MyLittleSecret84 says: While we Drifted We Were One is not an Edward-Bella story. That’s probably the first thing you would want to know. The second thing you would want to know is that it’s written by Ooohlalaaa, who in my opinion can do no wrong. So when I found out that she’s writing a Rosalie-Edward story I was a little skeptical at first, and decided to lurk around to see if I could get into it. The lurking soon ended when I realized just how well-written and captivating this story is. In While We Drifted Rosalie and Edward are lifelong friends who have been hooking up for about eight months when the story begins. In Rosalie’s own words:
“I staggered into the bathroom to take care of my typical morning-after-drinking-so-much-I-did-Edward routine.”
The first thing that struck me was the familiarity between the two characters. Written in their respective POVs, we get the following observations:
“Before he said anything, I heard Edward’s nails scratch against his scalp, a sound I’d know even if I went blind.”
“ I hummed at the sensation of her fingertips pressing against my scalp, a feeling that she knew had been soothing to me since I was a little boy.”
Despite all the hooking up and their friendship, these two don’t exactly get along. Rosalie refers to Edward as a poser and Edward calls Rosalie an “unmotivated, materialistic, impassionate stranger.” Their relationship is dynamic, to say the least. They clearly adore each other, and Edward admits to friends that he’s in love with her and has been obsessed with her for years, but Rosalie’s actions make it impossible for them to become more than friends and fuck buddies. Enter Bella – who Edward agrees to go on a date with to a) get his mother off his back, and more importantly 2) get a rise out of Rosalie – and things get angstier and more difficult for everyone involved.
Bella almost seems like a ghost in this story, especially when she is first introduced. I read mostly B+E – I don’t like other girls touching Edward, talking to Edward, being around Edward – so I wonder sometimes if I will be upset with the author when and if Bella ends up hurt. The truth is, however, that any sympathy I have for her is the sort of sympathy you’d have for a secondary character. As narcissistic and bitchy as Rosalie may be, it is her pain that matters here, as well as Edward’s. And the author does a magnificent job of getting us to identify with Rose, understand her, and care deeply for her. I feel almost desperate when I read it, feeling angstier than I did when I stayed up all night reading Wide Awake. This doesn’t mean that Oohlalaaa’s wonderful sense of humor and wit aren’t present, however, so don’t worry about it being too angsty.
For those of you who doubt they can get into this, try to put all judgments aside. I know this is not for everyone, and I respect the choices people make with respect to what they read, but believe me when I tell you that this one is worth it. Oohlalaaa’s writing gets more poetic with everything she writes, without ever losing the wit and humor that we are all familiar with and love. The author does with every chapter what few people manage to do at the height of their stories – transport me to this world she has created, make me feel a dozen emotions at once, and sympathize with pairings and characters I never thought I could care about.
One final note: the Edward here is yummy, he does very sweet things, and he wears vintage-y clothes and is a musician. The chemistry between them is ridiculous, and when Rose and Edward are alone together, things get really, really hot. Read it for that, if nothing else.
This will not disappoint.
RedVelvetHeaven says: MyLittleSecret84′s rec is so complete and amazing, I feel there is little I can add to sway you to read this story. I can only simply say….have you ever read a story where you know you are reading something coming straight from the writers heart? A story that regardless of the content…the plot…the characters…the writing alone can hold you; keep you coming back for more? This is one of those stories. Having the opportunity to beta for OHL for this story is probably one of the greatest experiences I have had being a part of this fandom. From the very first chapter I was in love with this story.
OHL shows us the vulnerable side of Rose. She shows us the bitch we all know…then pulls off the mask. With intense rawness, she delivers, by far, the best Rose I have ever read. Edward is equally amazing. He is as deep and beautiful as he is messed up, confused, and frustrated, and you will get so mad at him for all the wrong choices he makes…but if you are honest with yourself, you really do understand why.
I could never fault anyone for not being able to read out of their comfort zone…but if you’re ready to take a chance…the amazing and hauntingly beautiful writing in While We Drifted will make it all worth while.
Kassiah says: Everyone who knows me knows that I love OHL like nobody’s business. That girl could ask me to walk through fire for her and I would. That girl could put out a story that Edward is in love with Rosalie and I would …read it. On the other hand, everyone who knows me also knows that I am a Bella/Edward girl deep in my soul. Pair anyone else you want to up–fine with me, but I cannot deviate from an E/B coupling. Would the OHL-loving side or the E/B side win out with me as I drift along in this journey?
First, I would like to say that this story is, in my opinion, OHL’s best writing. I have read everything she has written, except her earliest work, and you know Resistward holds a special place in my heart. This story is so beautifully poetic and emotional and so deep, I just want to erect a monument in OHL’s honor.
I do agree with MyLittleSecret84′s assessment that Bella is inconsequential to this story; she could be anyone and it wouldn’t matter. This is a story about Rosalie and Edward. Sadly, my E/B half wins out and I find myself crying and begging him to let Rosalie go and put all of his efforts into Bella. There are sweet moments between Rosalie/Edward that anyone other than me would be a fool not to appreciate, from him tying special strings around her wrists to singing her a special song in the park. It’s romantic, but it’s angst to the nth degree for me, and I can’t handle it. It is also fucking hot, I mean *fans self*, but for me, it’s the wrong couple and even the hot smexin’ makes me emo.
If you are a reader who can look past the need for an E/B pairing, read this story. It is beautifully written and such a wonderful fic, you will seriously be missing out if you don’t. Even if you don’t think you can handle it, give it a try anyway. I will be here to hold your hand afterwards, I promise.
