Official Description: Bella tries to keep her distance from Edward, thinking that she can’t be hurt if he is never more than a pretty face. Too bad she doesn’t let Edward in on her plan.

AmeryMarie says: So my beta, Vanessarae (who is pretty awesome), tells me one day that she has an idea for a fic. Of course, I go all fangirl and beg to see it because I know its going to be something good. She gives me the basic rundown, sends me what she has and I died. D-E-D! It’s all sorts of awesomesauce and fuckfunny. Partially inspired by the John Hughes classic, Sixteen Candles, as well as a consortium of other ’80′s flicks, yet it has a totally modern feel and never comes off as cliched, tired or forced. V skews the characters, canon quotes and plot–in some cases a little, in some cases a lot–so that it all feels fresh yet remains recognizable, and the characters, especially Bella, are infinitely easier to relate to. Lets face it, first adolescent love hardly has the urgency or intensity of Romeo and Juliet and, despite how it feels at the time, its never life or death. First love is awkward and messy and ridiculous and leaves you feeling foolish and usually a little embarrassed.
Seventeen Cakes captures all of that brilliantly. The fic is pretty E/B focused, and not a lot of time is really spent developing the other characters, but for me it hasn’t felt that way. In fact, my absolute favorite character is Alice. I love how she is Alice, only more… Alice-y? Like if a Tasmanian Devil and a fangirl got married and had a baby, Alice would be that baby… if it had A.D.D. and a crack addiction (honestly, she reminds me a little bit of Six from Blossom). She just doesn’t feel half-baked to me at all. If you are looking for something that is lighthearted, doesn’t take itself too seriously and always keeps you laughing, Seventeen Cakes is a damn good choice and I highly recommend it. A lot of first timers make the mistake of biting off more than they can chew so that the story fall short, but so far V has successfully managed to avoid those pitfalls. This is really a good freshman effort. She is only four chapters in right now, and hoping to have the fifth one up by Sunday. I suggest reading it stat so that you can get in on the ground floor.
MF’er says: How do I even begin to count the ways I love this fic already?? I was sucked in from the first chapter and I haven’t stopped obsessing over it since. I love the humor and the potential for fluffy goodness that we have here and I can’t wait to see where V takes us. The pop culture references are icing on the proverbial cake as far as I’m concerned and like the other girls said, get in now while it’s new – if you don’t… you’re missing out!!!
RedVelvetHeaven says: I’ve got my pompoms fluffed and ready to cheer this fuckawesome story and it’s super fuckawesome writer on! If you have not yet had the opportunity to meet Vanessarae1 on a thread or Twitter or anywhere else she frequents, you must find an opportunity. She is by far one of the nicest people I have met in this fandom and she makes the most insanely HOT Robtastic welcome mats (photo displays) with hilarious commentary that I have ever experienced. But…beyond her personal amazingness is this super funny, super cute story she’s writing called ‘Seventeen Cakes’. Chalk full of 80’s pop culture references, awesome music, an adorable Bella with a debating inner monologue that keeps me giggling all the way through, and one of the sweetest Edwards I have ever read. ‘Seventeen Cakes’ opens with Bella in full crush mode over Edward…however, Edward does not even know she exists. BUT…she does not want him to know! She just knows that if she were to ‘know’ him beyond his pretty face, she would be disappointed…the image shattered. She wants to keep her distance and play it safe. However, once Edward finally does meet her, he has other ideas. Will Bella be able to stay away or will the ‘real’ Edward win her heart? I love that this is not your average high school fic. V takes these two, along with the usual suspects and brings something new and fresh to them. Give ‘Seventeen Cakes’ a read…you won’t be sorry! But you will be giggling! Be sure to leave her some love with a review too.
Kassiah says: I don’t have much else that I can add; I love hs-fics and am a sucker for a super sweet Edward. You can’t get much sweeter than him. And I love VanessaRae. Check this one out.
mozzer0906 says: I saw Seventeen Cakes on the rec list for this week and once I clicked on the link I was instantly sucked into the world that VanessaRae created for her characters. I think her writing is very witty and enjoyable to read. I like that this is based loosely on the Sixteen Candles premise, but doesn’t take every prompt from the movie. To me, this is a wonderful homage to John Hughes – it has the fun pop culture references I so adore, but beyond that fantastic character banter, quirky characters and fun to read inner monologues. I look forward to where the author takes this story and highly encourage you to do the same.
