Word Count: 4,469

I wish I had found this one-shot a long time ago. This is straight up prime-time-television-worthy drama. In less than 5,000 words, KTBass gives readers of Trapped a real glimpse into the characters’ histories and the dynamics that make them a family. It starts off as a mystery:

[dcs_p]A machine whirs in the background. Over the faint buzzing comes a steady, pulsing series of beeps. Fear creeps slowly over him. It smells like a hospital.[/dcs_p]

[dcs_p]He is too scared to open his eyes. Frantically, he wracks his memory, trying to figure out how he’s gotten here and what happened. For one terrifying second, everything is completely blank – he can’t remember anything.[/dcs_p]

[dcs_p]The machine’s beeping intensifies.[/dcs_p]

[dcs_p]As his frenzied mind casts about for some detail, any detail as to who he was – who he is – his brain starts to fire. His name is Edward Cullen. He is twenty-nine years old. He lives in Chicago. [/dcs_p]

…and gets more mysterious:

[dcs_p]The blackness flashes red. He wants to wake up. He wants to wake up and punch Jasper in his stupid fucking face, but he can’t explain why. He is overwhelmed, and things start to teeter. He imagines taking deep breaths. He thinks about blustery winds and lake smells and the tiny tinkle of the bell at the front door of the store. Anything to calm him down. Anything to keep him here.[/dcs_p]

[dcs_p]“I know,” Bella replies after a long pause.[/dcs_p]

[dcs_p]“He never tried…he never gave you any indication – “[/dcs_p]

[dcs_p]“That doesn’t change anything,” she whispers, and he wants to feel her touch so badly he can scream.[/dcs_p]

I don’t want to give the story away, but the way she describes the way Edward feels, from the beginning to the end, is so real. It isn’t fluffy or smutty and doesn’t have any orange juice, but it’s truly amazing, with perfect dialogue and a compelling plot. I hope that you’ll check it out.
