What We're Reading

Songster: So here I am in my pj’s in all my post Christmas glory and something pops into my inbox and knocks me right off my comfy sofa. Holy Long Time Coming Bat Man! OCDindeed just updated The Fallout. I love this story so freaking much. It’s one of two AU vamp fics that I would wait until the end of time for the completion. Beautifully written, strong characterizations. *sighs* What a fab Christmas present.

LJSummers: I was so pleased to see this had updated! Yes, a fabulous present indeed! :) The first part is just so ANGSTY and then…Wow! *swoon* Brilliant characterizations. I also treated myself with a re-read of one of my favorite human Edwards – Coincidental Major by m7707. Sweetest guy out there. I just adore the puck out of this hockey player.

Songster: Oh yes, it is angsty and we all know angst and me don’t get along so well, but then… yeah so worth the wait. Speaking of waiting for it, Firefly in Summer updated and it made me so happy. (I need to find a super happy gif here LOL).

Katinki: yes! i love that The Fallout is updating again! And lo and behold, Last Rites, too! :D It’s like Christmas… oh wait… ;)

LJSummers: For reals! My notifications are pinging away like mad! :)

Songster: I know, I had a second episode of falling off the sofa when I saw Last Rites show up. I have had mucho fun re-reading and catching up with Love in Idleness by plummy. So good. If I got to play in The Wood, I’m not sure I would come out.

Kassiah: I’m so thankful for all of these great fics. Know what else I’m thankful for? The beautiful and insanely hot mjinaspen (who incidentally writes one of my favorite stories evar) is joining us! She’s going to be doing a monthly column on fics from other fandoms. So, say ‘hi’ to MJ!

Also, I’ve been reading like it’s my job. Wait…it is my job. haha I have lots of fics and books to talk about, but I need to organize my thoughts a bit. I will say that I rediscovered Vines by FictionFreak95, and ohmygosh. I loved it so much! This is absolutely one of my favorite Edwards, and we’re rec’ing it this week!

Katinki: on a non fic note, i just started the Guardian Trilogy by Laury Falter. it’s quick to read and surprisingly good. it’s YA. it features angels, conversing with the dead, some decent UST, a rather attractive and mysterious young man with some awesome powers, and a pretty intriguing female lead. i’m rather enjoying it….. eta… okay, because clearly, I have no self control, i finished book one, lol. was quite happy with the outcome and can’t wait to start book 2. here’s my review on goodreads.

LJSummers: Read a Hunger Games o/s by the very talented giselle-lx, called A Gift for Self-Destruction. Written for a fic prompt meme at A Different Forest, it’s a very IC look inside Katniss’ head. I highly recommend it. Giselle has a gift for catching the flavor of a protagonist.

Caren:YAY! jayhawkbb updated No Holds Barred! I read this a few months ago on Kass’s rec and loved it, and this chapter was just as good. Ballerina and Barman are awesome. :)

Songster: I spent my day reading Holding Sam by MeeraNaamJoker. It’s a Sam/Bella pairing that is beautifully written and sizzling with heat and emotion. Even E/B shippers would like it. I swear :)

Totally agree with you, LJ. Giselle is one of my favorite writers, must go read this.

Caren:I don’t know about that, songster. :P

My girl belladonna1472 just posted her new story Off The Record, and let me tell you… it’s fantastic. I love this idea so much!!!

Katinki: @songster my inner exb is cringing so hard right now. lol i’m glad you do the non-canon and i get to play with the vamps. :D

Songster: LOL. I am really ExB. Kassiah talked me into this or arm-twisted me or hypnotized me or something. Did anyone catch the update for Breaking News by WriteOnTime? I just love these two characters and it’s complete.

Kassiah: I am pretty mesmerizing. haha

LJSummers: ForksPixie updated Visions of Our Destiny (Jasper/Bella) after a bit of a hiatus. I am going to be re-reading the whole thing to refresh my happy memory. In this story, Jasper’s been waiting for his mate – seen in a vision by Alice – for 60 years. His involvement with her even before he meets her is just adorable. MsK’s The Trip Home 2 (How about And Baby Makes Four? Can we call it that or is that too spoilery?) updated and it’s so SWEET. :)

Kassiah: I just finished reading Shatter Me, and I liked it, even though I might be team Warner *ahem*. I also read Carano’s A Drink with the Girls and A Beer with the Guys, and aside from the fact that it’s two stories in one, I like it. Them. Whatever. It’s totally totally hot!

Also, Dirt Roads ended. Which…I haven’t read the end. You know me and never wanting stuff to end! But I’m sure it’s awesome! haha

Katinki: i also wanted to recommend a one shot for any interested in a good tear jerker. it’s called Seraphim by Anna Faze. It’s truly beautiful, but… yeah, it’s a little heartbreaking.

MsKathy: omg, I am so late to the partay here. Sorry. I feel like I’ve read so much lately, but my brain is fried. I really loved My World At Your Feet, even though (tmi?) I am totally not a foot fetishist. Don’t let the fetish aspect scare you away, it is really a beautiful piece between two hot dudes.

I am also way way behind on (but loving!) String Theory and Winter Song.

Totally had a snotsobby moment over Forgive Me Father and the angst and truth of feeling trapped and unable to love whom your heart yearns for.

If you’re in need of some vampslash, check out The Man You Make Me. GUH.

Songster: Speaking of… I am really taking a walk on the wild side this week by reading These Violent Delights by Magnolia822. Harry Potter/Twilight crossover starring Draco/Edward including some hot slashytimes between the wizard and the vamp. How’s that for a mishmash? Very good though.

Thanks to everyone who gives us support, sends in their recs, and just generally makes our lives in the fandom more entertaining. We couldn’t do this without all of you.
See you next week!!

Vines by FictionFreak95

Official Description:

After years of running away, Edward Cullen finds himself back at his family’s Napa Valley vineyard. What should have been a short trip & quick sell of an old run down crop turns into one of the hardest decisions he never thought he’d have to make. AH, BxE

When I was approached to write a review for Vines, I jumped at the chance. It has been on my TBR list since forever and over the holidays I decided to attack my list with a vengeance. My advice to you is don’t put this fic off any longer—just dive right in today.

Why should you read Vines by FictionFreak95 when there are so many fics out there battling for your attention?

Because…it’s got everything you want in a great ExB read, and each chapter just makes you want to click next regardless of how late it’s getting!

FictionFreak95 has written the perfect tale, IMO. I’m not a great fan of fics starting off with a prologue. I think the some authors give too much away, but FictionFreak95 had me addicted right from those first 1200 words.

So many times stories start off strong and then fade to black—not Vines. Each chapter adds to the previous one, weaving an amazing tale. So many questions get answered, but suddenly you find yourself asking new ones along the way—such clever writing.

This Edward is a tortured soul, and his journey is one that you can’t get enough of. What I love most about him is that he bleeds…just like the rest of us. He’s far from perfect, and he knows it. Plus, what’s not to love about an Edward that doesn’t just know about wine—but makes it!

Let me introduce you to Pie Girl and Grape Guy…

“Hey, Edward.”

“Holy!” Shit!

I nearly fell onto the clipping shears I held in my hands, when the crazy woman had snuck up, behind me.

“Jesus, Bella,”

She giggled. “Sorry.”

And that laugh.

Here we go again.

“What are…what you doing here?” I asked her, completely stumbling over my own words, as I pushed the dirt off of my jeans to greet her.

See her…

Shit.

The daisy dukes and tank top were not….helping.

“I um…” she looked embarrassed. “I mean, I just…” and bit her lip a little.

I felt every muscle in my body tensing at the body language she was sending. It made me both excited and uncomfortable, at the same time.

She was struggling with her words, just like I was, so I tried to lighten the mood a little.

“How’re you feeling today, Pie Girl?” I smiled and she rubbed her head a little. “Not as bad as I should, probably, I wish you would have warned me about wine hangovers.”

“Yeah, well, the better the wine, the less of a hangover…”

In a nutshell, Vines by FictionFreak95 gives you a healthy dose of drama, sigh-inducing romance, amazing UST and moments when your heart breaks. There’s humor, snarky dialogue, realistic character growth, and juicy, juicy lemons. See? I told you it had everything. Do yourself a favour and start 2012 with a great read. You’ll be glad you did.

Just like FoxxyJ said, Vines has everything you could want in a story. It’s dramatic, funny, and ohsohot!

Edward grew up on his father’s vineyard, surrounded by the wine-making business. He’s a rebellious kid and gets in trouble from time to time. After being accused of burning down a neighboring vineyard, he leaves his dad and enlists in the military, where he excels as a soldier.

When his father gets sick, he goes home to make arrangements for him and finds that everything is practically in shambles: the vineyard is overgrown and not being taken care of, his father’s house is in various states of disrepair, and his dad is even more ill than he suspected. Edward decides that he’ll need to sell everything, so he starts getting it in the best condition possible. He plans to use the money to set up his father’s healthcare. Regardless, running a vineyard and making wine isn’t in his plan anymore. What he doesn’t realize is that it’s in his blood, and sometimes you can’t run away from your destiny.

I love the banter between Edward and Bella, right from the beginning:

“You planning on blowing up the station?”

“That’s not funny.”

I scowled. “It was a little funny.”

“Um, no, it really wasn’t, do you have any idea how many people are risking their lives every day overseas for our country because someone thought bombing us was a good idea?”

So serious.

“I have an inkling,” I chided, and with that chide, I added a smirk. Hell, I couldn’t help myself.
Something that was apparently becoming habit with this woman.

“Yeah? Well your inkling should probably be better put to use by doing some research, pal, now if you don’t mind…I…”

Ouch.

“Oh, I mind…I mind very much,” I grinned, blocking her path with my body.

Her eyes were…deep. And looked sad, oddly enough, I thought.

Why in the Hell was I even doing this? I had shit to take care of.

A vineyard to sell.

Still, she was kinda cute.

“Excuse me,” she nearly shouted as her eyes darted around some, probably trying to get someone’s attention for some sort of help but what she didn’t know was, half these people wouldn’t come near me with a ten foot pole.

The other half, well, they pretty much liked to pretend that I didn’t exist.

“Would you like to have dinner with me?” I blurted out. I told myself it was to stop her from screaming holy bloody murder but in reality, I didn’t really know why I’d said it.

She laughed but not in a very friendly sort of way.

“I don’t think so.”

Double ouch.

“Why not?”

“I’m not interested, that’s why not,” she answered, getting a little angry then and yes, she was even cuter than before, now.

“You don’t seem uninterested, to me.”

I was still smiling, but trying to at least seem like I was trying to hide it.

Really.” She said it, blowing the brown bangs out of her eyes. It was sarcastic. And she not only looked quite adorable with the huffing, but she also sounded quite sexy while she was sarcastic, I decided.

Now I really did have to laugh.

“Really.”

I love the way that not only their relationship with each other evolves, but their discoveries of themselves is amazing. I seriously love this story, and I hope that you’ll read it right now!
