Young Pilgrims by ineedyoursway

Official Description:

Bella lives a life without passion. Passion is the only thing Edward has.

Read this story for the writing, if for no other reason at all (although there are many other reasons you should.)

The style is different and lovely, sure. The pacing is perfect and the characters intriguing—yeah, this story is all of that.

But read it for the writing.

ineedyoursway has this talent to take the mundane, every day doldrums of life…and turn it into poetry. Her words are average and realistic but somehow she strings them together so sharp and concise, that suddenly one line has cut you to the quick.

I read this story, and I know lonely. I see Edward through Bella’s eyes, and I can feel his humiliation, but I also know his pride…and it doesn’t take hundreds of words to get me there.
So far in this fic we have a story of two lonely people—on the surface. But what I came to know is we have a story about hope and desperation; love and possibility; an escape from outside the lines. It could be a story about nearly any of us.

The supporting characters are painted subtly and through Bella’s lonely, but willingly hopeful eyes, and we know them. We also know the character of Bella better through her friends; tiny bits of Alice just nestled in this story help to show us a Bella we wouldn’t know otherwise.

I’d use the characters of Jasper and Alice for example of how just a few lines help us to know supporting characters, but if you haven’t read this one yet, I think I can paint a clearer picture using the character of Angela:

“You’re late,” she says

Her seniority makes her an ass

Just like seniority makes everyone an ass

The thing is, she’s over 40

She’s been working in the café for just under 15 years

She once told me:

“I feel like I’m standing in a room with no doors. And, from the floor, rises coffee. It’s brown and thick, like mud in a rainforest. Eventually, I’m going to drown. Then, after I’m dead, I’m going to realize that I’ve spent my whole life here, making coffee for strangers.”

Angela also plays John Mayer C.D.’s relentlessly.

And just like that, we know she’s an ass. We also know she has her reasons. So far, there has been no villain, no wrong or right, just people living average lives.

That’s the thing about this very human story, it’s raw, sometimes painful, sometimes a struggle, sometimes there are unexpected bursts of excitement, sometimes it’s so sad and sometimes it’s humorous, just like life.

As far as the character of Edward, you’ll have to read to know his story, but I will say his character is the perfect metaphor for this entire story: gritty and real to the point where it’s painful, humiliating and quietly desperate, but underneath there is absolute beauty and grace.

Err, what can I possibly add to this rec? I mean, what more do you need to know besides the fact that jandco is telling you to read it? For the writing. She’s right. It’s amazing. It’s intriguing and mysterious. And hot. And heartwrenching. And beautiful. And you should read it. Right now.
