Fictionator Favorites Friday – 3/11/11

Kass has been partying at Mardi Gras most of this week, so we thought we’d do something a little bit different. While we aren’t recommending any new stories, we’ve got something for you! This time, it’s AH ExB fics. Some are complete, a few are WIPs, and we have a couple of one-shots, too. Whether you’re new to the fandom or just want to take a walk down memory lane, here are fifteen stories that are do-not-miss:

The Best I Ever Had by WhatsMyNomDePlume

Summary: Sex between friends complicates everything. Bella knows this. But she has no idea how much more Edward is going to complicate things.

We can barely articulate all the things we love about this fic. It’s hot. The characters have great dialogue. The plot is awesome. Edward makes us swoon. We want to kiss WhatsMyNomDePlume for this fic–repeatedly.

Branching Inward by LifeInTheSnow

Summary: He’s a brilliant, sensual, tactile artist with a huge personality and love for life…at least, he used to be. She’s a shrewd historian, content to observe from a distance…until now. At Newcoven College in Clearwater, OH, no secret is safe. All Human.

Gah. This Edward. That is all.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s by HMonster4 and Profmom

Summary: Edward admires Bella from afar, until a chance meeting convinces him to send her messages in the Tiffany’s window. Can their two worlds merge beyond the grand gesture? elaboration/continuation of the One Shot. Collaboration between HMonster4 and ProfMom72.

Drama. Mystery. Sweaty Edward in a Grey t-shirt. Breakfast at Tiffany’s has everything we love in a fic, without the gut-wrenching angst. If you haven’t read this classic gem, you have to check it out!

Click & Strum by Bratty-Vamp

Summary: Isabella was anxious to start a new life, in a new location. And she was eager to put a few more question marks in her rigid day-planner. But the guy down the hall might have presented a larger deviation from her organized life than she bargained for.

Click & Strum has a strong Bella, an enigmatic Edward, and a Rosalie that we sort of love. Bratty-Vamp always dishes out an amazing story, and this one is a do-not miss as well.

Fall to Ruin One Day by sleepyvalentina

Summary: He wanted to be the most powerful man on earth. As far as she was concerned, he already was. Love. Longing. A decade of regret. Time changes nothing…or does it?

Sleepyvalentina has this ability to create characters you identify with. Such is the case (for us, anyway) with all of her stories. This Bella is awesome, probably one of our favorites ever, because of the fact that she’s tough and her younger self possesses the same young naivety we all did at one time. The way the story’s written between past and present is creative and every single chapter has the ability to make us laugh, cry or pant like we’re in heat.

Lead Us Not Into Temptation by twighlitFF

Summary: Bad Bella Good Edward Forced Christianity Awesome One Shot. Winner of the “Twi-High Anonymous Challenge.” Rated for teenagers doing grownup stuff.

This one-shot is one of our faves. Snarky Bella loves the challenge that chaste Edward presents. It’s funny and hot, and we hope you’ll check it out.

Cosmo and Marvar are two of our favorite people and Love In My Box is one of our favorite fics :) It’s fun and sexy and it’s complete!

The Mirrors by AdorableCullens

Summary: Teddy’s secret and magical childhood is lost when a family heirloom is destroyed, changing his life forever. Now an adult, can Edward open himself back up to magic and love when he meets a beautiful – and hauntingly familiar – woman in real life?

This fic is AH with a bit (okay, a lot) of supernatural thrown in. It’s one of the most original and well-written stories we’ve ever read. Trust us, you don’t want to miss out on the genius that is AdorableCullens.

Mutually Assured Destruction by jandco

Official Description: I’ve plucked the line “You’re my brand of heroin” and applied it to an all human universe. No drug use.
Word Count: 49,299

So I found Mutually Assured Destruction the same way that many people did; I love all of Jandco’s work and was extremely excited to see that she had a new story she was posting. It was something that was going to be very different from her other work but I was still anxious to jump right in.

From the beginning we see that the characters in this story are not necessarily extraordinary. They are average and yet not. There is something that draws them to each other with such a force that they can’t be apart. Not that they don’t want to be, but that it is not a possibility. They are addicted. Anyone that has ever had an addiction or known someone with one, you know that need, that compulsion to have what you are addicted to. For MAD Bella and Edward this addiction is each other. Jandco has managed to translate something that everyone can relate to into something that everyone craves, the desire to have someone so much that it is all you can think about.

As the story progresses, we see Bella and Edward neglecting everything that is not the two of them. Their work suffers, their friends are forgotten, even simple things like taking care of their living space and themselves no longer matter. They have truly become the worst form of addicts and like any addict, they don’t care.

When Edward finally musters the courage to leave, he does so in the hopes that this will be better for them both. He thinks in doing this that they will return to their lives and that they can break this addiction. All it does is break them down. Again it is not that they don’t want to be apart, it is that they CAN’T.

While this story is a bit darker than we are used to seeing from Jandco, it is still the amazing writing and imagery that we have come to love from her. There is something so beautiful in the need these two have for each other. Underneath the addiction theme there is still a basic love story. A story about two people so in love with each other that they cannot and most simply won’t be apart and they don’t care what their friends, family, or society thinks about it. The only thing that matters to them is each other and we can all only hope to find that kind of need and desire of another person.

The title describes itself perfectly. What I love about this story is how Jandco has taken one of the most overused and cliched lines in the Saga and turned it into a story that defies every cliche known. This is the tale of when someone craves the other like literal heroin.

I had this story on my “to read” list for the longest time and when I was told this was on the list, I threw in the towel. I’m not normally one for super angst but this has become of my absolute favorite stories and I can see why it has been deemed one of the classics.

The struggle between Bella trying to maintain her life before Edward, during her relationship and after all tell-tale signs of what an addict goes through at the start of an addiction and the withdrawals. But on some level, isn’t being in a powerful relationship like being on drugs? It’s easy to see the correlations. When we first get into a relationship, don’t we blow off our friends for the new person? Then we try to mix the two together and the person we’re seeing wins out? If your partner ends the relationship, don’t you go through a period of sadness and depression, a withdrawal if you will?

I never thought of relationships this way until reading this story. It’s heartbreaking and beautiful at the same time. I wish I could select passages to illustrate my points but it would be fruitless. I would just have to highlight the entire story. I couldn’t imagine reading this once a week, and I’m so thankful it’s complete because I’ve read this at least three times in the past week and each time I notice something new. She’s got me addicted to this story, but I refuse to say it’s like a drug. Well fuck. I guess I just did.

The Teenage Angst Brigade by jandco

Official Description: A deal was made, a pact to keep five friends from the pitfalls of high school disparity. If only Edward hadn’t wanted Bella, it might have lasted…ALL HUMAN. OOC.
Word Count: 54,839

About a year ago I accidentally started reading fanfiction due to a desperate need to fill a void. I was a fish out of water and didn’t know what to look for or what I was doing really. I had read countless “copy and paste” versions of Twilight where the author actually did “insert self.” Somehow I kept hitting a brick wall; nothing was interesting enough to help me understand all the hype about fanfiction. The whole thing was a huge disappointment, and I was going to give up until I heard about this little thing called angst.

Having discovered that was going about this all wrong, I decided to search stories with angst in them on Fanfiction.net. One story caught my eye because of the title alone: THE TEENAGE ANGST BRIGADE by Jandco. I remember thinking “this has got to be just what I was looking for.” I had no idea, then, how true those words would be.

THE TEENAGE ANGST BRIGADE (TTAB) is honestly the reason that I continue to read fanfiction to this day. It is the reason that I haven’t quit, because it taught me that there are fanfictions out there worth wading through the muck for, that coal really can produce a diamond. And TTAB is a diamond, a classic . . . a must in any reading list. It’s brilliance to this day is unmatched, and I’ve never been so enthralled by a story before that I actually forgot to breathe.

TTAB is an alternate-universe/human, M rated story about new girl Bella Swan who, at Forks High School, meets a group of five very close friends. A group of friends that come with a stigma . . . that come with a secret. She’s fascinated by them, the rumors, the secrecy, their behaviors, their interactions with each other . . . everything. And she’ll quickly learn that every rumor actually does stem from some kernel of truth and it’s a truth that she’s going to have to decide if she is willing to accept or not. But more importantly, she won’t be the only one to learn that there is a heavy price to pay when your back is against the wall and it is the truth that has got its hand shoved down your shirt.

TTAB is amazingly well-written with vivid imagery that puts you right in the action. It’s this very reason that I absolutely adore this story: because TTAB takes the best and the worst aspects of life and weaves them with strings that don’t just pull at the heart, but claw.

One scene in particular moved me so much that I was left gaping, my heart pounding, and my fingers twitching erratically to click to the next page. No other fanfiction has been able to take me by surprise like TTAB and no other has yanked the breath right out of my lungs because of the sheer power of the raw emotion in it. It’s something that I still can’t get over; just how much my chest clenched when I learned that one single drop of blood won’t stain only fabric and . . . well I’m not going to ruin it for you! You’ll know when you get there, just remember to breathe.

I’ll leave you with this: if you don’t believe a word I’ve said or still aren’t completely sold on the idea of this amazing, captivating, and truly touching fanfiction then maybe some words of advice from Edward Cullen will make it better. . . best.

“But that’s the thing about youth: it’s messy and fucked up, and whiskey and crass, sex and regret and fear and music and dangerous and red converse and love and hurt and beautiful and confusing . . . and just like the five of us, all anyone is trying to do is find a way out . . . and fuck you if you think yours was any different.”

Because when they say that art reflects life, nothing is truer. And THE TEENAGE ANGST BRIGADE is a classic work of art . . . but more than that, it’s a work of life.
