I Just Have to Ask by EchoesOfTwilight

Official Description: Jasper uses his music to cope with the pain of unrequited love, hinting in song at how he feels about his bass player. When the time comes to say it more clearly, can he? M for lemons/language. AH.

It’s pretty much no secret that I have a huge crush on EchoesOfTwilight and everything she writes. She continues to amaze me with the talents she possesses, and this one-shot was (of course) unsurprisingly fantastic.

All of us who are writers know that slash in particular is somewhat frightening if it’s not something you normally do. For a first timer to take a chance and attempt something like this, and then for it to end up winning the public vote in the Slash Backslash 2.0 contest… is awesome. This is exactly the reason these contests are so fantastic, sometimes it brings new authors out of the woodworks or showcases talents some authors have that aren’t always visible.

I was lucky enough to pre-read this early and then I had to sit on my hands for several weeks waiting until I could post it here, for those who haven’t ALREADY read it, to see!

I Just Have to Ask is an angsty ball of unrequited love and heartache that will take you on twists and turns through Jasper’s eyes, while he suffers and eventually tries to turn off his feelings for his bass player and longtime friend, Edward.

“You sounded fucking awesome,” Edward offers, the first words he’s spoken to only me since calling my name in the wings of a stage that has already faded into the night behind us.“I felt good,” I say, and it’s true. The catharsis of releasing even a fraction of what I feel is blissful; for a few hours I can open a valve and set free scalding love, preventing my own implosion. Ignoring my glass, I grab the bottle, taking a long pull before tipping it toward him. “And my rhythm section kept me on track.”

Here, where I have to speak in voice, not in song, this is the closest I can come to telling him the truth: that his presence keeps me grounded, centered, sure of who I am and what my place is.

Edward laughs, shrugging. “It’s what I do.” He takes the bottle, and I am mesmerized by the way his tongue lingers on the smooth glass rim, still warm from my lips. A low hum reaches out, gripping my desire for him in its fists of sound.

The pretty pretty words, the characters, even the music, everything about this story will pull you in and make you want more.

Edward tastes of tequila and sweat, as sharp as his mouth is soft, rough stubble and sliding tongue taking over my senses. I kiss him fiercely, an anchor that keeps my shaking body from flying apart. The confused roar of the crowd is white noise, the blinding lights and suffocating heat welcome as within them, I am given the final piece of myself.I follow when he tries to break the kiss, unwilling to let go, to awake from this moment of madness to find myself alone in cold, tangled sheets. He touches his tongue to mine and I moan with the little breath that remains in my scorched lungs, finally pulling away to gasp for air.

Instantly, his lips are at my ear, teasing my skin with feathers of promise. “Let’s find somewhere to be…alone,” he says, blood rising to my surface as I realize we’ve literally had an audience to our intimacy.

I could literally quote the whole thing to you, there is no part that isn’t fantastic. But I’ll leave you with my favorite part…

Like that?

Just like that.

Now what are you waiting for? Go read! If you’ve already read it, READ IT AGAIN! And then leave EchoesOfTwilight some love!

All the Ingredients for a Good Day by EchoesOfTwilight

Official Description: Bella’s having a terrible day, until a series of clues lead her to something she didn’t know she was looking for. AH. Pure, cavity-inducing fluff. Overall First Place winner of the FML Judges Vote & Naelany’s judge’s pick.
Word Count: 6,729

While perusing through the entries for the FML Contest, I came across this little gem. It’s no secret that I love EchoesofTwilight and everything she writes, but this is so sweet and delicious, it’s definitely one of my favorite one-shots.

The story starts off with Bella at her coffee-shop job, stomping around and being generally unhappy that no one–not even her parents remembered her birthday. Around 6pm, she finally gets a call from her brother, Emmett, only to realize he’s only calling to ask for money. She storms out into the Seattle chill. While waiting for her apartment building elevator, she runs into Mr. 4D, the relatively-new fuckhot green-eyed neighbor. He asks her why she’s so glum, and she explains:

“Do you ever watch 24?” I asked abruptly.

“Um. Yes?” He was clearly confused by the question.

Stay with me here; I have a point. I promise.

“Okay. Remember how during the first few seasons – aside from wanting to punch Kim in the face for existing, because her brand of stupidity is usually eliminated from the gene pool by natural selection – it was really believable, and you felt bad for Jack? But now we’re on season eight, and it’s all getting a bit ridiculous and you wonder just how many bad days one guy can reasonably have?”

4D laughed, running a hand through messy hair that looked bronze in the flickery yellow light of the elevator. “Yeah, I know what you mean.”

“I’m having a season six day,” I said. “Not quite at the height of ludicrousness, but still an I can’t believe this shit actually happens kind of day. I was late for class, then late for work, then my brother called to ask me if he could borrow money. I talked to people all freaking day, and not one of them – even the one I’m related to – remembered that today’s my birthday. Sure, I get that one day I will want to pretend it’s just another day, but I didn’t really count on other people making that decision for me at the ripe old age of twenty-two.”

She goes into her apartment, drowning her sorrows in Half Baked and wine, when she hears a knock at her door. Opening it and finding nothing but a crinkled note and an ice-cold carton of milk, she begins on a treasure-hunting adventure that is sweet and “cavity-inducing” and ohsogood as she follows the clues that direct her to new locations and new incredients each time. I’m not even gonna lie. I actually, literally squealed when I read the last clue. It’s that cute.

Not only is the plot great, but I really love how much characterization and back-story EchoesofTwilight was able to inject into this one-shot. Bella is snarky and real, and Edward is sweet and authentic.

An internal argument that was less debate and more epic battle began inside my head at the realization. My solitary boyfriend experience had left me hurt and a little unwilling to try again, but if the way my craptastic day had turned great was teaching me anything, it was that sometimes it only takes one special person to make a huge difference. And there was no doubt that Edward was special – what kind of guy puts something like this together at the last minute?

“Dessert?” Edward asked, breaking into my thoughts.

Can I have you?

Having an FML kinda day and need a little pick-me-up? Check.
Looking for something fluffy and fun? Check.
Great plot? Realistic banter? Crazy old bat lady and Edward licking the batter off a beater? Check, Check, and Double fucking Check.
Sounds like this fic has all the ingredients for a Great one-shot. Definitely take a chance with this one, you won’t be disappointed.

Behind the Clouds by EchoesOfTwilight

Official Description: When it’s time for the Cullen vampire clan to leave their home in Chicago, an old vision of Alice’s dictates their next move. Six years earlier, Edward Masen had been a patient of Carlisle’s: young, innocent, broken, and blissfully unaware of the destiny Alice had seen for him.

Now living in Forks, Edward is haunted, depressed, and consumed by unrequited love. A mysterious note turns up in the pages of a book given to him on the worst day of his life, leaving him more confused than ever about his place in the world. When the meaning of the message becomes clear in a single terrifying instant, Edward must make a painful choice in order to secure not only his own fate, but also the lives of the people he can’t exist without.

araeo says: When MF’er asked me to do this guest rec, I jumped at the chance.  Of course, I think that was back before Christmas…and it’s just now happening.  What can I say? Anyone who knows me even a little bit is aware that I’m a master procrastinator.

I first met my wifey, Echoes, when she stalked me on the forums at Twilighted.  And we all know how much most of us like being stalked, considering our obsession with a certain sparkly, brooding, vegetarian vampire stalker.  She wooed me with Robporn and sweet compliments, and then…then, some other little birdies told me that this lovely lady was starting her first fic.  Of course, I had to read.

And I was…blown. Away.

Echoes has a way with words that makes me feel like I’m seeing everything unfold from the eyes of the character.  Her Carlisle is so true to canon, yet the depth she gives him goes way beyond what we learned in the original books.  We feel the love he has for his family, his desire to be a supportive, wise leader, and the way his affection for Edward grows in the first few chapters is extremely well done.

Edward never spoke to either of us about his parents, preferring instead to talk about the boy he had been until the instant before a screech of tires had altered him more thoroughly than my venom ever could.  …  Every moment I fought against the feeling that Alice was right, fought against my connection to him.

This occurs in the very beginning, when Edward comes to Carlisle as a broken, devastated ten year-old who has just lost his parents.  Carlisle struggles with the knowledge that this boy will one day be his son, reluctant to change him, but he still can’t deny the connection.  It’s just one of the little nuances Echoes so easily slips into the story, and I enjoy it all the more for its many subtleties.

Carlisle was the first character that sucked me in, and if you know me at all, that’s a rarity – I’m all about Edward.  All the time.

And this brings me to…

Hugward. *sigh*

If you don’t want to give him a hug within the first two paragraphs of meeting him, you must be a sociopath.  In fact, you might be worse.  I consider myself mildly sociopathic, but this Edward has my heart and he squeezes the shit out of it.  (I can say that, right, Caren?)  I want to bake him chocolate cake and snuggle with him (all before I molest him, of course).

This boy makes my heart hurt, but it’s in such a sweet way that I don’t mind.  He’s been alone in life after the death of his parents; although he was taken in by his aunt, he still feels like he should hold himself back from her for fear that his love will end up hurting her.  Again, I just want to hug him.  Have I mentioned that yet??  My love for this character can only be expressed in a monologue from the magnificent Elmyra, of Tiny Toons fame:  “I wanna hug him and squeeze him and love him and call him George (er, Hugward)!

The love he feels for Bella is palpable, but the anguish he’s experienced in his life wrecks me.  His traits are wonderfully canon, and Echoes captures his self-loathing and desire to punish himself for something that was never his fault magnificently.

We fell into a pattern of easy pleasantries, which was in itself surprising because I hadn’t felt at ease around anyone in years.  Still it wasn’t enough, but what more could I expect?  It was better to have that small part of Bella than nothing at all, so I was grateful…and selfish, so very selfish.

More Hugward deliciousness that hurts so well…

The hours spent at our lab table became the best and worst of my life, and they were quickly running out.  Time was carelessly tossing away the seconds as if they meant nothing.  I hated time.

I’d had five months, but now ten days, ten hours, was all I had left with her before school broke up for the summer…

…I would watch from afar, wishing desperately that I was next to her, earning her perfect smiles.

I would take what I could get.  It was more than I deserved anyway.

I could go on for pages about Hugward, but I don’t want to give away the whole story.  This brings me to Bella.

Bella is just as hopelessly in love with Edward as he is with her, but while Edward is too mired in his self-loathing and undeserving attitude, Bella is afraid of ruining her friendship with him due to her romantic feelings.  Echoes’ characterization of a teenage girl pining after her best friend is spot-on.  Bella also knows that Edward isn’t yet in the right mind frame for a romantic relationship, so she contents herself with being his friend.  In this way, she helps him to break out of his shell, and they slowly become more than friends.  It’s quite possibly one of the sweetest relationship developments I’ve read in fic, or even fiction, to be honest.

Bella’s devotion to Edward, even when she can only be his friend, is amazing.  When kids at school make nasty comments about him while he’s mourning his aunt’s death, she comes to his defense immediately:

“Why do you care so much, anyway?” he asked me, his face painted with something that looked awfully like jealousy.

“Because someone should, Mike.  Because Edward is nothing like the way people at this school see him.  Do you think I don’t hear the things people say?  Do you think he doesn’t hear the rumors you spread that he cheats, because his grades are so good, or that he must be gay – not that it would matter – just because he’s turned every girl at this school down?  Do you think he enjoys having his parents whispered about, reminding him of what he’s lost?  You know, Mike, for your sake I hope you never have to deal with losing your parents, moving to a strange place, and then being forced to endure idiots like you.”

… I loved him; defending him was the least I could do.

“Nobody deserves to think that they aren’t cared about.  Especially not him.  And especially not now.”

I could go on and on, but I want you to read the story.  It’s beautifully written, engrossing and is filled with unique plot points that will keep you guessing.  It’s my favorite AU, and I’ve read a metric fucktonne of fic.  But you don’t have to take my word for it.  Check it out for yourself.  Yeah, I stole that from Levar Burton – Reading Rainbow FTW!

MF’er says:  Just like araeo, I’ve struggled with writing this recommendation for weeks, seriously, and it’s not because I had any doubt about how much I want you all to read it—trust me. It’s because every time I sit down to try and communicate why I think you should be reading it, everything I type sounds like garbage.

The truth is, there isn’t anything I could say that would properly describe how much I love the story that EchoesOfTwilight has crafted, so I’ll try a different approach.

Everyone strives to find that story with an original plot, something you’ve never read before, right? I know that’s something I look for. If there is a story that seems like it’s going to repeat the same boring things over and over again, I won’t start reading it because it certainly won’t hold its weight in my ‘easily distracted by sparkles’ brain.

So when I set out to start reading Behind The Clouds, I first read the summary and was so intrigued by the premise that I jumped right in, and I have to tell you I found everything I’ve always asked for in a story all wrapped up in a gorgeous package:

Original plot.  Real, believable characters you can identify and fall in love with.  Excellent writing, with alternating POV’s that do not repeat the same scenes over and over and are so closely canon, but better, that you’re left astonished.

The chapters are written with such beautiful imagery and emotion, when you add in the mixture of canon quotes and personalities that go above and beyond the norm, there really is nothing better. When coupled with her (sometimes evil) twists and surprises, it will keep you coming back for more over and over again.  You’ll find yourself cheering for Edward and Bella and their future. You’ll also find yourself nervous when they’re nervous, scared when they’re scared and feeling everything that they’re going through.

This isn’t a story that’s just being told to you, it’s a story you’re being shown through her powerful writing, you will truly get lost in the chapters and come out wishing that this was what Stephenie Meyer could have given us.

Innocence Is Dripping Red by EchoesOfTwilight

Innocence Is Dripping Red by EchoesOfTwilight

Word Count: 9,277

Official Description: Darkward contest entry: A bored and jaded Edward has his own way of spicing up his lonely existence. Rated M for graphic lemons and language. Not for the faint of heart – you have been warned.

MF’er says: Where do I even begin? A few months ago, during one of the WC’s I was participating in, we all took our turns after the round was finished with giving teasers. I was lucky enough that night to have gotten my first ‘taste’ of EchoesOfTwilight‘s Darkward.

After reading that teaser, even without knowing the premise of the rest of the one-shot, I couldn’t wait to see the rest of what she was working on. Until the night she posted it, I had absolutely no idea what the concept would be, but when she took a few minutes to explain what I could expect, that just made me even more anxious to read it. EchoesOfTwilight has created a scenario in which Edward is so unfulfilled with his existence that he can no longer find pleasure in anything. He’s found a very creative way to reignite the passion within him, hence the nickname: Voyeurward.

The truth was I was bored, and forced to borrow the passions of others because I could muster none of my own.

I moved amongst the crowd, letting their thoughts fill my mind as the cloud of smoke and sex and human flooded my senses. Yes. This was what I needed to build my excitement, so that when I took down some poor excuse for a human on the rain-dampened streets later, I would have these adopted memories of carnal pleasure to drive my bloodlust.

Bloodlust. It’s like any other desire, really. Consuming, delicious, passionate…and dissatisfying if exercised with the wrong victim.

For a vampire, it is all connected. Blood and sex, want and need. I had only ever sampled the first course. Dinner, without dessert.

It’s during one of his nights spent in search of some excitement that he first encounters Bella and is stricken with need he’s never experienced before.

It was so very different, picturing myself with someone instead of simply eavesdropping on an encounter. So much more primal…and infinitely more satisfying.

Bella’s lips on mine…her hands on my skin…my hands gliding over the mounds of her breasts, down the soft skin of her stomach…touching her, then licking my fingers to taste a liquid sweeter than blood…

EchoesOfTwilight has such an excellent way with words and manages to throw in canon quotes at the least expected times. Everything is woven together perfectly and leaves you wanting more (trust me, I’ve been begging for more since she posted).

“Want…you…so much…never before…” I breathed between kisses, my mind spinning with the feeling of them.

My first kiss.

That quote just… Rawr. Killed me. And beyond that? Oh yeah… he growls. GROWLS. But, I don’t want to give away too much because there is just so much brilliance here. Let me finish by saying that this one-shot will pull hard at your panty strings and leave you begging for more (just like me and so many others)… If you don’t take the time to read it and leave her some love, you’re missing out on a truly wonderful piece.
