health while trying to not lose everything they have come so far to build.
As her health improves Bella shows that maybe in tragedy, comfort can blossom into hope and love…
One of the things that I love the most about this short story is that Edward and Bella didn’t like each other at first. But, he promised his brother that he would take care of her if anything should ever happen to him. It wasn’t easy, and Edward struggled with his promise.
If we’re going to survive this winter, we have to work together.”
“We don’t need your help. We can do just fine on our own, thank you very much.”
“That’s not what I was saying…”
“I don’t want to hear it. I’ve said my piece and I’m going home. You are not welcome on our property.”
“But, Bella, I promised Emmett…”
“Don’t you ever speak his name to me again. Do you hear me? I’ve had to put up with you all these years because you were his brother, but now he’s gone and I don’t ever want to see your face darken my door. Goodbye, Edward.” She whirled and started back the direction she’d come.
“But, Bella…”
She whirled back and glared at me fiercely. “Goodbye, Edward,” she hissed, and left me standing there on my own with my mouth open.
Emmett, need your help here. She’s your wife. I know I promised, but she’s forbidden my help. What do you want me to do now?
In answer, the heavens opened up and rain spilled from the sky.
Eventually, they work together and you know what happens after that
This is a quick read that has drama, hotness, and is funny at times, too. Check it out!
