Wow, when Kassiah asked if I was interested in doing a Rewind recommendation for The Dominant I got a knot in my stomach and my knees started to shake. How could I, just a nobody twific fangirl, even attempt to convey the impact tara sue me’s stories about the exploration of the D/s lifestyle had on fanfictiondom? I mean this story is a classic and is on almost everybody’s greatest hits list. It takes me back to freshman English assignments of writing essays explaining literary masterpieces like Jane Eyre, To Kill a Mockingbird and Doctor Zhivago? Where do I begin? Hell if I know, but I told her I’d give it a shot, so here we go!

Okay, so I guess the best place to begin is the beginning. As a stumbling late to the party Twilight FanFiction reader, I kept on coming across Tara’s dark fantasy stories that deal with BDSM relationships and was immediately leery. I mean, I’m just not that kind of girl. I neither have any personal experience with it nor am I interest in reading about abusive sex stuff. Sure, a little kinky fun playing around with silk blindfolds and fur lined handcuffs is sinfully seductive and brings an impish twinkle to my eye but whips and chains, no way! Then the more I read, the more I found authors I respected who had this story on their Favorites recommended reading lists. Obviously, I was missing something here. Either this fanfic universe is filled with deviant sex crazed perverts, which by the way the jury is still out on *winks*, or there is a piece to the BDSM puzzle that I’ve overlooked. After putting on my big girl panties, I decided that it was time to walk on the wild side and check out TSM’s stories for myself. To my shock and pleasure, I discovered I had it all wrong. Tara takes great care describing that to her characters, dominant/submissive role playing is about discipline, control, trust and respect and not abuse or degrading others. I was hooked!

Out of the trilogy, The Dominant is my personal favorite mainly because it is written in EPOV. Really, who doesn’t want Edward whispering deliciously sexy words in their ears! Though as suggested by Tara, I read her BPOV story The Submissive first and it was helpful to get insight into why a woman like Bella would desire being a submissive to the infamous Dom Edward Cullen. However, although I came to understand B’s reasoning, somewhere in back of my brain I still considered E a bit of a bully. In The Dominant, the author throws back the shutters to Edward’s heart and mind to reveal a beautiful, complicated but compassionate man who respects and values the gift of submission and ultimately love given by an unassuming librarian which puts any of my remaining bulling concerns to rest. Lest you think that this is just a PWP (porn without plot) story, TSM does an excellent job of relaying the trials and tribulations of this fated couple as they struggle to balance their desperate desires with the restrictions of their everyday lives. Last but not least let me state for the record that this is one of the hottest, sexiest, powerful Edwards out there and the chemistry with Bella sizzles not only in the playroom but also in the Rare Book Section where she works. Gawd, I love this oh so naughty couple! Remember that this is a NSFW fic and access to replacement undies may be required.

Hopefully this review does justice to this story and acknowledges Tara’s role in raising the bar for readers and help setting the standard for other authors who are now big fans like me of this BDSM dominant/submissive fanfiction genre. The best thing about this review is that I reread The Dominant and like the worn pages of a beloved literary classic it was well worth the time reconnecting with an old friend. So I encourage anyone who has yet to discover tara sue me’s talent to read this trilogy and for those of you who have been lucky enough to have found this treasure earlier, take the time to revisit this classic again.

Here’s what we had to say back in the day:

MF’er says: If you haven’t already read this I’m surprised, but I’m not. If you’re like me, you might have looked at the description and thought: “BDSM? Um, no thanks… Not interested!” Let me tell you, you’re wrong wrong wrong. You’re missing out on greatness. Tara’s writing is superb. I can’t begin to describe the emotions she was able to pull out of me with every single chapter of TS and now with TD, it continues. Being able to see both sides of the story is amazing. While reading through TS I had so many assumptions and ideas in my head about what was actually going on between them and now I’m discovering that I was wrong on a lot of it… and it’s even better than I imagined. Tara has planned a third sequel to the story titled The Training, which will pick up where TS/TD ends and I absolutely can’t wait.

Kassiah says: yeah, what she said. I don’t know what made me start reading this, at first when I saw “Dom”, I thought it meant Mobward. Oh, how young and innocent I was LOL Then I was like, I can’t read about THIS, I am Catholic! hehe Now, I love this story and cannot describe the emotion and just fuckhotness that Tara pours into this. Just absofuckinglutely fabulous.
