What We're Reading

Songster: So here I am in my pj’s in all my post Christmas glory and something pops into my inbox and knocks me right off my comfy sofa. Holy Long Time Coming Bat Man! OCDindeed just updated The Fallout. I love this story so freaking much. It’s one of two AU vamp fics that I would wait until the end of time for the completion. Beautifully written, strong characterizations. *sighs* What a fab Christmas present.

LJSummers: I was so pleased to see this had updated! Yes, a fabulous present indeed! :) The first part is just so ANGSTY and then…Wow! *swoon* Brilliant characterizations. I also treated myself with a re-read of one of my favorite human Edwards – Coincidental Major by m7707. Sweetest guy out there. I just adore the puck out of this hockey player.

Songster: Oh yes, it is angsty and we all know angst and me don’t get along so well, but then… yeah so worth the wait. Speaking of waiting for it, Firefly in Summer updated and it made me so happy. (I need to find a super happy gif here LOL).

Katinki: yes! i love that The Fallout is updating again! And lo and behold, Last Rites, too! :D It’s like Christmas… oh wait… ;)

LJSummers: For reals! My notifications are pinging away like mad! :)

Songster: I know, I had a second episode of falling off the sofa when I saw Last Rites show up. I have had mucho fun re-reading and catching up with Love in Idleness by plummy. So good. If I got to play in The Wood, I’m not sure I would come out.

Kassiah: I’m so thankful for all of these great fics. Know what else I’m thankful for? The beautiful and insanely hot mjinaspen (who incidentally writes one of my favorite stories evar) is joining us! She’s going to be doing a monthly column on fics from other fandoms. So, say ‘hi’ to MJ!

Also, I’ve been reading like it’s my job. Wait…it is my job. haha I have lots of fics and books to talk about, but I need to organize my thoughts a bit. I will say that I rediscovered Vines by FictionFreak95, and ohmygosh. I loved it so much! This is absolutely one of my favorite Edwards, and we’re rec’ing it this week!

Katinki: on a non fic note, i just started the Guardian Trilogy by Laury Falter. it’s quick to read and surprisingly good. it’s YA. it features angels, conversing with the dead, some decent UST, a rather attractive and mysterious young man with some awesome powers, and a pretty intriguing female lead. i’m rather enjoying it….. eta… okay, because clearly, I have no self control, i finished book one, lol. was quite happy with the outcome and can’t wait to start book 2. here’s my review on goodreads.

LJSummers: Read a Hunger Games o/s by the very talented giselle-lx, called A Gift for Self-Destruction. Written for a fic prompt meme at A Different Forest, it’s a very IC look inside Katniss’ head. I highly recommend it. Giselle has a gift for catching the flavor of a protagonist.

Caren:YAY! jayhawkbb updated No Holds Barred! I read this a few months ago on Kass’s rec and loved it, and this chapter was just as good. Ballerina and Barman are awesome. :)

Songster: I spent my day reading Holding Sam by MeeraNaamJoker. It’s a Sam/Bella pairing that is beautifully written and sizzling with heat and emotion. Even E/B shippers would like it. I swear :)

Totally agree with you, LJ. Giselle is one of my favorite writers, must go read this.

Caren:I don’t know about that, songster. :P

My girl belladonna1472 just posted her new story Off The Record, and let me tell you… it’s fantastic. I love this idea so much!!!

Katinki: @songster my inner exb is cringing so hard right now. lol i’m glad you do the non-canon and i get to play with the vamps. :D

Songster: LOL. I am really ExB. Kassiah talked me into this or arm-twisted me or hypnotized me or something. Did anyone catch the update for Breaking News by WriteOnTime? I just love these two characters and it’s complete.

Kassiah: I am pretty mesmerizing. haha

LJSummers: ForksPixie updated Visions of Our Destiny (Jasper/Bella) after a bit of a hiatus. I am going to be re-reading the whole thing to refresh my happy memory. In this story, Jasper’s been waiting for his mate – seen in a vision by Alice – for 60 years. His involvement with her even before he meets her is just adorable. MsK’s The Trip Home 2 (How about And Baby Makes Four? Can we call it that or is that too spoilery?) updated and it’s so SWEET. :)

Kassiah: I just finished reading Shatter Me, and I liked it, even though I might be team Warner *ahem*. I also read Carano’s A Drink with the Girls and A Beer with the Guys, and aside from the fact that it’s two stories in one, I like it. Them. Whatever. It’s totally totally hot!

Also, Dirt Roads ended. Which…I haven’t read the end. You know me and never wanting stuff to end! But I’m sure it’s awesome! haha

Katinki: i also wanted to recommend a one shot for any interested in a good tear jerker. it’s called Seraphim by Anna Faze. It’s truly beautiful, but… yeah, it’s a little heartbreaking.

MsKathy: omg, I am so late to the partay here. Sorry. I feel like I’ve read so much lately, but my brain is fried. I really loved My World At Your Feet, even though (tmi?) I am totally not a foot fetishist. Don’t let the fetish aspect scare you away, it is really a beautiful piece between two hot dudes.

I am also way way behind on (but loving!) String Theory and Winter Song.

Totally had a snotsobby moment over Forgive Me Father and the angst and truth of feeling trapped and unable to love whom your heart yearns for.

If you’re in need of some vampslash, check out The Man You Make Me. GUH.

Songster: Speaking of… I am really taking a walk on the wild side this week by reading These Violent Delights by Magnolia822. Harry Potter/Twilight crossover starring Draco/Edward including some hot slashytimes between the wizard and the vamp. How’s that for a mishmash? Very good though.

Thanks to everyone who gives us support, sends in their recs, and just generally makes our lives in the fandom more entertaining. We couldn’t do this without all of you.
See you next week!!

Immunity by belladonna1472

Official Description:

In a post-pandemic world, misery and paranoia are strife. When immunologist Jacob Black is sent to a refugee settlement, he encounters a young woman named Rosalie Hale. Does she have what he’s looking for? A Jake/Rose story in 3 parts. AH, set in 2051.

Word Count: 19,980

Although the pairing is slowly gaining a little traction in Twifandom, many people’s first reaction to Rosalie/Jacob is basically, huh? And indeed, in canon or AU, that reaction’s pretty valid. However, take the canon attributes of the two and move them to an all-human setting, and you’ll see that in fact they have quite a bit in common with each other. The love for cars, the belief that life is a prize not to be easily relinquished, the fierce drive to protect those they love – Rosalie and Jacob could be made for each other.

In “Immunity,” an AU/AH story, belladonna1472 has taken the pair and put them into very extreme circumstances. Forty years in the future, Jacob is an immunologist sent to a refugee settlement to conduct some research for his boss, Carlisle Cullen. While there, he encounters Rosalie Hale in the chaotic, untended library. She almost immediately accosts him with the disparity of their situations:

I answered her as calmly as possible, still trying to avoid the true purpose of my visit. “It would cost millions of pounds to set up a full power grid here. At least there are generators. Better than nothing.”

“Yeah, solar technology works really well in this atmosphere,” she replied sarcastically, looking upward at the skylight.

“Better than windmills.”

Defending the state of the settlement was a tough position to take. I had only been here two days and already I longed for the mainland. This place was depression. Rows and rows of basic housing, most without reliable water supply or insulation; fields that were yellowed from pesticide abuse and erosion; dirt roads for the peacekeepers to drive across; and a run down seaport for the delivery of supplies. No wonder most people stayed indoors. There was nothing to see but gray and yellow.

Jacob’s been granted naturalized status in the U.K. due to his Native American heritage, even after the pandemic decimated the world and led to the U.S. losing its power and influence. Despite her initial hostility, Rosalie’s quick to see an advantage in cultivating Jacob: she wants him to marry her and take her away from the settlement. He, however, knows things about the pandemic that she can’t, and that knowledge, along with a natural hesitancy to get involved with the fierce refugee girl who won’t take no for an answer, complicates his response.

Belladonna1472 has done a wonderful job – in just three chapters – of portraying a ravaged world and its population. While the circumstances of Jacob and Rosalie’s story are as far from canon as can be, their inherent personality traits remain intact and fantastically well-suited for each other. The two spark together, and the twists and turns of their mutual attraction, propelled by self-interest though it is at the beginning, provide the heart of a wonderful science fiction read.

I am one of the ones who like the JacobxRosalie pairing, so I was really happy to see this story by one of my favorite authors. Immunity is different, and it’s a quick read. There’s no Edward and Bella here, and even though it’s set during a pandemic, it’s not super angsty. Plus, it’s hot:

“I’m going to make love to you now,” I told her, unbuttoning my shirt. “Lie down, will you?”

She was surprised. “But we’re outside.”

“Doesn’t bother me. Does it bother you?”

“In the scheme of things, no. Life’s too short, even with immunity.”

Check it out :)

The Cullen Campaign by belladonna1472

Official Description: Edward Cullen and Isabella Swan both have parents who are powerful on Capitol Hill. Problem is, their families are political enemies. What happens when Democrat!Edward and Republican!Bella bump into each other at Union Station in D.C.?
Word Count: 73,574

Casting My Vote for The Cullen Campaign

My friends, I stand before you today with a troubled heart. I see so many of you struggling, and it touches me, and it saddens me, and it makes me so angry. I know many of you stay up all night, enduring hours of painful fic-dives, foregoing food and the comfort of your loved ones in order to discover and savor something – ANYTHING – worth reading beyond the first paragraph or two. The current dearth of enjoyable Twific makes some of you want to give up the struggle altogether. I see you eying other fandoms, thinking that maybe the time has come to jump ship and start a new life with the kids from “Glee”, or to revisit the optimism of your youth with a bit of Hermione/Draco nostalgia.

I’m here to tell you that you must not abandon hope: for where there is endless BDSM and tattooed angst, there can also be found those few shining, pure examples of well-written smartfic full of heat, and humor, and growing attraction involving the brain, which as we all know is the trickiest erogenous zone the human body boasts. Join “The Cullen Campaign”, and let the world of Twific know that you’re ready for a change.

Meet Edward Cullen, scion of the house of Cullen, one of this nation’s most prominent Democratic families. His father is President Banner’s Chief of Staff; his mother is the new Speaker of the House. Edward does his duty and appears with them when he’s needed, but really, he’s quite happy living in San Francisco, and prefers writing about politics to actually living them. Meet Bella Swan, Yale law student and only daughter of Republican Senator Charles Swan of the great state of Pennsylvania. Bella’s conservative politics are secretly a bit to the left of her father’s, but she’s Republican through-and-through, and damned proud of it, as well.

Edward and Bella have known each other for years, but it’s not until Edward’s slightly-psychic sister Alice demands that he take an Amtrak train from DC to Boston one day that Edward and Bella make the kind of connection you don’t often see on a commuter rail. Their parents will kill them if they find out. THERE WILL BE SCANDAL OMG. These two believe that they’re diametrically-opposed whenever they’re not horizontally-situated, but the horizontal (and vertical, and variations of these angles) is so good that they embark on a – what? – an opposition-with-benefits arrangement? Yeah, wish them luck, because they’re made for each other whether they like it or not.

The whole thing’s quotable – here are some favorites:

“Pretty please with a Republican on top.”

“Dear United States Congress: You’re cock-blocking me.”

“I await your subpoena. And any other way you wish to serve me.”

“You’re the best secret lover ever.”

This story treats you like a grown-up. It’s hot, smart, and funny as hell. I’m such a believer that belladonna1472′s named me Campaign Press Secretary. A vote for The Cullen Campaign is a vote for intelligent storytelling. Read it, or the tattooed terrorists win.

There is nothing I love more than a story like this one. It’s intelligent, witty, sexy and just all around wonderful. Not even kidding when I say I want to put belladonna1472 in my pocket and keep her for writing this story. It encompasses the meaning of ‘wanting what you can’t have’ in all of the best ways possible.

Edward and Bella’s families represent two very different sides of the political scope in the country. We all know the lines drawn between Republican’s and Democrat’s are pretty clear in real life. If you’re someone who follows politics, you’ll understand why this is such a big deal. And even if you’re not into politics, don’t let that stop you from reading because it doesn’t distract from the actual storyline, it only adds to it. The conflict that exists between these two characters is new, and fresh and original.

Despite their differences and their obvious need to stay clear of one another, these two still find themselves drawn toward one another after an unexpected meeting on a train.

The banter and inner monologue of these characters is some of the best I have ever read, and like WriteOnTime said, there are a whole lot of places in this story that are quotable. Let me share some of my favorites with you…

From Chapter 2 (BPOV):

The tapping continues. I try to stare him down, but he just grins at me, and slowly I feel a smile tugging on my own lips.

“Stop,” I demand, trying to stay mad, but I know that the tone of my voice doesn’t match the command of my words.

He pouts, acting hurt. “I’m not used to hearing that word from women.”

Oh, he’s flirting with me. He’s definitely flirting with me.

I clear my throat and shoot him a look that says you-know-that-our-families-are-enemies. I need this to stop, because it’s stupid to get my hopes up. I can’t pursue him.

“Stop trying to push my buttons,” I warn him.

“Can I undo them instead?”

From Chapter 3: (EPOV)

Now, Cullen,” she repeats. “I want it now.”

I’m all too happy to cooperate. I lick my lips in anticipation and nuzzle her neck while I answer.

“Yes, ma’am.”

Taking orders from a Republican.

There’s a first time for everything.

From Chapter 4: (BPOV)

“What’s it like to let a Democrat fuck you?” he taunts.

“You mean, what’s it like to let a Democrat service me?” I shoot back.

I could literally continue quoting all day long. But… I’ll stop and just say this: go read the story! I promise you won’t be disappointed, because what these two think is a one-time experience on a train is undoubtedly destined to turn into something much more. You’ll be missing out if you’re not along for the ride!

It’s not very often that I run across a fic that quickly grabs my attention the way The Cullen Campaign did. It’s funny, well written, and unbelievably hot.

belladonna1472 has created one hell of an Edward and Bella duo. They are both strong and independent, and in my opinion , just exactly what the other needs. Not to mention, freaking hilarious.

Dear United States Congress,

You’re cock-blocking me.

Don’t make me come down to D.C. to force you to get out of my way.

It would be embarrassing for the both of us.

Not to mention, the nation.

Kind regards,

Isabella Swan

The lemons are steamy, but it’s the inner dialogue and banter between these two that keeps me coming back for more.

Don’t do it, Bella.

Those green eyes are evil.

If you see them, you’ll die.

Die…and go to heaven.

If you haven’t read it yet, get on it. This is one story you don’t want to miss.
