vixen1836 and wickedcicada say: We were talking one night a few weeks ago, and the subject of fanfiction came up (surprise!). As often happens, each of us said, “I have to tell you about this great story I just read.” After we rushed in to share the details, it turned out that we were both talking about the same story, The Cocky and the Cougar, by IKSS (pronounced “eye-kiss”).

Originally recommended to us by the talented ObsessingOverEdward (of Holding Out for You fame), The Cocky and the Cougar reads like one of those snappy cinematic comedies from the 1930s and ‘40s. The plot is fast-paced; equal parts witty and dramatic, but its sharp banter is entirely suited to a modern audience.

Almost-divorced from her cheating husband Jacob, Bella is the hard-driving, ultra-professional thirty-eight-year-old director of the credit department for Con-Vert. Being good at her job and careful with her reputation at work doesn’t preclude the occasional harmless flirtation, however. In the story’s opening scene, Bella reveals that she is a sucker for “The Cocky”—an arrogant, confident and charming young man who cares little for the differences in their age, and more for the allure of Bella.

While out one night with her younger friends Rose and Alice, Bella runs into Jasper (“Mr. Kissable”), who is a graphic designer at Con-Vert, and his gorgeous, mysterious friend, Edward. Though immediately attracted to Edward, Bella decides that his looks make him more suited to Rose. However, it isn’t long before Edward lets Bella know that the woman he’s really attracted to is her.

Despite their obvious age difference, Bella wants nothing more after meeting Edward than to give in to the beautiful temptation he represents. But the revelation that he is Con-Vert’s newly hired director of sales (due to start work on Monday), is the equivalent of an unexpected cold shower to her ardor. Fortunately, Edward puts all of his considerable persuasive power to work in overcoming Bella’s reservations. They decide to “swim in the company pool” together, and in doing so, start a wave of corporate gossip that threatens to capsize more than just their careers.

The cast of characters includes a blunt, foul-mouthed business owner (Carlisle); an aggressively flirtatious and possibly dangerous cost accountant (James); friends with secret and not-so-secret romances (Rose and Alice, respectively); a talented credit assistant with a dearth of self-confidence (Jessica); a misogynistic, duplicitous and uncooperative traffic director; and a jealous customer with a taste for the male employees of Con-Vert (Victoria).

Truly an original, this is an addictively mature tale wrapped in snark, wit and characters that leave you panting and pining for more.
