#Trending Topic: Pregella and Daddy-to-Be-Ward

Ahh, Pregella & Daddy-To-Be-Ward, my two favourite characters. In case people weren’t already aware, I am passionate about pregnancy and childbirth, and have been ever since I can remember. Everything about it fascinated me, and it still does. So much so that when I went to college and decided to become a nurse, I geared my coursework, projects, everything towards specialising in obstetrics and after school, I worked as a labor & delivery nurse for a couple of years. In some ways, that satisfied my passion, but when I stopped working to stay home, I found that I needed something more. These days I do that through reading (and sometimes writing), but because of my background I find that I am extremely picky about the quality of these stories. I want to read something realistic and believable, I want to feel it, and experience it… and I want that happily ever after when it’s all over with.

To me, there is no greater vision of both femininity and strength than a pregnant woman, there is no greater vision of strength and caring than an expectant father, and there is no greater miracle than a baby.

The biggest problem in finding this type of story though is that the fandom was completely turned off the idea of a Pregella by Stephenie Meyer herself when she released Breaking Dawn. Fans didn’t want anything that would even remotely remind them of that book, the demon spawn or the lack of Daddyward. I cannot tell you how many times I read author’s notes that said something to the effect of, “I promise, Bella does not get pregnant from this encounter. There will be no babies in this story!” Authors wanted to reassure their readers that their story would not epically fail like a certain other story had.

After nearly two years, we are finally getting more stories… the hatred of the Pregella/Daddy-To-Be-Ward stories seems to be waning. We are starting to see more and more of them. Several authors have even gone back to the Breaking Dawn storyline and have tried to either edit, change, fix, or simply enhance the story that SMeyer shared with us. So, now the trick is to find stories that are well-written. I have to admit that nothing is a bigger turn-off for me in a story than a ridiculous, unbelievable pregnancy storyline.
For example:
-Women do not experience morning sickness the day after they have sex.
-A woman cannot fling herself onto her stomach onto a bed while in her 3rd trimester.

-Seriously, I know that dramatics can be fun but I’ve been a witness to over 300 births and only once have I heard a woman threaten to cut off her husband’s genitals if he were to ever touch her again.

I don’t want ridiculous. I want realistic. Notice that what I said I liked was the strength and femininity in a woman and the strength and caring in a man… I want stories that highlight that or stories where the pregnancy brings about that change in the characters.
So, what is the best way to find these little gems?
Word of mouth is the best way. In the past I’ve been known to ask for recs for preg!fic on Twitter and have been sent to a slew of them that way.
So, what are some good Pregella & Daddy-To-Be-Ward stories? Well, they tend to be broken down into a few sub-categories. We have the AUs, the Happy Couple Starting a Family, and the Unplanned Pregnancy. Granted, we could easily break those down even further or combine some of the categories together. After all, these stories aren’t all told with a formula. But for the sake of time and to just give some examples, I’ll keep it in these basic sub-categories.
The AUs
Really, the reason that I separated this off from the fixing of Breaking Dawn is because this category existed before we ever knew that there would be anything to fix. There were several, in fact, there was one that I vaguely recall was written as a joke because the authors were adamant that “It’s impossible for Bella to get pregnant! Quit writing about it! And just to prove to you how ridiculous the concept is….” Okay, they weren’t really rude about it, but I do find it funny that they were so certain of the impossibility of a half-vampire child that they wrote a story to joke about it. I don’t believe the fic was ever completed.
Anyhow, let me give you three different types of these AUs. One of them was the original. The stories that were written before Breaking Dawn was released. My favourite of those is Morning Star by Consultant by Day. In this story, Edward and Bella are married and before Bella can be changed, after returning from their honeymoon, they learn she is pregnant. The story is their entire journey through that change in their lives and includes a small fight with the Volturi. Well written and a story that I’ve read more than once.
Next, we have the AUs where the author wrote it in an attempt to “fix” Breaking Dawn. Some people loved the fourth book and others hated it. Regardless, most people can agree that there is at least something about the pregnancy and birth of Renesmee that they wished they could fix or change. After the book was released there were quite a few one-shots released that showed Edward interacting with Renesmee because it’s one of the things that we missed seeing in the book. There have been other stories written to “fix” the pregnancy in the story. A few people chose to fix that by eliminating it altogether. Personally, I think that they miss out on something by doing that.
However, the story that stands out the most as being one to “fix” Breaking Dawn is Beautiful Beat by americanxidiot. Granted, this story is more AU than canon, but there were some major things that the author felt needed to be touched upon in the story. I will say, however, that I was very sad when the story was originally completed, even though the story ended the way that it needed to. Later, americanxidiot added an extended epilogue and then I felt like happy with the conclusion.

The third type of AU is a story that has a vampire component to it, but only takes the concepts from canon, not the storyline. An example of this type of story is Master Race by babette12. In this story, Edward is a vampire who is currently living away from his family. He happens upon another vampire while down in Brazil and “overhears” his thoughts about his children and the idea of having a halfling child is born in Edward’s thoughts. So, he goes to see his family in Forks in hopes of finding the perfect (disposable) human to carry his child.

The Happy Couple

The best example of the ‘happy couple’ that I can think of right now is Some Little Girls by sleepyvalentina. Really, this story is a sequel to Art After 5 and takes place several years later when Edward and Bella decide they want to have a baby. There are only a couple of chapters posted to this story so far, but it’s so well written and it instantly yanks the reader into the story.

Another one is The Loves of My Life by Courtlyn. This is a bit of a stretch of the happy couple scenario, but it is where the story begins. In this one Jacob and Bella are very happily married when he is killed while working. Bella later learns that she’s pregnant and meets the new doctor in town. The story is very much about growth and healing and this Bella is the epitome of strength to be able to get through this ordeal and to move forward in her life after the death of her husband. Beautifully written.
The Unplanned Pregnancy
Really, these are my favourite. They have the clearest opportunity for growth and I love seeing how these characters deal with the challenges. Let’s face it, there are lots of unplanned pregnancy scenarios. The married couple, the unmarried couple, the one night stand, the teenagers, etc.
One story that I enjoyed was December Skies by Bella Regia. In this one, Bella is involved with Jacob, she gets pregnant and he dumps her. She continues on with her family as support and her best friend, Edward. The entire story is just sweet and I remember enjoying it back when it was a WIP.

Another one night stand story that I’ve liked is Into the Mystic by DKMulder. I loved the way she wrote Edward when she learned he was the father of Bella’s baby. It was wonderful and felt real. Unfortunately, the author recently put the story on hiatus.

Finally, I want to finish by naming one of my favourite stories right now: River Dam by jfly & jandco. This story is about two teenagers, one of them ready to go off to college and experience the world and the other with another year of high school… when an unplanned pregnancy forces them both to give up on their dreams. Both Bella and Edward are beautifully flawed. I love them, while I want to wring their necks for the stupid decisions that they make. It is well-written and painfully realistic… and right now all I can do is pray for a Happily Ever After for the new family.

Those are just a few of the stories that can be found in Twilight fandom. As I said before, it’s my absolute favourite genre of story because of the way they draw out the characters. To me, there is simply nothing sexier or more romantic than a father-to-be and to me, Daddy-To-Be-Ward is the ultimate hero.

Okay, I’ve shared some of my favourites, please share with me some of yours!

My favorite Pregella & Daddy-to-be-ward story is a tie withe Elle in with The Path We Chose and Shared Lips by ccmaja.

The Path We Chose is great b/c it is a realistic story & the 2 care so much for each other & fight hard to do what they think is right.
Then you get the continuation of the story in Not Without You which was just completed recently.

With Shared Lips, they aren’t really a couple yet. So you have the angst factor & drama of the situation. You spend a lot of time early in the story wanting to ring Edward’s neck, but he does come around & you get to see that protective, possessive Edward fully emerge.

My favorite Pregella and Daddy-to-be-ward story is Life’s Little Choices by My Bella. It is an amazing, extremely well written story that will take you on a roller coaster of emotion and will pull on your hearts strings at the height of the story and beyond. My Bella takes you on their journey of their unplanned pregnancy, and how they cope with all the changes it brings to their lives as they struggle to face all the changes their little bundle of joy brings to their lives and to grow and mature as individuals and as parents and lovers.

My fav is by my awesome bestie-fic-friend Eternally Addicted~The Game That Changed It All! I love it for several reasons-It has a really hawt Baseballward that I love so much, second Bella is a believable person, and lastly it has a really happy Bella and Edward when they find out they are preggers! As an official member of the unofficial Baby Brigade, I love myself some preggers Bella as well. (Agreed that it needs to be so totally different that the scary as hell BD fiasco!) TGTCIA has an unplanned pregnancy, that came at a difficult time in their relationship. It took some work for the two of them to get things on track, but they worked it out so well. They both learn to be flexible and work thru things together. Besides, Daddyward is so freaking adorable! So go and read it and enjoy!

There’s a novella just finishing up that is a Jasper/Edward/Bella where surrogate Bella has children for Jasper and Edward, and the trio falls in love in the process. ‘And Baby Makes Three’ by fiberkitty. It was written for the FGB auction. http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5852334

~nods~ I knew about that one and another where Alice/Bella are in a relationship and want a baby and Edward is their ‘donor’. I think that both are good and intriguing concepts, I’m just not a huge fan of slash and thus haven’t read either of them.

My second favorite would be Hand Me Down by Hope4more. Bella is all alone, homeless, penniless and pregnant. Dumped by her boyfriend who also cleans out her bank account. Pregnant and all alone she has no choice and nowhere else to go. So the only choice she has left is to stay at her best friend Alice’s apartment while Alice is away. Unknown to Bella someone else is looking to get away from his troubles at Alice’s apartment as well. What happens when they discover each other there. This story will make you cry and fall in love with it.

I have a few favorites. I Hunger For Your Touch by Jmolly. Her entire series is wonderful, but this story is so great. It shows Edward coming to terms with himself and realizing he is not a monster because he has been blessed with the love of Bella and the miracle of a child. It is a WIP and Bella is still pregnant but her body is experiencing it and adapting to it in a different way than in stories I’ve read before. Jmolly is an excellent author and her attention to detail is astounding.

I also love Bloodlines by Windchimes. The way she describes the birth is amazing. Her depiction of Edward’s and Bella’s relationship with each other and the pregnancy is heartwarming.

The AH dadward that I like is the one depicted in the Ex Factor by AngelatTwilight. This story is a long read and at first you may hate Edward and Bella. Oh hell, you may hate everyone, but Dadward in this story is something special.

    That’s just my 2 cents. :)

Windchime’s story is one of my favourites. The way that she takes the story from Edward discovering he’d fathered a child when he was human and then next going through Bella’s pregnancy… it just is beautifully done. I haven’t read either of the other two, but I’ll mark them down. Thank you.

I have another. That Girl by U2shay is a great alternate universe take on dadward. I encourage everyone to read it. I don’t know what it is but I love a great baby story. Maybe it’s because I’m over 30 with no kids and my ovaries are in overdrive but whatever, this story (along with the others i commented on before) were very satisfying to the mother to be (hopefully someday) in me.

My favorite Pregella and Daddy-to-be-ward story is Family of Perfection by DazzlinSparkle05. This is an AH fic. They already have one child in the beginning of this, but are not together. The situation they’re in seems real to me. Bella is pregnant later on and it’s difficult. I just love how all the characters interact and how Bella and Edward parent.

i haven’t read a good one in a long time… so i’m really glad you did this topic. there is a story i really enjoyed, even thogh it does have lengthy chapters, but the more the merrier. it’s like 4 or 5 stories wrapped in one. i’ve read it twice already. so if you haven’t i highly reccomend it. it has the sweetest pregella and daddy-to-be-ward and another daddy but to avoid any spoilers i will say no more, just that it has everything you need in a good story.. humor, angst, romance and the best lemons you could ask for.. lol.

My ultimate favorite is Coming to Terms. This was my first pregnant Bella story and since then I have been hooked. Currently, I am reading a lot of really good ones
River Dam – OMG, this story is amazing. By far the most realistic look at teen pregnancy. It’s so raw and honest
Songbird – this is a great one night stand story.
Under the Apple Tree – This story is addicting, but I have to warn you that Bella does not want to be pregnant… many readers may struggle to like her but she is starting to evolve.
Vegas Baby! – A weekend that leads up to a whole lot of drama!

      GinnyW says:

Gah. I started Under the Apple Tree on Friday and only slept for 2hrs before picking it up and devouring the rest of it on Saturday. I LOVE that story. So very good. I wished that I would’ve seen that one before. :)

I’ve been saving Songbird. I figure I’d give it one or two more updates and then I’ll start on it. She’s on my author alerts, so I’ve been watching the alerts come in.

River Dam is one of my favourites. Both Jenny & jandco write with such depth and emotion that it’s hard not to be drawn in by anything that they do. I just adore them both as people and as writers. It’s really one of my faves, too.

Vegas Baby! As you said, drama. I read, but… I’m into a fic more for emotional development, sometimes drama helps, other times it hinders. I’m still waiting to decide.

And… have you read The Path We Chose? I really do like that fic. I started rereading it this morning.. just so sweet. :)

HI, I tired to find River Dam to add it to my list of reads but can’t. Maybe you could point me in the right direction. Thanks

I just finished The Path We Chose and am starting the sequel. I’m really enjoying it. To be honest, I am hoping that a little bit of hardship happens in the sequel. Yes it’s sweet but both Edward & Bella are a little too willing to change themselves for eachother. Just my opinion, I may be a little more on the “glass is half empty” side. I love reading anything pregnant/baby involving Bella and Edward. I know what you mean about the drama… sometimes it really gets in the way of the story. I love conflict and angst but it has to be realistic. I think that’s why I love River Dam so much… that is one deeply emotional, drama ridden story but it’s honest. it’s just so hard to read the stories that involve, them having sex, bella gets pregnant, bella tells edward, edward says i love you, even though they just met. GinnyW, I think I was just spoiled with your story… the bar is very high.

I haven’t read a whole lot of Daddyward stories, but one I have read that I absolutely LOVE is “This Is Not My Life” by isakasses. It is sooo good, but I will warn you that this is not a “Bella and Edward love each other and then have a baby” story. Here’s the summary that’s given: “Follow Bella as she tries to survive a madman’s abduction and keep a stranger’s child from succumbing to his wild fantasies, and follow Edward as he tries to stay sane searching for his daughter taken right before his eyes.”

At first I worried that Edward’s daughter and Bella were going to be kidnapped most of the story but thankfully they’re not. The story has a little over 14,000 reviews, so it’s definitely popular- and as soon as you start reading you’ll see why. There might not be any Pregella but this Daddyward is wonderful anyway. I definitely recommend this story! Here’s the link:
