One word: “Strokeward”. Congrats to LauraLoo7 for the creation and introduction of a new and amazing Edward to the fanfiction vernacular. Who knew that some stuffy-ivy-league-blue-blood-prep-school-tie-wearin’-elitist sport could get this fangirl’s blood a pumpin’. For those of you who like me are not that familiar with the competitive sport of Crew, the author does an excellent job of getting the reader immersed immediately into the middle of all things rowing by not only exposing us to and defining words commonly used in Crew but also by describing the feel that rowing on the river invokes in its devotees. Though only 15 chapters long, the author packs a lot into this unique and not to be missed story which includes the normal cast of characters in new roles where almost all of the canon couples pair up eventually.

Edward Cullen, a senior and the captain of Brown University’s eight men crew team, is a dedicated oarsman who wants to culminate his colligate rowing career by earning a spot on USA’s rowing team for the next Summer Olympics. The key to achieving this goal is to form a seamless working relationship between the stroke, Edward, and the newbie coxswain (person who steers the shell/boat), Bella Swan. But not just Edward’s dreams rely on their successful partnership. Alice, the coxswain for the four men boat, recommends her friend Bella, a complete novice at this newly opened position, but B’s inexperience has Edward troubled until he learns her real motivation for her taking on this role. Initially, sparks fly and not necessarily in a good way but who wouldn’t get all tongue tied and flummoxed over a very sweaty and muscular E (le swoon). Though their first training session is a complete fail, to the extent that one if not both of their dreams are on the verge of falling apart, eventually feisty Bella appears and puts cocky Cullen in his place. But don’t worry, this humorous story is not about heartfail but is about two people whose passion for rowing spills into passions of another kind. *wink*

Like the title to her story Power Ten, a rowing term for pulling your ten best strokes,LauraLoo7 gives us her best. So if you’re not interested in a story with a naked rowing Edward, steamy boathouse encounters or a passionate love connection that reveals there may be more going on beneath the still water’s surface, feel free to pass on this COMPLETED fic but I assure you that you’ll regret it. So on that note, I’ll leave you with the driving beat and guitar riffs of that 80’s classic rockanthem by Billy Squire, The Stroke, “Stroke me, stroke me (stroke)…You got your number down…Stroke me, stroke me… Say youre a winner but man youre just a sinner now” (check out this video for a fun 80’s blast from the past).
