Minuet in F (you) Major by LightHeartLoreli

Official Description: Dissonance: A chord that sounds incomplete until it resolves itself on a harmonious chord. Will calculating conductor Edward Cullen and spirited cellist Rosalie Hale write an adagio for love or a requiem for love lost? A FGB Novella for Team Cellolie.

If the title Minuet in F you Major doesn’t get your attention, then just know the fabulous writing of Lightstardusting and LoreliD will do the job. When I saw that there was a new Edward and Rose (yes, you read that correctly) story and I saw the summary, I was ecstatic. I happen to love Edward and Rosalie stories and feel that sometimes that combination can be so much more powerful than Edward and Bella, but that is a discussion for another day.

In Minuet in F you Major we meet both Rosalie and Edward who are involved in the world of orchestra music. Edward is a conductor and Rosalie is a cellist. They meet when Rosalie auditions for a chair in his Philharmonic orchestra. As Rosalie auditions, Edward sees a very independent, maybe stubborn woman who he feels would not take well to his direction. Rosalie is turned down, and then of course, we see sparks fly.

He shrugged apologetically, but in her opinion not really, and once more repeated the word. “No.” He watched her jaw tense, her lips twitch; her face was so easy to read. She was livid… and absolutely stunning.

He didn’t back down from her. He kept his smirk firmly in place; she needed to remember it was she who had auditioned, asking to be judged. Finally, she collected her cello, finally breaking the stare as she exited stage left.

Along the way, we learn about Edward and Rose’s daily life, both of which are not what is expected. Edward lives a very routine life, no variations from day to day. Rosalie has a few secrets hidden up her sleeve that shows her softer side. She is sarcastic and funny, and knows who she is. She is awesome. We also learn that both love their pets dearly, and Edward’s dog, Jake, works as a helpful tool to bring these two closer and is adorable.

Watching these two interact with each other, seeing who can gain the upper hand, has been so fun. You can almost taste the tension and I am just waiting for that explosion to happen.

If a Rose and Edward fic scares you, I really, really think you should venture out a little bit and try this story out. I think this story is wonderful and enjoyable. It has everything a great story needs. Take a chance and check it out.

It’s no secret that I’m a little bit close minded when it comes to what I’ll read. I don’t usually venture into the unknown, unless I’m pretty darn sure it’s going to be great. Jumping into this story was effortless – because of the title, and because of the authors. Both of these girls are absolute sweethearts, and I know they have a passion for what some in the fandom consider unconventional pairings.

Which is what this story is… but don’t let that deter you from reading, because it’s fantastic.

The story opens with the ‘no’ heard round the Philharmonic. Rosalie Hale is a gifted cellist. She’s used to getting her way, and having auditions that are really just formalities. When she shows up at the Philharmonic to audition for second chair cellist in the orchestra and meets the conductor… things change.

She had done her homework and knew the people for whom she’d be auditioning. The panel consisted of four board members for the Philharmonic, and of course, the conductor, Edward Cullen. She had not yet met him but she knew of his reputation. Young for a conductor, recently divorced, a bit broody, but a brilliant composer. Though Rosalie wasn’t one for gossip, she couldn’t miss the whispers traveling through the musical community. That was because they weren’t quiet, they were loud. That’s how things were in their world. Even still, she looked forward to working with him.

Oh, Edward. He’s structured and stiff and lonely since his divorce. It’s just him and Jack (his shepherd-chow mix). But that’s not all there is to him… When the first chair cellist has a family emergency, what’s a guy to do?

Eat some crow.

That’s right – he has no choice but to call the one person he’s just made an enemy out of. Not wanting to do it over the phone, he takes a huge chance and calls to request that they meet in person. Rosalie agrees, and asks him to meet her.

When Edward shows up… he finds something different than he expected…

“What kinda musical instra-instra-instruments do you play?”

Edward looked around, appearing almost sheepish. “Well, I play the piano,” he offered.

Rosalie chimed in. “Oh, he’s being shy. He can play lots of instruments. And he’s a conductor for the Philharmonic!”

The children oohed at the fancy terms. Leah’s tiny hands found her hips and she tilted her head to the side, her silky pigtails flipping. “What does that mean?”

Rosalie’s smile was laced with saccharine. “He waves around a little stick and tells other people what to do.”

At only five chapters in, we’ve already seen that these girls have created two very incredible characters. That they’ve taken the time to research what they’re writing about and that the future promises to be filled with some wonderful things.

These two are bound to be explosive together and undoubtedly make each other crazy in all of the best ways possible. I personally cannot wait for it.

Do yourself a favor, open your mind to new things, and go read this wonderful story!

Hell hath no fury like a celloist scorned… especially when it’s Rosalie. Minuet in F (you) Major may win the prize for my favorite title in recent history, but I’m also completely drawn in by the level of detail paid to the cello playing. I’m told (by Lightstardusting herself, since I met her in person last weekend) that’s compliments of Chele681, one of the prereaders.

One of the things that always, always sucks me into a fic is realism. It’s pretty apparent when someone is writing something they know a lot about or finds the expertise to fake it. Whether it’s virgins writing lemons or someone who’s never been to a small town writing about life in Forks, it shouldn’t be done. Writing what you know makes a difference to the passion of what gets put down on paper (or a computer screen) – so I VERY much appreciate anyone who takes the time to either learn or find the right expert help.

Now that my gushing is out of the way, I’ll say I like the tension between Rosalie and Edward in this fic. Sometimes Rosalie and Edward pairings fall flat because we all want to obsess about Bella and Edward and writing these two together can seem forced. In this case, Rosalie’s not a raging bitch – she’s just self-assured and reserved. Now that I think about it, Edward can be described just the same. It makes sense that the two of them would immediately be at odds when they meet, but it creates some lovely strain. The discomfort in the air around them is palpable.

This fic is still beginning, but so far my favorite passage has to be this:

Edward would handle the children. The music commonality was all it took for the kids to surround Edward, firing questions at him. The caregivers stood back, watching the kids as they encircled Edward. Some started forward in an attempt to rescue him, but Rosalie just shook her head slightly and shrugged.

“He waves around a little stick and tells other people what to do.” One of the caregivers snorted, trying to cover a laugh. They didn’t know the extent or reason of the strife between Edward and Rosalie, but they’d be blind not to sense the underlying tension below the surface, even while the two adults played nicely in front of the children.

Minuet in F (you) Major is definitely going on my alert list.

The Long Way Home by TheHeartOfLife

http://twilighted.net/viewstory.php?sid=9752

Official Description: There was a girl. She loved a boy. And then she lost it all. Will her journey back to the place where it all began and ended light the path for forgiveness, or will it swallow her whole? A story about friendship, love and the true meaning of coming home.

Don’t miss the One-Shot that inspired it, The Corner of Your Heart.

saranic says: I am super excited to do a story review for The Long Way Home by TheHeartofLife. This story was recommended to me by Cheddah, and I always read what she is selling. Now, before I tell you too much about this story, I just want you to take a step back out of your comfort zone and give this a chance. This isn’t your typical Edward and Bella story. In fact, it isn’t an Edward and Bella story at all. We do get to see Edward and Bella have a happy life, but it is from a distance and we are actually along for the ride with Rosalie. Yep, if you are still with me, I said Rosalie. I happen to think that Rosalie is one of those characters who always gets a bad rap or who isn’t explored enough. I am even one of those people who, gasp, has read an Edward and Rosalie story and loved it.

So, if you are still with me, let me just tell you about this wonderful story. The Long Way Home actually started off as a one shot that has now developed as a multi-chapter story. The one shot, The Corner of Your Heart, is a melancholy and beautifully written story about two friends who have completely different feelings for each other. Rosalie and Edward have been best friends since kindergarten. It is one of those lifelong friendships that one can only hope to have in her life. The thing is, once Edward meets Bella, Rosalie has figured out that she is in love with Edward. Edward, on the other hand, is completely and totally in love with Bella and they have an amazing relationship. We see the hurt, anger, jealously, and just pure raw emotion from Rosalie. It is an unrequited love story from Rosalie’s perspective.

Fast forward twenty years and we have the start of The Long Way Home. Rosalie gets a phone call from Alice to inform her of Edward and Bella’s wedding, which happens to be on that Saturday. Rosalie has moved away from her friends and has lost complete contact with Edward. We know something happened between Edward and Rosalie that has caused them to stop talking; however, she is still shocked to learn of the wedding from Alice. As you read you will feel so much sadness, not just at the longing she feels for Edward, but also at the feeling of loss from their friendship.

Rosalie makes the decision to go home to deal with what has happened and to be there for her friends. She knows it will be hard, but she knows that it is something she needs to do, for her and for them.

“I missed him so much in this moment, my back pressed against the bookshelf, my fingers curled around an innocuous series of photos that only served to remind me of the things I no longer had. A sob escaped me before I could stop it and then I was crying in earnest, the tears running down my face unchecked. I missed his voice and his smell and his laugh. I missed the annoying way he refused to let anyone talk in the car when a song he loved came on, the way he concentrated on the lyrics and how his fingers moved so subtly, as if he were imagining himself playing the piano. I missed his friendship. I missed feeling like I was at home when I was with him and the others – Alice, Jasper, Emmett. Hell, I even missed Bella.”

I am so impressed with how TheHeartofLife makes you feel sympathy with Rosalie. We normally see her as a cold and emotionless person. Rosalie makes you feel so many emotions and you hurt with her. The author does a remarkable job of showing us how loving Edward and Bella are with each other. She also makes Bella’s character one whom I really do like. Bella takes everything in stride and doesn’t appear to be jealous or anxious around Rosalie. She even tries to help things along between the strife with Edward and Rosalie.

The thing I love most about this story is the nostalgia that we get to feel with Rosalie as she deals with being home. We get to see flashbacks to her and Edward’s friendship and her just remembering her childhood.

“It was the same feeling I got years later when Alice and I would sneak out of my house and meet Edward and Jasper at the nearby golf course. We’d lie in the grass and stare up at the sky, sometimes laughing and telling jokes in hushed tones so we wouldn’t get caught. Sometimes Alice and Jasper would sneak off to make out and it would just be Edward and me lying next to one another in silence. It was then that I’d let my mind go. I’d imagine myself floating away into the inky depths of the sky, just disappearing, and I’d have to sit up suddenly, press my feet flat against the ground with my hands over them so that I knew I was still there.”

As we are along on this ride with Rosalie we also catch glimpses of a fun, sexy, confident, and all around great Emmett. I myself, am a huge Emmett fan, so if you are too, I think that you will love this story. I have turned into quite the Emmett shipper lately and I know this story will definitely fulfill my Emmett love. Don’t get me wrong, I still adore Edward, but it is so refreshing to see different characters explored and a unique plot developed. Plus we do see Edward and Bella happy, it is an added bonus.

Now, I am not going to lie to you. This story has many moments of sadness and loneliness. It is all told from Rose’s perspective and you must remember she is truly and deeply in love with Edward. We see how deep her sadness goes and many times it is angsty.

“Do you think I’ll ever get over him?”

If she said yes, I would believe her. I needed to believe something other than what I believed now, which was that I would never find someone else. That he would be it for me and I would always belong to him, even while he belonged to someone else. Even if it was forever.

I heard her shift, then sigh. “It’s not about getting over him, Rose, it’s about letting go.”

I really do hope you take a chance on this story because I know you will not be disappointed. TheHeartofLife has such a niche for making you just feel when you read each chapter. She is very talented and I just know that if you step out of your comfort zone, just a little, you will be just as into this story as I am.

Kassiah says: NGL, I went into reading this fic practically kicking and screaming. I mean, Rosaward? I. Cannot. Do. It. Then I remembered that neither could my girl saranic, and I decided to just quit whining and read it. Guess what happened? I fell in love with this story!

I always *try* to branch out and read stuff that I wouldn’t necessarily choose right off the bat, so I am not just bringing you happy, fluffy, smutty E/B fics all the time. I really do try. So, being able to rec a story that is Rosalie-centric makes me happy.  Plus this story has one of the best Emmetts ever.  The Long Way Home is incredibly well-written and emo, and the best thing for my wp-heart is that I don’t have to
give up the E/B dream to get that. Edward and Bella are happy–insanely in love. And that kills Rosalie.

We were interrupted by low voices and quick footsteps. Bella and Edward appeared out of the darkness and Emmett snapped out, “fuck,” before I could get to it. God, I was so tired of being interrupted, but with six people so inextricably tied together by events and friendship in the same vicinity, it seemed impossible to get a conversation started and finished without someone barging in. Still, it didn’t stop the irritation from flooding through me as I swept my gaze over them.

They were grinning at one another, Edward’s phone clutched in his hand. Their clothes and hair were disheveled, a small leaf hanging off the hem of Bella’s shorts. My eyes locked onto that little innocuous green thing. I watched it brush against the pale skin of her thigh, and my blood started to pound angrily through my body.

It was obvious that they had been rolling around in the grass somewhere, probably quietly fornicating, and that fucking leaf suddenly stood for everything that she had that I didn’t – my former place with Edward, Emmett, Alice and Jasper, the promise of forever with someone who took such good care of her heart, love.

It was the leaf that fully ignited the flame that sparked just moments ago with Emmett. It turned into something ugly and I found that I was furious. My hands balled into fists at my side.

This story is definitely worth reading. I’m so glad that I decided to read it.  Even if you think you hate Rosalie, like I do lol, give it a try!

Nicknames and Rumors by SuitablyIronicMoniker

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5677882/1/Nicknames_and_Rumors

Official Description: Small towns are notorious for their gossip & while Bella does her best to ignore it, it doesn’t take long before she’s the subject…AH/AU Canon couples.

saranic says: Do you ever just need a story that contains a sweet and lighter story line? I know that I am a habitual angst reader. I prefer it; I live for that ache when the characters are dealing with melancholy times in their lives. I love it even more when it feels like my heart is going to break and then I am left thinking about it after I have read and digested the latest chapter. I have no idea why I love it, I just do. Sometimes, though, I just need a break from it, I need some time to let my brain clear up from feeling so heavy. I was doing a fic dive where I look at other people’s favorites a couple of weeks ago and came across the story Nicknames and Rumors. It had a low review count, which is another factor I look for lately, and I started reading the first chapter and didn’t stop until I was all caught up.

Nicknames and Rumors is a high school fic with a super sweet Bella. She truly is one of a few Bellas I have read that is just all around sweet, sarcastic, funny, and doesn’t want to stir up any drama. She is new to Forks after coming to live with Charlie. Bella is befriended by Jessica and quickly adopted into their group of friends. Bella quickly realizes that the small town of Forks is all about rumors, especially when it comes to the Cullens and the Hales. Bella doesn’t follow the rumors; she feels that everyone deserves to not be judged from what someone else has said. As she adapts to the new town and school, she has fun with her new group of friends. It isn’t one of those stories where you hate Jessica or Mike. I actually like the secondary characters of Nicknames and Rumors.

Bella, of course, meets Edward and he is one broody guy. He obviously has socialization issues and tends to treat Bella rather poorly at first. She feels as if he hates her, like canon Bella and Edward. But, as time goes on, they develop a friendship. Bella also is befriended by Alice which also helps Bella become closer with Edward. As high school goes, though, there are plenty of rumors involving Bella and Edward. As much as Bella doesn’t care for being the center of these rumors, she doesn’t let it bring her down. Edward has turned out to be a sweet guy with her, as you read you find out how one rumor can cloud your perception of someone else.

Nicknames and Rumors is a funny and sweet story. I have enjoyed reading it very much; it is my time away from so much drama. Suitablyironicmoniker has done a good job of making this story fun and easy to read. She updates frequently, which is always a plus too.

AmeryMarie says: I found this fic by accident when it was only a few chapters in. Okay, to be honest I was dumpster diving on ffn in order to avoid doing anything that could be even remotely construed as productive, but whatever. The story was only a couple of chapters in and had the paltriest amount of reviews ever, which rather angered me. It became a personal mission of mine that this fic get the recognition that it deserves, and I started mentioning it to everyone I know, rec’d it on my thread at Twi’d, and in my last update.

I can’t—nor would I ever presume to—take credit for the increase in reviews, but I was thrilled for her when they finally began to; I just adore this story.

I like angst. A lot. I like to read it and am virtually incapable of writing anything but…even when I try. On occasion, if it’s not too syrupy sweet, I will read fluffy/happy fic, and this story is currently my go to ‘makes me smile’ story for so many reasons.

It’s a simple story—no complicated story arcs, crazy plotlines, or forced fuckery for fuckery’s sake—that I find to be realistic and relatable. It captures so much of what I remember from my high school/teenage years—the uncertainty about…well, everything, trying to find a sense of self while navigating your way through the hell that is teenage girl drama, the highs and lows of a first relationship, making out and starting to experiment sexually. The making out and experimenting was the only part I would care to repeat, truthfully, but it’s still entertaining to watch Bella go through it all.

Normally, I would find a fic of this nature to be as enjoyable as reading the poetry of a teenage girl, because that is most likely what it would be. Suitablyironicmoniker avoids all the purple prose, oh-woe-is-me, it’s-just-so-hard pitfalls, and actually manages to write a believable, likable Bella, something that seems to be pretty hard to do. She is so levelheaded and grounded, but in a totally age appropriate way, because she’s not above acting like an irrational, emotional girl on occasion.

I completely commend SIM for choosing to write this entirely in Bella’s point of view. This is Bella’s story, and she owns it entirely. Never once have I find myself giving a fuck what Edward’s point of view would be. I probably would have flounced had she chosen to include other POV’s.

While the story is not entirely drama free, the little bit that is there does not feel elaborate or contrived in any way, isn’t dragged out unnecessarily, and it only goes to further my love for this Bella. She is just so fucking unsure, and has no one to help her find her way through the maze; I just want to hug her or be her big sister.

If you aren’t reading this fic, do. I don’t know if it’s possible to dislike it, but if you really hate it, feel free to spam me regarding your disappointment. Unless this story goes completely off track and takes a left onto What-the-Eff Way, I feel safe saying that I don’t think I will regret my decision to recommend it. (And, apropos of nothing, can I tell you how much I lol every time I see the authors penname? Lots.)

Just Wait by InstantKarmaGirl

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5320917/1/Just_Wait
http://twilighted.net/viewstory.php?sid=7388

Official Description: AH AU OOC In a world saturated by vices, Bella is forced to move in with her father to avoid the repercussions of her past deeds. But after she meets the socially withdrawn adopted son of the town’s doctor, will she allow herself to open up and heal?

Saranic says:  I can’t remember where or how I found the story Just Wait, but I was so happy I did. This story is extremely well written. The author, InstantKarmaGirl, has done an amazing job of storytelling. Let me warn you, there are some issues of abuse, it won’t be detailed or graphic, but it is in the story and necessary. Bella is a girl who hasn’t had an ideal life; she has been dealt a rough hand and acts towards life with the same feelings. She has learned to cope with self medicating and rebelling any way she can. She is forced to move in with Charlie after committing a serious offense. Bella’s character has a lot of growing to do and is very rough around the edges.

Once she moves to Forks, she befriends Jacob, who enables her to continue her past behaviors. Jacob’s character isn’t a dislikeable character, but he isn’t doing Bella any favors.

Edward has some major issues of his own, which are impossible for him to hide. He has a brilliant mind, but his language and speech issues force him to be a social outcast. He is picked on and struggles with communicating. I have to say it is refreshing for a change to see such a vulnerable Edward with flaws. I love my strong Edward, and I feel that this one is dealing with what he deals with, but he does have some issues that make the reader so sympathetic for him.

Bella and Edward meet in school where Bella witnesses Edward suffering through a normal day. They get a chance to become closer as part of an agreement to participate in therapy. This therapy consists of one on one therapy, group time, and also partner interaction. Bella and Edward are paired together. We are getting to see Edward coming out of his shell around Bella, while Bella shows compassion and defends Edward.

This story is very much angsty and is written so well. I was sucked in while reading and am looking forward to these two healing each other. If you like teenage angst and a unique Edward and Bella, I would highly recommend this story.

Kassiah says: I love high school fics, so when one of my very favorite people, bsmog, told me about this story, I jumped on it.  She did warn me about the angst and heartfail, but like a fool, I didn’t listen.  I am kinda glad that I didn’t.

Just Wait is not your typical hs story.  It has your far from typical Bella and Edward as well.  The story begins with us listening to a phone convo in which Renee tells Charlie that it’s “his turn” to take Bella, and if he doesn’t, her only other options are jail or a half-way house.  Like I said, it’s a far cry from our usual self-sacrificing Bella going to live with her excited-to-finally-get-his-girl-home father.  She has issues.  Edward has issues too, but not in the bad-boy kinda way.

This story is so well-written and just outright real, I don’t have the words to express why you should read it.  I am not gonna lie to you, though, it is nothing like the fun smexy hs fics you have come to expect me to recommend to you.  Why do I love it?  Besides the total genius and characterization that InstantKarmaGirl puts into practically every word, it allows me to feel justified in my severe dislike for Jacob.  And like Saranic said, it is also so different to see a vulnerable Edward.  This story just draws you in.  I am very interested to see where this leads.

If you aren’t a total wussperv like me and can handle some angst or if you want a story that is real and compelling, I think you should check out Just Wait
