Official Description:
Newly divorced from his high school sweetheart, single father Edward Cullen is trying to get his life back on track. That is until, with the help of his daughter, he finds what he didn’t know he was missing in an unexpected place.
My dirty little fanfic secret? I am a sucker for a sweet, fluffy, Daddyward fic. I’ve read a ton of them, but only fallen in love with a few. In my opinion, it’s difficult to create a doting father who isn’t stripped of his own personality. Ditto for creating an adorable child without resulting to overly sweet and charming cliches.
In Out of Captivity, IdPattThat does a fantastic job creating an Edward that is both a loving father and a man grappling with single parenthood, career, and dating after divorce. Edward has primary custody of his daughter and is managing their lives well on his own–and then he meets Bella. He has to figure out how to date again after ten years off the market, how to bring Bella into Reagan’s life responsibly, and how to make time for his own life when he’s so busy with family and career.
He’s a strong man, a great father, and has a restrained sex appeal that is bubbling under the surface (I personally can’t wait for it to, er, burst free). Bella is passionate about her career and cautious in her personal life–she reads like a real grown-up Bella as opposed to a flighty teenager. All of the adult characters are well drawn, including Rosalie, Edward’s ex-wife. It would be easy to cast her as “the bad mother” and make her one-dimensional, but IdPattThat gives her character depth and emotion.
Edward and Rosalie’s daughter, Reagan, is cute but not cloying. She’s an adorable kid, but not a perfect angel–sometimes she argues or disobeys, just like any real kid. She struggles with moving back and forth between her parents’ households, but overall she’s a well-adjusted, bright, and loving child.
Edward and Bella share a kindness and emotional honesty that allows them to grow closer despite the potential roadblocks they face. Their chemistry is evident in the witty banter they exchange and the relatively chaste but charged kisses they’ve shared so far–there is definite smut potential here!
I love Out of Captivity and look forward to the updates every week–it is a breath of fresh air, a sweet, slow burn, and a story for grown-ups who still want to believe in love. I hope you like it too!
I don’t have much to say other than: 1) I love this story and 2) Daddyward is my kryptonite. Seriously adorable; all of it.
