Has this ever happened to you? It seems like no matter where you go, twitter, twific websites, live journal forums, you see everybody talking about the same fic. You think, sure, I’m intrigued, but my to-be-read list is already too long and the last thing I need to do is to add another one. Then, months later, when you’re in search of something new to catch your attention, you stumble on that fic again and decide to give it a try. And then you can’t stop reading for three days. The thing is, it’s complete, or nearly so. You desperately want to talk to someone about each fantastic new chapter you read. You want to pick the brains of fellow readers for clues and try to discern what’s going on. And everyone else has already read it.
Yeah, we’ve all been here.
So do yourself a favor and jump on board right now with Of Kith and Kin by chicklette. This one is only three chapters in and I just know it’s going to be one of those fics.
Chicklette’s keeping it vague at the start. This is the summary: “’The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love, and be loved in return.’ -Nat King Cole. This story is about that. AH, Canon pairings.”.
After three chapters, I have more questions than answers. We’re thrown right into the middle of some high drama, Cullen style. Alice is in the hospital and we don’t know why. Bella’s pregnant, and we don’t know whose baby it is or what her situation is. Oh, and Edward seems to hate her guts. We’re given a tantalizing flash to the past in the next chapter, just enough for us to know that it wasn’t always that way with Edward and Bella- maybe. We can’t even be sure that it’s them getting all hot and grabby. It all makes me want to know more…right now! I’m telling you, I jump at every update, desperate to unravel what’s sure to be the fascinating back story of these characters. And knowing chicklette and her amazing writing, I’m sure we won’t be disappointed.
Jump in now and join in the speculation. There’s still a lot of story for her to tell and I’m so excited to be along for the ride!
Everyone is constantly on the search for good fic – the kind with characters who aren’t flat and plots that aren’t completely predictable. We want to see the canon pairings together, maybe with a few bumps along the way, and we like some high quality romance thrown in, too. (Don’t lie. Even if a story isn’t lemony, we all enjoy the love.)
But I digress. My point is that great stories can be hard to find. That’s why, when something fresh and original comes along, it really sweeps us (or at least me) off our feet.
Enter Chicklette with her newest story, Of Kith and Kin. What has always drawn me to Chicklette’s writing is her ability to drop you into the middle of a story that already has so much history and get you salivating for more right from the start. My initial reaction to this fic was something along the lines of, “WTF is going on here??? As you’ve seen above, the circumstances are complicated and confusing. But they possess a hook – one aspect of Chicklette’s intriguing style – that keep you reading, desperate to discover the truth.
Honestly, you may be a little confused when you begin read. Don’t worry, little fictionees, that’s the way it’s meant to be. Why do men like a strip tease? Because they get to see something enticing…flashes of more desirable spots…the whole package is hidden until the end… We love to be teased and toyed with, and Of Kith and Kin definitely has that down. You’ll want more. You’ll feel frustrated. You won’t be sure whether you should love or hate Edward…or Bella…or anyone, for that matter. Regardless, you’ll be all in, begging sweet Chicklette to update and give us some answers!
Every once in awhile, I come across a story that I know will kill me, but I just can’t stop reading it. Chicklette’s Of Kith and Kin is gonna be one of those stories.
The way she describes everything is amazing and weaves a tale that is so intriguing and mysterious, I found myself rereading the three chapters that are up a few times. I love how she doesn’t give us the whole background to the story right from the beginning–rather, we experience and process the clues as Bella does. Like Spanglemaker and Dulci said, we don’t really know what’s going on. What we do know is that life hasn’t been all sunshine and rainbows for all of the characters involved, but they still are family.
The way Chicklette writes is so descriptive, we feel and see and experience.
Looking at him, I reached my hand up to cup his face, trying to wipe away the wrinkles at the corner of his eyes. He’s only two years older than me, not even thirty. He looked forty in that moment, grief and pain etching his face into a mask that all but obscured the man that I’d grown up with.
Searching his eyes with mine, I tried to find answers. He shrugged, but didn’t drop my hand. So lost, he looked so lost. And weary. I squeezed his hand, then left him to give Ali a kiss on the cheek.
She was too pale. Her lips were chapped, and a bag of clear liquid dripped into a tube that ran down into her hand. In the silence, the machinery clicked and whirred and beeped. I stared at the monitors, not knowing what to look for, wishing for absolution from whatever it was that held her in its thrall.
We sat together for a while, Jasper holding my hand, holding her hand, Esme stroking Alice’s hair. We were a constellation, revolving around her. Carlisle entered and studied the monitors, picking up her chart. I stood and went to him, folding myself into his arms, breathing in the scent that belonged mostly to him but a little bit to Edward too, some innate body chemistry riding on the Y set of chromosomes of the Cullen men. Like Esme’s eyes, it pierced me a little that day, fresh off seeing Edward.
There was a time when it was difficult to be so close to Carlisle, to look Esme in the eye. But that passed, and it had been a very long time since taking a breath full of family brought me anything other than comfort.
I can’t wait to find out what’s going to happen in this story, and hope that all of you will give this story (and this amazing writer) a chance.
