Before everyone who knows me starts freaking out – Yes, I read a fic rated “T”. Now get off my ass!
Ok, so, I was sitting in bed, laptop opened and just staring at my computer screen. I’m not even gonna lie, I was totally burned out on p0rn and smut. Finger banging and cum swallowing had pretty much ran its course in fan fiction for me on this particular day, and I decided to delve into the world of “T” rated fics. I wanted to find something that did not have a shit ton of reviews and I was willing to leave my comfort ‘all-human’ zone to track it down.
Enter the bouquet’s “Strange Bedfellows”. The first thing that caught my attention was the summary. I do love me a well-written summary. This one hooked me with words like, “uncovers”, “wonder”, “weirdly”, “coincidence”, and “Chief Swan”. (Heh, yeah, Charlie!) To me, this spelled out a human Edward co-mingling with Charlie and some sort of mystery around Bella. In other words = WIN.
We open with Edward as the transplant to Forks. The author weaves canon story line in to this so perfectly while changing the plot so thoroughly that I never worried about getting bored with familiar references. It was actually refreshing to read something that had the characters respectably true to Stephenie’s vision and not some crazy OOC gone wild version. (Hush, you know you like a break from it, too!)
What I thought would be a mystery in this story, has turned into multiple mysteries. With each chapter, new mini-intrigues popped up. Some were a bit obvious (but I’m a genius so, you know, don’t feel bad if you don’t catch them) and some totally had me slapping myself in the forehead for missing them. 13 chapters in and I have questions, Ms. the bouquet. I won’t ask though, I like the delicious anticipation too much.
Instead of quotes, today, I’m going to tease you with sneak peeks for this story. Because, you should be reading this. Step away from the too-hott, NSFW, panty ripping, orgasm explosions. The chase is sometimes just as fun as the capture. I said that.
Feel free to steal it.
Teasers from “Strange Bedfellows” to entice you…
* Lonely Edward befriends Chief Swan and his curiosity sparks when Charlie opens up about his daughter.
* Edward’s dreams start to get very strange.
* Why in the hell has Edward had random black outs over the years and the doctors say nothing is wrong.
* Why is Alice now filling the empty seat in class that used to be Bella’s.
* What happened to the boy who hit Bella with his truck and what’s Emmett’s role.
* What really is going on with Ed Masen Sr., and all the secrecy with Edward’s mom.
* Who left the flash light in the woods. No, seriously.
* HA. Why can’t Jasper pull the wool over Edward’s eyes.
* How cute is Edward as a normal real teenager with awkwardness?
the bouquet has written something unlike anything I’ve read before. From the very beginning my head was spinning trying to figure this one out.
I stared at it, and pretty soon I wasn’t looking at the phone or the bed. I was barely in the room, in fact. My blood pounded loudly in my ears, rushing through my head in hot, roaring waves. The waves covered up the sound of voices, soft and rapid, speaking words I couldn’t understand in hushed tones. It was like being underwater.
Underwater, I thought, remembering what to do. I closed my eyes tightly and held my breath, and I imagined swimming upward through the deep water toward the surface. Control slowly returned to my pulse, and just before I broke through the surface of the imaginary depths, I heard the voice clearly, without any muffling or distortion.
“You were lucky this time. You shouldn’t go into the woods by yourself.”
I opened my eyes with a sudden start. The spell was over.
With moments like these, it’s hard to resist Strange Bedfellows.
As I read the final line, a cold chill ran through me and became a violent shudder.
“Heavy stuff, for a first meeting,” I joked. “Anyway, I’ve sort of become friends with your dad. That’s why I’m here. I hope you don’t mind.”
I paused. Charlie would be back in a few moments, I was sure.
“Since I probably won’t have another chance to tell you this, I’ll just go ahead and say it.” I took a deep breath. “You’re the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen, and I wish like crazy that we could have known each other.”
*contented sigh*
Make sure you check this one out.
In case I haven’t said it a bajillion times already, I love AU. More than the alt-New Moons and Breaking Dawn rewrites, there is something about original AUs, with canon couples and vampires pining over humans, that reel me in, hook, line, and sinker. (You think Charlie would like that? Heh.)
Right now, I am obsessed with Strange Bedfellows and the outtakes that the bouquet has provided. Sure, I’ve been told for months to read this story, but I’m always the skeptic. Yet once I did start, it all made sense — the hype, the fangirling, the endless tweets. This is a fanfic you would be remiss to pass over.
Let’s talk about how fantastic this Edward is. Of course, we all know that his “blackouts” and strange ways he relates to people are because of his innate ability that has not yet manifested itself the way it would if he were a vampire, but he doesn’t know that. Still, it plays a really interesting role in his life as a teenage boy. From the first meeting, he realizes that there’s something more to Chief Swan’s hesitant talk of his daughter, and Edward feels the need to apologize for his unobservant father’s behavior. That brings about an odd but fascinating relationship between dear Edward and our favorite Stache.
“Edward! Can I help you with something?” Charlie still wore his uniform. He looked wary, not that I blamed him. He probably thinks I’m here to add insult to injury and egg his house or something, I thought.
“Hi Charlie. Everything’s okay. May I come in?”
“Well, sure.” I stepped inside and looked around awkwardly. It was the home of a bachelor, all right. There was a shotgun leaning up in the corner of the living room, and a basketball game in progress on the flat screen. The fading scent of Charlie’s scorched supper explained the open box of pizza on the tiny kitchen table. “Have a slice,” he offered. “I can’t eat all this myself.”
“Thanks,” I said. I was starving after skipping breakfast and lunch. Besides, it gave me a reason to sit down so we could talk. “Ah, Charlie, I wanted to apologize for this morning.” He started to protest but I raised my hands. “No, please. My dad – well, he’s a lawyer. Tact isn’t exactly his strength in life.”
“Well, I appreciate that, Edward, but it’s not necessary. Neither of you had any idea – about –” he started to choke up, so I jumped in again.
“No, but I still thought it was just the right thing to do.”
“You’re a good kid, Edward. Forks needs citizens like you, who’re anxious to right the wrongs. Those that can be righted, that is.”
It’s only moments later when Edward finds a picture of the Chief’s elusive daughter, Bella, and the story take a heightened turn. Strangely, Edward feels a draw to the absent girl already, and he wants to become a part of Charlie’s life for a slew of reasons.
As the story develops and Edward learns more details in this mystery, I will promise/warn you that you’ll be staring at your computer screen with “WTF” eyes about a thousand times. There are suspicions and presumptions, but the bouquet presents this story in such a way that it is unpredictable and exciting.
Of course, mysteries are eventually uncovered and Bella and Edward truly meet, but you won’t have a clue what is coming next in the story.
Like I said above, this a must read. As it, drop whatever you are doing (okay, not babies, if you’re a SAHM), and get your tush over this story. It’s exciting, confusing, and best of all, full of Edward and Bella moments that will have you on the edge of your seat, just like Twilight did the first time you read it. Oh yes, I went there. And I meant it.
So what are you waiting for?
