Official Description:
Edward’s life was a non-stop party – the drinking, the drugs, the girls – he was completely out of control. The night he woke up in the hospital with a broken arm, two broken ribs, cuts, scrapes, bruises and charges of felony possession of a controlled substance his father gave up trying to save him. Determined to get back in his father’s good graces, Edward befriends Isabella, the only daughter of Carlisle’s close personal friend who has come to live with the Cullen’s for the next year while she fulfills her scholarship to study contemporary ballet under the prestigious Victoria James at the Washington Academy of Performing Arts in Seattle. Edward’s plan backfires when Carlisle forbids his son from being with Bella, but can Edward keep his distance now that he’s found his new addiction?
Secrets are a great premise for any story. Add in a past dotted with some serious indiscretions—drugs, drinking, and sleeping around—and a disappointed, disillusioned, defeated father, and you’ve got my full attention. And that’s where Turning Pointe by Viridian6 begins.
Enter Bella, the only daughter of Carlisle’s college roommate, who has come to live with the Cullens so she can attend the Washington Academy of Performing Arts. Dancing is her life, her port in the storm when everything else around her was changing. She knows exactly where she’s going and how she’s getting there, and she takes full responsibility for the choices in her life.
There are two sides to TP’s Edward, and sometimes he has trouble not being an asshole. Truth be told, I didn’t really like him at the beginning of the story. He’s unfocused, impulsive and impetuous, and the sum of his bad choices has irrevocably changed his life. The other side of Edward is introspective and thoughtful. He wants to do the right thing but is conflicted over whom to please. He’s a lost soul who hasn’t figured out who he is or what he wants out of life.
Edward and Bella are a study in opposites, and you know what they say about opposites attracting.
The feelings between Edward and Bella are new and intense. Viridian6 does a wonderful job of weaving emotion into their interactions. She has a knack for leaving hints that make you wonder what’s going on in a character’s mind.
One of the most riveting and intriguing parts of this story for me is the relationship between Carlisle and Edward. Carlisle is cold and closed off with Edward. Edward is trying to change and live up to Carlisle’s expectations, but Carlisle’s completely given up on him. It’s easy to understand Carlisle’s parental frustration and disappointment in Edward’s choices. Yet it’s equally difficult to grasp why he won’t give Edward another chance or acknowledge the progress Edward has made. To make matters worse, Carlisle instructs Edward to stay away from Bella, a demand that Edward can’t possibly meet because he’s already fallen for her.
Edward tries to have his cake and eat it too by carrying on with Bella behind Carlisle’s back. He also knowingly keeps his past from Bella, fearing it will change the way she feels about him. With so many secrets to keep, something’s gotta give.
Viridian6’s writing is eloquent and flowing. The tone and style of writing match well with each character’s point of view. The touches of canon she adds in remind us of why we fell in love with the series and characters in the first place. I’m excited to see where she takes us from here.
I really like Turning Pointe, especially how multi-faceted Edward’s character is. I like all the characters, including Jake, and can’t wait to see where this story is going.
