isakassees says: Take The Ice by bellamarie117 is an adult, all-human fic taking us to the alternate universe of Minnesota. Some people may only see it as a WIP and wonder how they could be intrigued by a story only five chapters in. Easy, read the first chapter. And I might be nice and not say ‘I told you so.’ It is her first full-length fic, and it leaves you wondering why she’s been holding out on us for so long, when her cute little O/S First Time Caller proves that the talent for storytelling has been here all along. Either way, I’m just glad she’s finally decided to let her creativity out of the proverbial bag and is sharing it with the rest of us. Let me ‘splain.
Bella is a recovering Olympic medalist skater, living on her own for the first time in her life. Renee-lovers beware. You cannot help but despise this woman as you listen to her override and berate her grown daughter as though she were merely clay to be molded. We get to watch Bella slowly learning to stand on her own two feet, albeit with a crutch, and a reaaaally hot guy at the airport to help carry her bags.
Enter Edward, a hockey player who is not just another hockey whore looking for a Rink Skank. He’s charming and adorably unsure of himself, and you know from the small glimpses bellamarie117 has given us of him so far that there is so much more to him than a pair of skates. And I’m dying to find out what that is.
You really feel Bella’s loneliness as she makes friends for the first time in her life without the interference of her mother. All the usual suspects and pairings are there, with a truly likable Rose, and a mature, unflappable Alice.
“We’re like Romy and Michelle. Or Cher and Dee. Buffy and Willow. Bella and Alice. It’s just destiny.”
A perfect depiction of the instant friendship between the two, and Rose proves outgoing, rather than her various other abrasive portrayals common in twific. They help to bring her out of her shell, show her what life can be outside the world of competitive figure skating. And it doesn’t hurt that Edward is Alice’s brother.
Edward and Bella are early in the dancing around each other stage, but the attraction is there, and it’s a slow burn, which I’m a diehard fan of. Nothing like some good ol’ delayed gratification. Makes the end result that much sweeter when satisfied. And because I know she’s a fan of the HEA same as me, I have no doubts she will satisfy.
MF’er says: I love Take the Ice so much, I recommended it on The Little Known Ficster when I guest reviewed for them. Here’s what I had to say about it:
We all watched the Olympics this year, didn’t we? Come on, you can’t tell me you didn’t indulge in a little bit of the Ice Skating coverage! Well, even if you didn’t, here is your chance to get in on a little toe pick action with this adorable story.
The introduction brings you into the life of Bella Swan – an Olympic medal winning Ice Princess who has suffered an injury on the ice and decided that returning home to Minnesota during her recovery is a good option.
While at the airport after her arrival, she encounters a very… enchanting stranger, who helps her out after a mishap with her crutches and introduces himself.
Edward.
She’s immediately enamored with him, and it seems he just might be as well after he leaves an invitation on the table before they’re separated so she knows how to find him.
As Bella begins to settle into her new life, she has trouble getting this green eyed sweetie out of her mind as she forms a quick friendship with her new neighbors – Alice and Rosalie – and their boyfriends, Jasper and Emmett, who are professional hockey players for the Minnesota Wild. These characters are some of the best incantations of these four that I’ve ever read; their interactions are fun, adorable and in a lot of cases, hilarious.
In the process of getting adjusted to her new life, new friendships and new found freedom, Bella discovers that the doctor she’s traveled to Minnesota to see – Dr. Cullen – is her new friend’s father.
And that may not be the only unexpected connection she has to these new friends of hers. After she learns that Alice has a second older brother – Edward – who also plays for the Minnesota Wild, what will happen? I guess you’ll just have to read it and find out!
The story is written entirely in BPOV and has four chapters posted that are full of great writing, fun characters, clear dialogue, and lots of great potential for the future.
Kassiah says: Some time ago, bannermaker extraordinaire HeatherDawn was making the banner for this, and I was immediately intrigued. I wanted the story-right then.
It was worth the wait. I love the ease of this story. It’s not angst but it’s not pure fluff either. The characterizations are great and the storyline is believable. Jasper is adorable and Edward is absolutely swoonworthy:
“What are you scared of?” he asked gently.“Falling,” I laughed, trying to hide how truly worried I was at stepping back out there.
“I won’t let you. Problem solved. Anything else?” he said confidently, leaving no room for doubt that he’d do exactly that.
I can’t wait to see where bellamarie117 takes this story! Definitely check it out
