Fault by ineedyoursway

Official Description: Edward and Bella were childhood friends, but a catastrophic event in Junior High separated them. Can their relationship be repaired once they have both changed immensely? DARK AH.

dihenydd says: If this little rec had an AN it would have to mention Fats…

The Tattward and Inkella contest was a treasure trove for discovering new authors . In particular two first time writers spring to mind. One was theladyingrey42 with 3 Judges picks under her belt and the other was ineedyoursway whose White Blood was probably the most tweeted about fic. It was also probably responsible for more tears shed than any other fic before or since.

Her current story is ‘Fault’ and like everything she writes it is original in style and content. Her writing has the uncanny ability to seep under your skin and make you feel… uncomfortable. With unemotional language she has you feeling very emotional.

I know people who adore it and people who won’t read it but they all cite the same reason. It hits close to home. In describing the awkward everyday encounters of High School life, and the pain of teenage relationships, she touches the raw nerves of our own youthful experiences with an emotional realism that has you cringing and reliving every embarrassing moment you ever felt.

It is painful and difficult to read, yet compelling and easy to read, utilizing a stream of consciousness style, spare language and repetition. Her insight is razor sharp.

The first chapter is from BPOV and describes the incident which changed everything.

Was it rape? Any writer who writes about rape walks a fine line between sensitivity and sensationalism. Not only does Sway pull it of but she deals adeptly with that murky grey area of dubious consent. A common scenario for many young girls bending to peer pressure.

The theme of the story is Fault or Blame. Is it only the person’s fault, for acting the way they do? Is forgiveness possible? Does change in a person override their faults? Does it not?

After this event Bella changes and turns completely in on herself. She and Edward drift apart and follow quite different paths. They don’t behave the way you would like them to, but rather as you might have behaved yourself at that age. They’re not pure and perfect. Edward is superficial, ignorant, abrasive, jealous, confused, lacking self-esteem and he’s a follower. (He plays the piano badly because he never practices). Bella is confused, in denial, with no self-esteem, easily manipulated, and ignores Edward’s faults. Can they mend the breach as they grow and change?

This is not for the faint hearted. If you had anything like an average adolescence you are going to relate to it and it will hurt.

I would also recommend her one shot Diary of a Dead Man which is an entrant in the Darkward Vampfic contest.

I’ll leave the last words to Fats:- “ineedyoursway aka the most wonderful underage fucking jailbait author in the history of ever”

mozzer0906 says: I had been looking for a strong Bella characterization for an article I’m writing and someone told me to check out Fault. I was instantly drawn into the way that ineedyoursway writes the character. It is like you are completely a part of her mind, feeling her insecurities and indecisions. One of the things that connected me with this fic immediately was Bella’s desire to be invisible. It is such a perfect high school emotion to want to just blend in, not be noticed, and not stand out in a crowd. The reasoning behind her desire for invisibility is heartbreaking. You see Bella blames herself for an incident in her youth, she finds herself at fault for something that changed the trajectory of her life. With that heavy burden of guilt, she has withdrawn from her former best friend Edward for fear of how he will judge her. Flashing forward a few years, you see Edward and Bella still have that connection and you hope that somehow she will open up to him to discuss what happened that fateful day.

The other facet of Fault that I love is the way that ineedyoursway portrays James. He is kooky, quirky and instantly takes a shine to dear Bella, but not in that evil canon way of wanting to hunt her down and drink her blood. He doesn’t take no for an answer and refuses to let other people shit on Bella. He also tries to draw her out of her shell. It is refreshing to see James painted in this light and I am interested to see where his path is leading.

Every now and again there is a fic where I tell everyone I know YOU MUST READ THIS NOW. This is that fic, so stop reading me and go read this. Enjoy! Be sure to leave a review to show your love.

Kassiah says: There aren’t words to express how much I think you should read this.  I recently told ineedyoursway that I love her so much, I want to get a (henna) tattoo to celebrate her fuckawesomeness.  I found her when everyone was all atwitter over White Blood and Madame forgot to tell me not to read it.

Fault is amazing.  dihenydd and mozzer told you why you should read better than I could.  I just wanted to throw it in that though it is not wussperv approved, it is a must read.

Mens Rea: A Guilty Mind by Forbidden-Fruit81

Official Description: Edward Cullen is accused of murder for the slaying of his girlfriend. No one dares take on his case, until defense attorney Isabella Swan, that is. Edward proves to be a difficult client & the biggest challenge of her young but promising career.

dihenydd says: It is rare for a fic to grab me so completely from the very first chapter. I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of times this has happened, but this is definitely one of them.

I’ve always loved a good crime novel and this is shaping up that way. There is a mystery to be solved, there is courtroom drama, there are police investigations; and they are all dealt with skillfully and feel authentic.

However, no matter how good the story bad grammar and spelling, or disjointed narration can ruin the reading experience. Thankfully this is not the case here. There are virtually no typos and the story flows easily.

There are more POVs than I normally like to see (we have Jasper, Alice and Emmett as well as the expected Edward and Isabella) but it works. Told from a third person perspective the changing POVs each have a distinctive voice and create the feeling of witnesses giving evidence.

This is an original idea, well structured and consummately told; but what makes or breaks a story, for me, are the characters, and these come vividly to life.

Central to the plot (so far at least) is the passionate, emotionally flawed relationship between Edward and Tanya which explodes from the page. Edward’s behavior is callous and manipulative but the detailed rationale from his POV makes sense even though we know it is all wrong. His insatiable appetite for passion (which he only seems to be able to access through anger) seems a manifestation of his need to feel alive, to feel anything. At one and the same time we feel compassion for his pain and frustration at his inept life skills. This increases exponentially when he finds himself charged with Tanya’s murder whilst in an agony of grief over her death. He is forced to reveal his every private act for public scrutiny and judgement by people who know nothing about him. The rawness of his emotions is realistic to the point where the reader feels voyeuristic.

All the characters retain their essential canon characteristics but are by no means caricatures – Jasper as the empathetic friend, Emmett as the good cop, Rose as Bella’s tough yet caring partner and Alice as the loving and perceptive sister. Edward, of course, is emo to the nth degree and I thought it a nice touch that he is also a vegetarian. Bella is much more assertive than canon Bella but steadfast, fair and compassionate. There are hints that she has ‘been through some stuff’ so I think that will play a part later.

This is not a slow burn fic. If you aren’t hooked after the first chapter you probably aren’t going to be, so there is nothing lost by giving it a go. If you like a good story with a bit of mystery and well drawn characters with emotional intensity you will love it.

Thank you Lulubelle28 for reccing it to me.

Kassiah says: I don’t remember who told me to read this story. But ohmygod. Ya’ll know that I don’t want to read a fic that has Edward even thinking of kissing another girl. So it is a testament to the fuckawesomeness of this story that I am telling you to run, don’t walk, to your nearest browser window and open this bitch up.

The story starts off with College Professor and International Bestseller Edward basically getting ready to fuck his longtime girlfriend, Tanya. I hate to admit it, but it is hotttt. There is no question that Edward is an ass though. When confronted with the possibilty of Tanya leaving him because he won’t marry her, he retorts, “You won’t leave. You wouldn’t. I’d have to take back that Audi. You sucked a lot of dick to get it. Wouldn’t want it to go to waste.ouch. After their almost violent fuckathon, Edward gets up to take a shower and returns to find his girlfriend dead. The way Forbidden-Fruit81 describes the emotions and thoughts that Edward is going through is absolutely amazing.

He calls best friend Jasper Hale, who rushes over and calls the police. Jasper quickly realizes that Edward needs an attorney, “A John-Grisham-novel-meets-Albert Einstein-meets-Tom-Cruise-in-the-Firm -fucking-attorney.” Cue Isabella Swan. Edward isn’t happy about her being his lawyer; he goes so far as to call her “Strawberry Shortcake” The developments to the story follow like a great suspense thriller. As we learn more and more about what happened, we get sucked further in. Although the way the fic is told is different, I agree with dihenydd that the mixed POVs add to rather than distract from the story.

This story is well-written with amazing character development. It mindfucks you and leaves you begging for more. I want Edward and Bella to get it on so bad, there aren’t words. This certainly isn’t the typical type of story that I would read, but I implore you to check it out. You will seriously be missing out if you don’t.
