One night, after a failed attempt at fic diving, I begged the lovely ladies on my Twitter feed for anything to read that would get my mind off the atrocities that I had seen done to the English language for the previous hour and a half. When I was tweeted the link for this fic, I must say the title left me both curious and skeptical about what lay on the other side of the link, and when I first began reading, it seemed like your average Twific. However, it quickly turned into something different. It’s an Edward/Bella story but nothing like your typical boy-meets-girl-starring-a-sparklepire tale.

This Edward is an autopsy technician/pre-med student finishing up his last summer before starting med school in the Seattle morgue. Having been on one blind date with Social Worker Bella, he whiles away the night shift toying with the thought of calling her for the first time since their first meeting. It seems like a routine enough night until the newest arrival, the body of a young blonde man, goes missing from the cooler.

When Edward goes to investigate, he is surprised by the walking dead in the form of one Jasper Hale. A quick phone call to Alice seals Edward’s fate forever.

He closed the phone and looked down at it for a minute. He put it back into his pocket, then returned his right hand to my shoulder. He looked into my eyes, and his expression had changed – he looked sad, remorseful. That look was too much, pushing my fear and terror back up to the surface. I was almost vibrating in my skin, the warring emotions fighting each other.

“I’m sorry.” He slid his left hand up to my neck, gently pulling it to the side.

The rest of the plot is something of a mystery revealed through the eyes of a newborn vampire Edward with the help of his developing powers. Nothing is as it seems; even the thoughts of those around him cannot be trusted.

The story is a thriller from beginning to end with so many twists and turns that it will leave you wondering which way is up until the last moment. Temptation’s Girl has a wonderful gift of being able to weave threads through each chapter that are never brought together to make a whole picture until the very end. Reading this story is like watching a genius play chess, knowing that they have every move planned out in advance, but never being able to predict what is coming next. There is something for almost everyone here: vampires, action, romance, suspense, horror, drama, and angst. It’s a quick read, only 13 chapters with a promised epilogue left to go, although the story is quite complete without it. I suggest you give it a try with one warning; Alice is capable of doing almost anything to protect the ones she loves, especially Jasper. Personally, I’m hoping for a sequel.
