Pwns of the Week – 4/14/11

Every week, we mention the stories that are pwning us~fics that we are just so darned excited about, we can barely think of anything else. We asked you to tell us what’s pwning you and you answered! The top five plus five randomly chosen (using random.org) make up this week’s TEN FICS THAT PWN YOU!

Please note, the Pwns of the Week come from our readers–they are TOTALLY reader-submitted (except for the Lesbison pwns). We don’t check the links, we don’t verify graphic content, we don’t look to see if someone copied someone’s reasoning for pwnage. Not trying to be mean about it–we just don’t. We thought our readers would like to know what our other readers are reading (damn, that sounds wordy). In any case, we hope you’ll check out these stories, but please realize that unless it has been recommended by us in a full post or as one of our personal pwns, proceed with caution. You should do that anyway–we’ve been known to like some crazy stuff!

A Voice in the Darkness by: katinki
Summary: My name is Isabella. Just Isabella. Everything has been taken from me. I am one of the unseen. I am one of the unheard. M/Dark-Graphic-Violent/Please see warning before reading.

Why this fic pwns alzzu: I realize this has story has already been featured at Fictionators, and very recently at that, but it deserves all the promotion it can get.
The author is not kidding when she says it’s dark, graphic and violent. She also calls it awful and disturbing. It is. In fact, I think it’s probably one of the most disturbing and awful stories I’ve ever read, and I’ve read a lot. The subject matter is horrible, but the writing is amazing, and it truly feels realistic, and in my opinion, that’s what makes it so disturbing. Because this feels real, it feels like it could happen, and unfortunately, it is happening all over the world right now. Another thing that made it resonate is I’m only a little older than Bella in this story, and I know that with a little bad luck, just being in the wrong place at the wrong time, I could actually become just like her. And with a little more bad luck, there would really be absolutely nothing I could do.
I know that saying a story is horrifying and will likely cause you to lose some sleep isn’t exactly a glowing endorsement, but in this case, I mean it as a compliment. It’s a change in perspective, and sometimes it feels like we could use it. Because not everything Edward does is okay just because he’s Edward.

Empires of the Mind by: Hibbleton78
Summary: When Bella learns her “ability” is more than a quirk, she must work with new friends to thwart the corrupt organization looking to exploit their powers for personal gain.
Why this fic pwns Arabella: This story has an interesting plot and build-up. The traditional Cullen kids are an all-human “dream team” of supernatural talents, wanting only to be left alone. They come across college student Bella and convince her to join their clan when it’s clear that her telekinesis is no longer a secret. Very unique and very fun to read.

Foul Territory by: rinabina
Summary: After being dragged to a baseball game by her best friend, Bella Swan meets handsome first baseman, Edward Cullen with the help of a rogue foul ball. There’s something about him that she can’t put out of her head, and apparently neither can he. E/B AU AH

How Can I Help You? by: sugunary
Summary: After years away, Bella Swan returns to a place she thought she left behind, and someone she wasn’t sure wanted to see her, ever again. A story of how your life can change when you least expect it.
Twilight – Rated: M – English – Romance/Drama – Chapters: 22 – Words: 111,534 – Reviews: 239 – Updated: 4-11-11 – Published: 1-18-11 – Bella & Edward

Why this fic pwns Angela: This is a great story of first, second, and third chances at love. A teenage Bella meets a happily married Edward and develops a crush then tragedy strikes and things progress but the timing isn’t right. Bella moves on but years later they meet again while she is separated from her husband but outside forces keep them apart. Finally they reunite and they find out who is responsible for keeping them apart and you get to read about how they piece back together their family. There is no cheating in this story.

It’s Not The Life It Seems by: ParkerJ
Summary: Bella & her twin plan a short-term switch. Edward meets Bella acting as Marie. What happens when she goes back to being Bella? Don’t let the # of reviews hold you back from reading this story. I uploaded the 1st 8 chapters without waiting for reviews.
Twilight – Rated: M – English – Angst/Romance – Chapters: 19 – Words: 123,460 – Reviews: 100 – Updated: 2-28-11 – Published: 10-16-10 – Bella & Edward

Why this fic pwns Decca: So it’s The Parent Trap–Twific style. Bella is the innocent, sheltered and domestically inclined girl we all know, while Marie’s life has been royally screwed up, mostly by a neglectful mother. They switch places and Bella slowly realises what exactly her twin has been going through. She meets an Edward who dislikes Marie but finds himself strangely drawn to this new version of her. Marie, conversely, is instantly smitten with Bella’s best friend Jacob, who is way more perceptive than the girls had bargained for. There is intricate and disturbing back story, spark-creating interaction and a good dose of angst. Personally, I am on tenterhooks for the next chapter.

Lingering Shadows by: mamasutra
Summary: She married the man of her dreams, but how will she find her happily ever after when she can’t step away from a past that overshadows their life? How do you fight a ghost? How do you outrun a phantom of perfection that you can never live up to?
Why this fic pwns IcarusToSun: Lingering Shadows by mamasutra only has a handful of chapters up so far but I can really tell that this will be good. Very few stories, and I mean very very few, can make me this emotional. The last one I recall was Emancipation Proclamation. In Lingering Shadows, things start off very mysteriously with Bella lying in a pool of her own blood and Edward going frantic. Not many clues are given in the prologue. Then the story goes back into the past, opening with Bella at her grandmother’s funeral with a little hint of her encountering a grief stricken Edward attending his wife’s funeral service at the same place. There’s so much promise in there that I can hardly wait to find out how things will unfold. I strongly recommend it.

Picture This by: MadamThang
Summary: Edward is a reluctant celebrity, Bella a closeted photographer assigned to bring him to life. EPOV mostly, AU / AH / OOC.
Why this fic pwns Cathleen: Because it’s so so much more as this little summary will tell you! It’s flawlessly written and the idea is great. It has secrets and mystery and sexy times and a little drama and it’s simply well-conceived and will remind you every so often of our sexy Robward. :)
Please mention this story. It truly earns it.

Seven Day Weekend by: JandMsMommy
Summary: They were young, in love…and they raised hell for seven days. AH, E/B, Very OOC, lemons, Promised HEA
Why this fic pwns Misti: This story is very different than anything I have ever read. It takes place in 1957. Bella & Edward are both living life as two kids in love & then Edward does something that changes everything. And they have to go on the run. But it’s the journey these two take together that is the real story. Please give it a chance!

Sexy Silk by: jlho
Summary: Bella is a smart mouthed, celebrity hating P.A. to a Hollywood Stylist. Edward is an arrogant Hollywood playboy. What happens when their paths cross on the night of the Globes? Rated M for swears and lemons.
Why this fic pwns Amber: LEMONS. LEMONS. LEMONS. LEMONS.
That’s is one of the main reasons why I love this story. jlho’s Lemons are some of the hottest that i’ve read. She’s got crazy talent when it comes to lemons, Like change your panties after each lemon, kind of talent. Her snark is pretty awesome too. Snark and Lemons are my two favorite things that make up a story, and jlho does both of them PERFECTLY. I love love love love love this story. HARD.

We Were Here by: sweetlolapop
Summary: Upon waking, there’s a brief, blissful period in which you don’t yet recall the sins of the night before, but eventually, you have to open your eyes. I’m Bella Swan, seventeen years old, cheerleader. This morning I woke up in the wrong bed.
Why this fic pwns TwiSherry: Headboard.
Need I say more?

Empires of the Mind by Hibbleton

Official Description: When Bella learns her “ability” is more than a quirk, she must work with new friends to thwart the corrupt organization looking to exploit their powers for personal gain.

To call Empires of the Mind “all human” is a bit of a stretch. Can you really limit something full of super powers “all human?” I think not, but that’s really beside the point. Hibbleton78 has gone above and beyond the trivial, human world and into the world of X-Men, Superman, and all our other high-powered, yet human, favorites.

The use of powers is key in “Empires of the Mind,” where Hibbleton has made a show of manipulating established talents and assinging a few new ones. As the story starts, the only talent Bella is aware of is a sort of telekinesis – moving objects without touching them:

“Her fingers—spanning the length of the pen—flexed up and down in a rolling motion, but always staying an inch away. It was subtle; nobody ever thought much of it if they had caught her. Her hand stayed close enough that should someone see what she was really doing, it could be explained away as having seen the action at a bad angle and it had simply appeared as though she wasn’t touching the pen. It was a believable lie and worked the few times Bella had been caught; nobody ever thought to question her explanation. Who would believe otherwise?”

Alice notices the motion, and immediately corners Bella after class. Alice tells her that there is a powerful group called the Volturi who are always seeking “those with talent.” She insists Bella meet the Cullen Clan (though they’re not related in this one), who offer to take Bella in after discovering she lives alone. However, Bella’s wary – why should she trust them, and why should she give up the life she was enjoying? Who could possibly be after a girl who can simply move objects with her mind? How do they know about this group who are after her?

The Cullens, are no slouches in the talent department, either. My favorite talent is Emmett’s – he’s cryptesthesic, which essentially makes him the genius beyond all geniuses. Though he’s still our favorite massive snuggly bear, Hibbleton has taken the “jock” stereotype and turned it on its head, allowing Emmett to have a formidable power.

This interest in reversing things, while still embracing a character’s inner essence, is a huge part of what drew me into the story and leaves me squeeing for every update. The Volturi are dark and mysterious, with powers of their own, and there’s not a lot of downtime in the plot – even when explaining the complexities of the situation Bella has found herself in, Hibbleton moves the action right along with drama and twists at every turn. Bella, with the help of her new friends, unlocks more of her talents and starts learning how to use them.

She better learn quick, ’cause The Volturi are coming, and things won’t be pretty.

My never ending quest to find something completely different in the fandom led me to Empires of the Mind by Hibbleton78. This is sort of a Twilight meets The X-Men kind of a thing in a way. The people who already had special powers still have the same things – Edward can read minds, Alice can see into the future, Jasper affects moods – but in this all human fic, Bella has both a mind shield and she has psychokinesis, Rosalie does this neat astral projection thing, and Emmett’s brain is like a super computer and he just knows things. I particularly like Hibbleton’s Emmett in this fic because he’s insanely smart, something a lot of other fics don’t do.

After Edward, Alice, Jasper, Emmett, and Rosalie come looking for Bella to shield her from the Volturi, a shadowy group with their own powers bent on sucking people with extra talents into their fold to do very bad things, Edward takes an unnatural dislike to Bella.

She shifted her body to face him more directly. “No, that wasn’t nothing. I’m not an idiot. You clearly have more to say.” Her temper grew when she felt the now familiar discomfort of somebody trying to get past her natural shield. “And stop doing that.”

“Then stop blocking me!” His irritation spiked at his gift being rendered completely useless around her.

The car sped through the streets as the two squared off inside. Bella paid no attention to the houses and trees racing past her window. “You know I don’t know how.” She hated to admit to any weakness, even if it wasn’t much of a secret.

“No, I don’t know that.” His tone was abrupt and he didn’t even bother to look at her as he spoke.

“What the hell are you talking about? Did we not already establish that I have no clue how I’m doing it?”

They were pulling up to the gate at the house so Edward didn’t answer right away, but as soon as they were moving again he picked up where they had left off. “You say you have no clue, but it’s pretty convenient, don’t you think? That so far you’ve been able to master everything we’ve thrown at you… but this, this you somehow can’t figure out. The one thing that we’d all find most useful you can’t seem to do.”

I look forward to every single chapter of this fic because I don’t have a clue where it’s going, and it’s just so interesting! Be sure to give this one a read – it’s a definite treat when so many other fics are retelling the same story again and again.
