Pretty much everyone knows I’m a sucker for a good Jasper/Bella story, and to date, I’ve read a lot of them. Some are incredible, some are all right, and some suck me in from the first moment I start reading, and find me, at the end of the tale, with my breath held and my hand at my throat, no longer reading, but inhaling, consuming, absorbing the story, because it’s no longer words on the screen, but people in my head…in my heart.
What I Tell Myself by tiffaninicole is one such tale. It’s a o/s and a fairly quick read (which is a good thing, given how I held my breath reading it) about a high school aged Jasper and the new girl Bella.
Tiffaninicole’s style for this story is comprised of short, tight sentences and short, tight paragraphs that pull you in from the word go. It’s a good mirror for the Jasper she’s drawn, who narrates this story:
She walks into the cafeteria surrounded by my easily excitable peers and the expression on her face is one I know well— one that I wore just two years ago: New kid desperation.
Her eyes quickly scan the sea of faces, no doubt trying to find an escape from the endless barrage of questions and idle chatter. She’s frantically looking and looking and when those wide brown eyes meet mine, her silent plea is clear as day.
And because I know that I’m not the one to save her, I look away.
This is a fantastic little story that will leave you wanting more – more Jasper, more Bella, and most of all, more love. Give it a shot – you’ll be glad you did!
