Official Description: “It should have scared me, but it didn’t. I shouldn’t have wanted it, but I did.” Dark and empty. Lonely and unfulfilled. Can two broken souls find connection in spite of their differences? E/B OOC Rated M because there will be sex and it will be hot.

I am a scaredy cat. I do not watch scary movies (due to the fact that The Exorcist scared the bejesus out of me ever since I was dumb enough to watch the whole thing), nor do I participate in séances or anything of the sort. The most I’ll do is dress up at Halloween and collect candy because who doesn’t like getting candy from strangers? So, when Cosmogirl7481 began posting her romance/supernatural fic, What Speaks in Darkness, I was afraid. Very afraid.
With white knuckles I began reading it and… I LOVED IT!
Spooky? Yes. Mysterious? Yes. Sexy as hell? Hell yes!!!
The prologue sets the stage for the air of mystery that surrounds the story, but the story really takes off in Chapter One: ‘It Never Works’, in which Bella, a lonely and hot, young bartender, rejects the advances of Jacob, her long-time friend. It’s a complicated, deep and very one-sided relationship:
He was soft and warm and generous and bright. He was my best friend and I knew that he wished that I was more.
But I just…wasn’t.
I couldn’t find it anywhere in me to feel like that for him. And the messed up thing…the truly fucked up thing was that I wanted to.
Bella is a wounded girl who suffers silently. She’s lost and looking for something to hold on to, to live for, and for answers:
His words causing my world to shift into a place that I didn’t want to be. A darker place. A place that I spent my nights ignoring and my days unconsciously avoiding.
What happened? What’s she avoiding? The details of Bella’s painful past have yet to be revealed and I’m dying to know!
Of course anyone who’s read Love In My Box, Cosmo’s team effort with the incredible Marvar29, knows that where there is Cosmo, there is funny. Cosmo expertly mixes the serious and scary with the funny in this new fic.
When Bella explains to Rose and Alice that their Halloween night activities will not involve penis, but rather an open mind, Rose responds with, “An open mind is never as good as an open pussy, Bella.” That’s one of the funniest lines I’ve ever read!
Bella reveals to her friends that she wants to play the Ouija board, to which Rose is sure it won’t work and Alice is as scared as I was! As they set up outside at night on the porch of Bella’s home (what were they thinking?), Rose and Alice discuss whom they might contact:
“Fine,” Rose said, looking at Alice. “Don’t be a pussy. This could be fun. Maybe we’ll talk to someone that’s dead and hot.”
I laughed as I gathered a couple of candles from the living room, deciding to also get the tapers from the dining room. I poured a glass of red wine as well to place on the table.
“Dead and hot,” Alice repeated. “You mean like James Dean or Clark Gable?”
“Well, I meant Heath Ledger or River Phoenix,” Rose snorted. “James Dean is hot, but everyone knows that Clark Gable had false teeth and bad breath.”
Brilliant!
Despite the funny, Bella reminds us that, Reality was far more frightening than any scary movie.
Really, what happened to Bella? Cosmo offers us a clue:
He loved this table.
Every scratch and knick and scuff reminded me of a time when he had filled my life…when my life had been much happier.
Who loved the table? What happened to change it all? Tell me!
As the three ladies begin ‘communing’ with the spirits, nothing happens until the planchette spells…B…O…O…
Laughter ensues over Rose’s prank and they try again, but as Rose predicts, nothing happens. Eventually, Rose and Alice head home while Bella remains on the porch regarding the Ouija board in the dim candlelight. She sits down and begins talking aloud to whatever, whomever might be out there listening. Then suddenly…
The wood beneath my fingers shifted.
Ahh! I know! I know! It moved! And all this happens in the first chapter alone!
I’m not sure how she managed it, but somehow Cosmogirl7481 turned my white knuckles into some lemony goosebumps in the matter of five chapters! That’s right, I said: lemony goodness!
Not only is this fic the perfect blend of spooky, funny and steamy, but what better time of year to read something that’ll send a shiver down your spine? What Speaks in Darkness is a delicious treat, and that ain’t no trick!
I can’t remember when it was that the lovely miss cosmogirl7481 contacted me and asked if I might want to read the Prologue for her new story, but I jumped at the chance. From the very beginning, she drew me in with her pretty words and the intriguing storyline she’s created with our favorite characters. It’s one of those beginnings that leaves you going what?!.
But it doesn’t stop there. quietruby did a pretty fuckawesome job of explaining the particulars. In just a few chapters there is intrigue, mystery, hilarity and some very yummy dreams… And I don’t want to give away too much and ruin what is sure to be a good surprise. Take my word for it, you should be reading this story.
Based on the prologue, I wasn’t sure what to expect from What Speaks in Darkness – it was a little bit on the abstract side, something that usually doesn’t attract me. By the end of the first chapter, though, I was interested. Bella, Rose and Alice using a Ouija board, you say? Yeah, I have a strange fascination with Ouija, even though it scares the bejeebus out of me, and I won’t so much as touch one after a freaky incident when I was eight.
This is an alternating point of view fic, switching back and forth between Edward and Bella. Some of the action is repeated in each POV. I find myself drawn more to Edward’s POV – it’s a little more mysterious. I particularly liked this passage in chapter three:
This was the test….this was the one question that she could have asked to ensure that this was actually happening.
My name.
Would it tell her my name?
Could I tell her my name?
Edward.
Edward.
Edward.
Edward.
I focused on my name, willing her to hear…to know.
And then I watched as the wood began to move.
It stopped and I heard her voice speak my name. And even though it was a question…I was obliterated by the truth that she knew.
So, uh, yeah… is Edward a spirit? Is Bella communicating with the undead? Well, yeah, in a manner of speaking.
Of the prologue and four regular chapters, two chapters are lemons so there hasn’t been a huge advancement of plot yet, but I’m looking forward to seeing where this one was going. I have some theories, and I like the use of the Ouija board… even though it ensures I’ll be sleeping with the lights on tonight.
I am not gonna lie here, this story has me a little mystified. The whole mystery behind Edward and exactly what is going on with him has me enthralled. I absolutely love the way this story is written. And that last chapter that is posted, as of right now,….Whew! *fans self*
“Tell me, Bella,” I murmured against her sensitive skin. “Tell me you want this.”
“I want this, Edward,” she said, her voice shaking. “I want this. I want you.”
I couldn’t feel the cool air of the night and yet my body trembled at her words.
“What do you want, Bella?” I asked her, spreading her legs. “Do you want my fingers? My mouth…my cock?”
I ran my hands along the inside of her milky thighs
“All of you,” she breathed. “Every part…every piece.”
Seriously, you definitely won’t regret starting this story.
I’m fail and haven’t had time to read this yet but just wanted to say that I love Cosmo’s writing and can’t wait to check this out!
