What We're Reading

Songster: So here I am in my pj’s in all my post Christmas glory and something pops into my inbox and knocks me right off my comfy sofa. Holy Long Time Coming Bat Man! OCDindeed just updated The Fallout. I love this story so freaking much. It’s one of two AU vamp fics that I would wait until the end of time for the completion. Beautifully written, strong characterizations. *sighs* What a fab Christmas present.

LJSummers: I was so pleased to see this had updated! Yes, a fabulous present indeed! :) The first part is just so ANGSTY and then…Wow! *swoon* Brilliant characterizations. I also treated myself with a re-read of one of my favorite human Edwards – Coincidental Major by m7707. Sweetest guy out there. I just adore the puck out of this hockey player.

Songster: Oh yes, it is angsty and we all know angst and me don’t get along so well, but then… yeah so worth the wait. Speaking of waiting for it, Firefly in Summer updated and it made me so happy. (I need to find a super happy gif here LOL).

Katinki: yes! i love that The Fallout is updating again! And lo and behold, Last Rites, too! :D It’s like Christmas… oh wait… ;)

LJSummers: For reals! My notifications are pinging away like mad! :)

Songster: I know, I had a second episode of falling off the sofa when I saw Last Rites show up. I have had mucho fun re-reading and catching up with Love in Idleness by plummy. So good. If I got to play in The Wood, I’m not sure I would come out.

Kassiah: I’m so thankful for all of these great fics. Know what else I’m thankful for? The beautiful and insanely hot mjinaspen (who incidentally writes one of my favorite stories evar) is joining us! She’s going to be doing a monthly column on fics from other fandoms. So, say ‘hi’ to MJ!

Also, I’ve been reading like it’s my job. Wait…it is my job. haha I have lots of fics and books to talk about, but I need to organize my thoughts a bit. I will say that I rediscovered Vines by FictionFreak95, and ohmygosh. I loved it so much! This is absolutely one of my favorite Edwards, and we’re rec’ing it this week!

Katinki: on a non fic note, i just started the Guardian Trilogy by Laury Falter. it’s quick to read and surprisingly good. it’s YA. it features angels, conversing with the dead, some decent UST, a rather attractive and mysterious young man with some awesome powers, and a pretty intriguing female lead. i’m rather enjoying it….. eta… okay, because clearly, I have no self control, i finished book one, lol. was quite happy with the outcome and can’t wait to start book 2. here’s my review on goodreads.

LJSummers: Read a Hunger Games o/s by the very talented giselle-lx, called A Gift for Self-Destruction. Written for a fic prompt meme at A Different Forest, it’s a very IC look inside Katniss’ head. I highly recommend it. Giselle has a gift for catching the flavor of a protagonist.

Caren:YAY! jayhawkbb updated No Holds Barred! I read this a few months ago on Kass’s rec and loved it, and this chapter was just as good. Ballerina and Barman are awesome. :)

Songster: I spent my day reading Holding Sam by MeeraNaamJoker. It’s a Sam/Bella pairing that is beautifully written and sizzling with heat and emotion. Even E/B shippers would like it. I swear :)

Totally agree with you, LJ. Giselle is one of my favorite writers, must go read this.

Caren:I don’t know about that, songster. :P

My girl belladonna1472 just posted her new story Off The Record, and let me tell you… it’s fantastic. I love this idea so much!!!

Katinki: @songster my inner exb is cringing so hard right now. lol i’m glad you do the non-canon and i get to play with the vamps. :D

Songster: LOL. I am really ExB. Kassiah talked me into this or arm-twisted me or hypnotized me or something. Did anyone catch the update for Breaking News by WriteOnTime? I just love these two characters and it’s complete.

Kassiah: I am pretty mesmerizing. haha

LJSummers: ForksPixie updated Visions of Our Destiny (Jasper/Bella) after a bit of a hiatus. I am going to be re-reading the whole thing to refresh my happy memory. In this story, Jasper’s been waiting for his mate – seen in a vision by Alice – for 60 years. His involvement with her even before he meets her is just adorable. MsK’s The Trip Home 2 (How about And Baby Makes Four? Can we call it that or is that too spoilery?) updated and it’s so SWEET. :)

Kassiah: I just finished reading Shatter Me, and I liked it, even though I might be team Warner *ahem*. I also read Carano’s A Drink with the Girls and A Beer with the Guys, and aside from the fact that it’s two stories in one, I like it. Them. Whatever. It’s totally totally hot!

Also, Dirt Roads ended. Which…I haven’t read the end. You know me and never wanting stuff to end! But I’m sure it’s awesome! haha

Katinki: i also wanted to recommend a one shot for any interested in a good tear jerker. it’s called Seraphim by Anna Faze. It’s truly beautiful, but… yeah, it’s a little heartbreaking.

MsKathy: omg, I am so late to the partay here. Sorry. I feel like I’ve read so much lately, but my brain is fried. I really loved My World At Your Feet, even though (tmi?) I am totally not a foot fetishist. Don’t let the fetish aspect scare you away, it is really a beautiful piece between two hot dudes.

I am also way way behind on (but loving!) String Theory and Winter Song.

Totally had a snotsobby moment over Forgive Me Father and the angst and truth of feeling trapped and unable to love whom your heart yearns for.

If you’re in need of some vampslash, check out The Man You Make Me. GUH.

Songster: Speaking of… I am really taking a walk on the wild side this week by reading These Violent Delights by Magnolia822. Harry Potter/Twilight crossover starring Draco/Edward including some hot slashytimes between the wizard and the vamp. How’s that for a mishmash? Very good though.

Thanks to everyone who gives us support, sends in their recs, and just generally makes our lives in the fandom more entertaining. We couldn’t do this without all of you.
See you next week!!

Good Deal by m7707

Official Description:

Bella Swan hates Rosalie Hale. Her idea of revenge? Sleeping with the Ice Queen’s boyfriend, Edward Cullen. AH, very OOC, very rated M.

Word Count: 18,279

Confession time: I haven’t been reading anything new lately, but when this came across my rec pile, I decided to give it a whirl since it was already eight chapters strong.

Confession number two: So, I started to read…and couldn’t put it down. I was practically begging for that last chapter.

Let’s just say right off the bat I LOVE a snarky Bella. There’s just something about snappy, dry humor that makes me grin, and I get all excited when I find a new story with this sort of characterization. m7707 tells us in the beginning that it’s ‘quick and dirty’. Does she mean it? Oh yeah.

”The last thing in the fucking world I wanted to do with Cullen was talk to him. I had better uses for his mouth.”

At first Bella, with her unbridled hatred toward Rosalie, wants revenge. I won’t give away the why, but I understand her need for it. And what better way than getting at the Ice Queen than through her boyfriend…Edward.

“Who are you?” he asked.

My grin widened. “Bella Swan. I hate your fucking girlfriend.”

He blinked a couple of times and then nodded, closing those sharp, intelligent eyes.

“Good deal.”

At this point, Bella just takes control and I love it. Whenever she’s pissed at Rosalie, she’ll seek out Cullen for a grudge fuck. And she gets pissed off—a lot. He, on the other hand, seems not to have a problem with it.

“I’m sure your bitch of a girlfriend will do something to piss me off soon,” I said, walking backward so I could enjoy his dishevelment for a few more steps before giving him a wink and jaunty wave. “See you then, Cullen.”

Confession number three: I love when things start to shift in a story. That moment where one or the other realizes, hey, this isn’t what I thought it would be…it’s more. You see, there’s something she didn’t expect, and it’s at this point that the story had me caught in a visceral grip. Even frenemies with benefits gets lopsided at some point.

It hadn’t started out that way, but at some point things had changed.

Who falls for who? I don’t want to give anything away because it’s worth every word. Thoroughly engaging, completely addicting and had me grinning ear-to-ear at the end.

Last confession: You had me at “Good Deal”, m7707.

There aren’t many stories out there anymore that I drop whatever I’m doing and run to read as soon as I get an update. Good Deal was absolutely one of those stories. I craved more. With this being from the girl who brought us fuckhot hockey-playing swoonward, I should have expected it to be brilliant. And it is.

Like LuckyIrishTart told you, Edward and Bella’s, ahem, relationship begins when Bella wants to get back at her nemesis, Rosalie. I love Edward’s reaction the first time he talks to Bella:

“You’re Edward, right? Edward Cullen?”

He nodded.

“You’re dating Rosalie Hale?”

He grimaced. “Fucking Rosalie.”

Ohh, trouble in paradise. I smiled.

He looked me over. “We’re kind of on and off. This happens to be an off week.”

“Excellent.” I grabbed his hand and pulled him behind me as I headed toward the parking lot. “Come with me.”

“Where?” He followed along willingly enough.

I paused when we reached the edge of the lot, biting my lip. My truck was at one end, but the cab was small and the steering wheel huge. It didn’t leave a lot of room.

“Which one’s your car?”

He pointed at a shiny, brand new, sleek, and expensive looking sedan. “The Volvo. Why?”

“Perfect,” I said in satisfaction. I bet it had a nice back seat. Probably leather, too, which made it easy to clean. He looked like he’d be messy.

“Um…” He let me yank his arm as I marched purposefully toward the car. “Mind if I ask what we’re doing?”

“Getting into the backseat of your car.” I looked around. There were a few vehicles still left in the lot, but they were mostly staff cars parked in the back. His sat all by itself in shiny silver solitude.

“Why?”

I came to a sudden halt, spinning to look at him. He managed to avoid knocking me flat on my ass in an admittedly graceful move that left him towering over me. I hadn’t realized how tall he was.

“Do you want a blowjob or not?”

You guise know I love highschool fics, and this one makes me especially happy. Even though it’s a quick read, m7707 packs a punch in this story. It’s super hot, but there’s genuine emotion and growth with both of them.

“I want you to smile,” he said quietly.

I swallowed and managed a shaky one for him. According to the rules of our little game, it was my turn to ask, but I was too scared to say what I really wanted. It wasn’t a game to me any longer.

“I want you to kiss me,” I whispered, and he did.

This is definitely a favorite, Fictionees. Read it–you don’t want to miss out on this one.

Major Misconduct by m7707

Official Description: Edward Cullen – hot high school hockey player. Bella Swan – shy high school student. They’ve admired each other from afar, so what happens when they finally meet? Will they be strong enough to handle a threat from his past? No good deed goes unpunished…

Recently, there have been a few “Hockeywards” gracing our monitors. That’s one thing I love about this fandom—we get a few stories that hit around the same time with a similar thread, but such different takes on the subject that they are still viable.

Major Misconduct would be the High School side of Edward in skates, and it’s adorable.

When Alice tells her BFF Bella that she has been dating a new fella, Bella is shocked to learn the guy is Jasper—the buddy of the guy (Edward, of course) that she has been crushing on since she was a freshman, but who has ran in separate circles from her until the first day of Bella’s junior year in high school. They have a class together, and end up talking. With Alice and Jasper a couple, they have more time to get to know each other and for the crush to grow a little stronger. Edward is sweet, popular and a star of the school’s hockey team. What’s a girl to do when her crush plays a sport she knows nothing about? Hit the internet for books, movies and all things hockey, of course.

As the relationship between the two builds, so does the UST. In wonderful ways. Want to know more? I’m not telling; you have to read to find out. Dew eet, you know you wanna. :)

M7707’s writing is crisp, clean and uncluttered. It gets to the point, keeping the story rolling with chapters that read easily and keep you engrossed with funny lines, great dialogue and relatable characters. The story is told through BPOV, which is nice. You get to wonder along with her about Edward’s motivations and actions, building the story in a fun way. There is comedy—Bella’s thought processes are hilarious, and the conversations between the girls are a riot. There is also a sweet romance that feels natural and well-paced.

High school stories are, for me, hit and miss. Sometimes the kids seem too old and don’t always ring true. When I was in high school, my worries were far simpler: were my clothes in style, was my hair cool, what was everyone doing on Friday night, and did the boy of my dreams like me? One of the things I most like about m7707’s story is that her Bella worries about these things in a believable way. We’ve all made fools of ourselves talking to a cute boy, and Bella is no exception to this rule.

“What’s that?” I whispered, nodding toward the marks, unable to contain my curiosity. He glanced up at me sharply, and I blushed – yet again – in embarrassment. “I’m sorry, that’s really rude. I wasn’t snooping, I was just…”

“Relax, Bella,” he murmured back. “They’re not gang signs or anything.”

I was drowning in embarrassment. “Really, sorry…”

Those green eyes seemed to search my face. “You do that too much.”

Was I drowning before? Now I was positively wallowing. “I know,” I admitted miserably. “It’s the bane of my existence. I’ve always been an easy blusher.”

His mouth curved up on one side. I made a frantic note to never be funny in front of him, ever, as my focus zeroed in on that mouth and heat curled through my insides. Everything else faded.

“No,” he said, “not your blushing, although that’s pretty cute. You apologize too much.”

“Sorry.” It came out automatically. Wait…what? Did he just say I was cute? Am I thrilled or offended?

I cringe for her!

If you are looking for an awesome read, something to keep you entertained as the summer months roll in and the days are lazy and warm, you should read this story. I’m in love with it already, and I want you to be, too. Go read and leave her some love; you won’t be sorry!

I think it’s pretty safe to guess that everyone knows that I love highschool fics. They are my absolute favorite. There’s just something about being able to realistically believe you’re invincible.

Major Misconduct is a great story that has an amazing Edward and Bella *gasp!* in high school. One of the things that I really love about this fic is that it’s just so real> These kids have typical issues like whether or not someone likes them and if they’ll be embarrassed by their older brother showing their parents their condom stash, rather than helping their BFF go to rehab undetected or if their mom is going to fuck their intended. It’s refreshing, honestly.

My eyes immediately went to Edward, his tall form and bright, unruly hair unmistakable. He wasn’t completely dressed in his full uniform – he didn’t have his skates or all of his pads on yet. He walked out onto the ice and gave me a smirk before turning his attention to the stick he held in his hands and the puck he dropped on the ice. I watched, mesmerized, as he started playing keep-away with one of his teammates that had come out with him and was clad in a similar manner. He barely moved his body, the blade of his stick flashing in a blur as he flicked the puck around – underneath him, the other player, between their legs, around their feet. The stick and his hands were constantly in motion. They were both laughing as the speed of the blade and the puck increased, and finally the other guy pushed him and walked away, shaking his head. His teammate had never even come close to the puck.

He looked up at me again and winked, walking out a little further onto the ice before turning and facing the boards in the corner, where the plexiglass reached far above our heads. He swung and hit the puck, playing kind of a one person rebound, like hitting a tennis ball against the wall. The puck hit the boards and flew into the air, sliding up along the plexiglass and shooting up into the air, only to arc up over the ice to fall at his feet. I couldn’t see it at all; I had no idea how he could follow it. I saw him looking at me out of the corner of his eye, and he started catching the puck on the blade of his stick as it sailed through the air back toward him, flipping it and then catching it again on the other side. Oh yeah, he was showing off, all right. He grinned, cocking his brow arrogantly at me before half-jogging, half-sliding across the ice, hopping over the wall and heading back into the locker room.

This fic is very sweet and fun, and with hockeyward, you know you can’t go wrong. Check it out ;)
