Official Description:
Three stipulations are keeping Edward from receiving his inheritance money, one of them being he must obtain a serious relationship. His solution? Pay Bella to pretend to date him. There’s absolutely no way this plan can backfire. AH, EPOV
After being kicked out of his Aunt and Uncle’s house, Edward has to connive to figure out how to scheme and ride through life a little longer. Sound complicated? This makes for a great premise and is how we’re introduced to The Inheritance by IamBeagle.
“I didn’t want to be a doctor. I couldn’t follow in his, and my uncles, footsteps. It wasn’t me. It never would be me. I lacked the compassion and understanding. I just couldn’t connect with people that way. I was almost jealous of Emmett for possessing that quality.”
Yes, this Edward has a disconnect from true feelings. He lives in the shallow and pretty world that has been given to him. He’s never had to work for anything, really work for anything… until now. Courtesy of his brother, Emmett, he finds a loophole to gaining access to a large amount of money, money that is rightfully his, but that contains some major stipulations.
With dollar signs in his eyes, Edward is determined to get his hands on that money, but not all is as easy as he thinks. As part of his plan, he needs to appear to be in a serious dating relationship which is completely foreign to him. An admittedly proud “manwhore,” he knows not just any of his hook-ups will work in this situation. But a certain brunette who works at the local bar just might fit the bill.
After negotiating his way into her life, Bella Swan takes on this challenge. I should say that naturally they find each other physically attractive, but that’s just a bonus. It’s the way she doesn’t accept his BS, can give it back just as strong, and is smart about how to play him that makes this story so enjoyable. They may have made a deal, but she’s going to play by her own rules.
“She was pretty chill, so tolerating her was easy. She got along with my friends and could probably out-drink me. She also didn’t put up with my shit, which was a nice change compared to every other girl I had been around.
What I was trying to say was I liked Bella. But, this wasn’t news to me. I obviously had some sort of attraction, some pull towards her. Otherwise, we wouldn’t be in this situation right now.
Her ass also had a lot to do with the attraction, not going to lie.”
That quote right there shows what I love about IamBeagle’s WordVomWard. Edward is changing but not willingly. He’s learning along the way. He’s obnoxious with a huge side of inner sweet. He’s arrogant but not closed off to the possibility of something more. He’s just not expecting more when he puts his plan into action and that’s part of the fun.
The Inheritance shows how sometimes you have to be smacked upside the head to realize the opportunity you’ve been given. This story is funny, clever, and has a fantastic well developed relationship between the brothers. But more so, I love reading the interactions between Bella and Edward – the texts, the banter, and that they know exactly how to wind each other up. She shows him that there’s more to life than the superficial stuff and starts to bring out the compassion that he thought he was missing all along.
IamBeagle has a fresh style of writing. The Inheritance is a well-written story that has more beneath the entertaining surface that feels thoughtful and follows a meaningful and necessary path. I’m enjoying this story immensely and have a blast tweeting with the author as well (she’s @Megschmegg on Twitter – go follow her).
The other night, I was telling my friend why she should read this story. Here are the quotes that I gave her to convince her:
This fuckhead was right. Bella wasn’t interested. Why waste my time trying to make her interested when I had two sluts practically finger fucking each other on the pool table waiting for my dick to grace their mouths?
and
A real relationship? The mere thought made me shiver in my seat. I just wasn’t a relationship kind of guy. Everything starts off exciting and new and you want to just touch the person for the sake of fucking touching them. Then, out of fucking no where, everything turns into comfy socks, meet and greets with the parents and then eventually sucking me off and expecting me jerk it into an old t-shirt because said relationship had just brushed her teeth.
No, thank you.
You know me–you know I love doucheward. And this story’s got the quintessential doucheward. He’s stubborn, and he’s real, and I love him. Yes, this story is predictable–you know Edward and Bella are going into this arrangement but will find themselves having feelings. What makes it so awesome is that the characters grow, but totally stay true to themselves. Edward fights it every step of the way, until he realizes how stupid he was being. But he doesn’t turn into a bucket of sunshine and rainbows. He’s still a douche. He still makes Bella rage, but he’s different somehow.
“Okay. So go on. You told her you…loved her?” Rosalie tried to keep from smiling.
“I did, yeah. She didn’t take it so well.”
“What did she say?” Rosalie pushed.
“Something along the lines of the only reason I think I’m in love with her is because I finally found someone who will put up with my shit.”
“That sounds like a pretty good reason to fall in love with someone,” Emmett agreed. “What else is there?”
“Right? That’s what I thought.”
I seriously love him and his inner monologue. I love Bella and how feisty she is. I love Emmett, and Alice, and even Rosalie. There are a few twists and turns in there that will keep you on the edge of your seat. I can’t say enough good things about this. One more chapter, and it’s complete–so read it right now!
